Real cause of diabetes discovered, and L-carnosine could be the remedy!

Real cause of diabetes discovered, and L-carnosine could be the remedy image
Type 2 diabetes is often described as a disease of insulin resistance and raised blood-sugar levels—but new research suggests the real cause could be more to do with our molecules. If true, the nutritional supplement L-carnosine could be all it takes to reverse the problem.
Underlying the usual symptoms are raised levels of MG (methylglyoxal), a glucose metabolite that is a by-product of cell activity, say researchers from Heidelberg University Hospital in Germany.
They began to suspect there was something more going on when they noted that diabetics continued to display all their usual symptoms, including diabetic damage to their nerves and kidneys, even when their blood-sugar levels had fallen to within a healthy range.
Diabetics typically have raised levels of MG, and this could be causing the damage rather than the usual suspects of raised glucose and insulin resistance, the researchers say.
The theory has been demonstrated in tests on laboratory rats. When they were given MG with their food, the rats started to develop typical signs of diabetes, including insulin resistance.
The Heidelberg researchers discovered something similar when they carried out tests on fruit flies. When the researchers turned off the enzyme that breaks down MG, the flies quickly started to become insulin-resistant.
While MG levels may indeed be the real root cause of diabetes, the researchers don't yet know why levels rise in the first place.
But if they're right, the supplement L-carnosine could be the solution, says Mark Turner, a professor at Nottingham Trent University. It blocks the formation of molecules that are formed from glucose and fatty acids—which suggests that MG would fall into that category. Early trials support the idea; in one, L-carnosine reduced blood-sugar levels, and prevented complications that are typically associated with diabetes.

What’s Cooking: Magical Moringa Energy Bites!

Our lives are busy. Despite our non-stop schedule in 2018, one commitment we are trying to stick with this year is eating more greens. But how?
Sure, you can blend them, dress them up or even sneak some well-disguised kale into your meals. There's nothing wrong with that. But, what if it was even easier?
Enter moringa (or scientific name Moringa oleifera). This super-green plant is native to India, Pakistan and parts of Asia and the Himalayans. The leaves of the moringa plant are most commonly dried and crushed into a powder, similar to the protein you might mix into a smoothie.
The difference between protein powder and moringa, however, is that you just need 1 tablespoon of the latter to receive maximum benefits – it’s the equivalent to a whole serving of leafy greens – only with even more nutrients.
It's also been touted as the next trending superfood (on the heels of turmeric) because of its powerful anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, as well as being a great source of protein.
The plant in its totality – including seeds, root and bark – is recognized traditionally in Eastern cultures and through Ayurveda for medicinal qualities, including stabilizing blood pressure and aiding in digestion and elimination. Some studies have even linked this superfood to brain health, with preliminary studies showing improvement in those with Alzheimer's disease.
Because of its mild, slightly earthy (yet not-too-overpowering) flavour, moringa can be added to just about anything – sprinkle it in a cup of tea, mix it into your milk alternative for a creamy latte, or blend it into a smoothie bowl.
We chose to combine it with a quick, tried-and-tested energy bite recipe, that's designed to provide a quick pick-me-up. Take these on the trail, stash them when running out the door to work, or just keep them on hand in the freezer for when you want something delicious, healthy and – suffice it to say – magical.
Ingredients:
6-10 medium medjool dates
4 tbsp peanut butter
1/4 cup rolled oats
2 tbsp shredded coconut
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 1/2 tbsp moringa
Directions:
Remove pits from Medjool dates.
Add dates to food processor and chop until dates become a smooth paste.
Empty dates into mixing bowl.
In the same bowl add Peanut butter, rolled oats, shredded coconut, chia seeds and moringa.
Mix until all ingredients combine into a dough.
Scoop tablespoon size amounts and roll into balls.
Garnish with shredded coconut. Option: roll in honey and then coconut.
Put in refrigerator or freezer for about one and a half to two hours.
Enjoy!

Routine antibiotics for UTIs are killers!

Routine antibiotics for UTIs are killers image
A class of antibiotics routinely prescribed to treat respiratory and urinary tract infections (UTIs) can be a killer, causing life-threatening damage to the body's main artery, the aorta, researchers have confirmed.
It's already known that fluoroquinolones, which include Levaquin, Cipro and Floxin, can cause serious nerve damage, but now researchers have confirmed that they also trigger aortic aneurysms, bulges in the aorta that can rupture, leading to life-threatening internal bleeding.
The one piece of good news, according to researchers from the Karolinksa Institute, is that the risk isn't quite as bad as earlier research had suggested. It had been feared the antibiotics doubled the risk of an aortic aneurysm, but this has now been reduced to a 66 percent risk, which would still represent 82 new cases per million treatment courses.
Aortic aneurysm in the abdomen is the third major cause of death in the over-65s.
In 2016, the US drug regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), issued an alert about the drugs. Because of their potential to harm, and even cause death, the drugs should be seen by doctors more as a last-resort therapy than as a routine treatment, the FDA advised. The drug's risks, which included disabling side effects to the tendons, muscles, joints, nerves and central nervous system, outweighed any benefits unless the patient's life was at risk from the bacterial infection.

How Coca-Cola 'bought science' to safeguard its profits!

How Coca-Cola 'bought science' to safeguard its profits image
Health campaigners have uncovered the full extent of Coca-Cola's dirty tricks campaign to deflect concerns about its products contributing to the obesity epidemic.
It created and entirely funded an 'independent and scientific' group, the Global Energy Balance Network (GEBN), which targeted key people with its message that obesity was the result of a lack of exercise or 'energy balance'.
It funded scientists and academics to head up the organisation, including Simon Singh's Sense About Science, which was handed $25,000. In return, they would endeavour to change the public debate about obesity and deflect attention away from its sugary drinks.
The US organisation, Right To Know, has discovered that Coca-Cola targeted policy-makers, healthcare professionals, health journalists and bloggers in a cynical attempt to protect profits. It also created a website and social media platforms to spread the message and looked to establish partnerships with global groups that might be sympathetic to the 'energy balance' idea, such as the American Society for Nutrition.
GEBN was portrayed as 'a credible honest broker' although in private communications Coca-Cola described it as "a weapon" to change the conversation and adopt tactics that would change policy and improve profits. The scientists who were recruited played their part, and one went on record to state there was "no compelling evidence" that fast food and sugary drinks contributed to obesity when the very reverse was true.
GEBN was closed down in 2015, and the University of Colorado School of Medicine handed back a $1m grant from Coca-Cola to help set up the organisation. It is not known whether Sense About Science returned its pay-out.
Shortly before GEBN was disbanded, the Harvard school of public health had accused it and its supporters of spreading "scientific nonsense".
Right To Know likened the creation of GEBN to the tobacco industry's Merchants of Doubt campaign, which questioned the idea that second-hand smoke could contribute to disease.
