Music as effective as powerful sedatives before an op!

Music as effective as powerful sedatives before an op image
Patients are usually given a sedative such as a peripheral nerve block before an operation—but listening to music could be just as effective.
It had the same anxiety-reducing effects as standard sedative medication—and the drug also can cause side effects like breathing problems, hostility and agitation, say researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
The researchers gave 157 patients the choice of having 1 to 2 mg of the sedative midazolam or listening on headphones to a piece of ambient music, Weightless by Marconi Union, which was specially prepared by sound therapists to reduce stress and anxiety.
The researchers evaluated the stress levels of the patients before and after the two options and discovered similar levels of anxiety in both groups.
Music is being offered as a pre-op procedure in the school's surgical center, often before outpatient surgery, said Veena Graff, one of the researchers. "Our research shows there are drug-free alternatives to help calm a patient," she said. The study was the first to test the effectiveness of music against an intravenous sedative.

Almost half of the UK wouldn’t save a life in an emergency situation!

  • Almost half (43%) of the UK wouldn’t help someone about to jump off a bridge and take their own life
  • More than two thirds (71%) of over 55’s are not first aid trained
  • 46 per cent of males wouldn’t stop to help someone about to take their own life
  • Over four fifths of the UK (84%) are not interested in first aid training
Research has revealed that almost half of males in the UK (46%) wouldn’t stop to help someone they saw about to jump off a bridge and take their own life, despite being the most likely to take their own life themselves.
The study conducted by Virtual College investigated how likely we are to help during emergency situations, and how well trained the UK is when it comes to first aid. It was revealed that only 36 per cent of the UK was first aid trained. The statistics also highlighted that 66 per cent wouldn’t feel confident in their ability to save someone’s life if they are called upon.
A shocking 65 per cent of males and 63 per cent of females are not first aid trained, and over two thirds (71%) of the over 55’s have never received first aid training.
Over four fifths of the UK (84%) are not interested in becoming first aid trained and would not look to become a first aider in the future. This is followed by over 9 in 10 (93%) of the over 55’s, and 88 per cent of 45-54 year olds stating they are also not interested in first aid training.
The UK should take first aid training seriously as two thirds (66%) of the population, and 69 per cent of over 55’s revealed they wouldn’t feel confident carrying out simple first aid such as the safety position.
Data shows that just over half (56%) of 16-24 year olds didn’t provide someone with first aid, making them the least likely to help during a medical emergency.
The main reason that prevented people from assisting during medical emergencies was that they ‘didn’t know what to do’ with 40 per cent of 35-44 year olds citing this as their deterrent, suggesting they are the most in need of immediate training.
Over nine tenths (92%) of the UK stated they didn’t regret not helping during a medical emergency, almost all (97%) of 25-34 year olds showed no remorse for not helping and are unlikely to help if in the same situation.
The data revealed that over half (56%) of the UK did not receive first aid during their own medical emergency.
Males are the least likely to be helped with 64 per cent not receiving first aid, compared to 58 per cent of females not receiving help from others during their medical emergency.
Almost half of the UK (43%) stated they would not stop to help save someone’s life if they saw them stood on a bridge about to jump off.
Males were the least likely to help someone about to jump off a bridge with 46 per cent, and 47 per cent of the over 55’s stating they would stop and try to help in that situation.
Least first-aid trained cities table by per cent:
  1. Bristol (77%)
  2. Nottingham (70%)
  3. Southampton (69%)
  4. Leeds (67%)
  5. Manchester (67%)
  6. Newcastle (67%)
  7. Plymouth (67%)
  8. Edinburgh (66%)
  9. Norwich (66%)
  10. Belfast (64%)
Cities that wouldn't help some about to jump off a bridge table by per cent:
  1. Southampton (48%)
  2. Bristol (47%)
  3. London (46%)
  4. Plymouth (45%)
  5. Newcastle (45%)
  6. Norwich (45%)
  7. Leeds (43%)
  8. Birmingham (43%)
  9. Liverpool (42%)
  10. Cardiff (42%)

Virtual College have created a graphic illustrating some interesting statistics from the study:
Peter Hilliard, Marketing Manager Virtual College has commented on the study;
“Whether or not we would feel confident and comfortable to come to the aid of someone in a crisis is a question you might find yourself asking from time to time. These results are particularly interesting as we can clearly see the main reason that stops people from helping is that they do not know what to do. And at Virtual College, we can help with this. We offer a range of courses to businesses and individuals to ensure people are best equipped to deal with any crisis situation they may be presented with.”

SWEET POTATOES: THE PERFECT WINTER SUPERFOOD!

KEEPING MONACO HEALTHY WITH SUSAN TOMASSINI: SWEET POTATOES: THE PERFECT WINTER SUPERFOOD!

Far more nutritious than regular potatoes, these ultra-versatile, root veggies are great for making a whole range of delicious winter recipes – including soups, curries, risotto, fries and even brownies. They’re guilt free too. One medium sweet potato has only 100 calories and plenty of fibre to keep you feeling full and less tempted to over-indulge with holiday treats. Naturally sweet-tasting, their complex carbs are released slowly into your system, providing a balanced source of energy that helps you stay warm and toasty on chilly days.
Vitamin C
Most people know that vitamin C is important to help ward off cold and flu viruses, but few are aware that this crucial vitamin plays an important role in bone and tooth formation, digestion, and blood cell formation. It helps accelerate wound healing, produces collagen which helps maintain skin’s youthful elasticity and is essential to helping us cope with the stress of the holiday season. It even appears to help protect our body against toxins that may be linked to cancer and degenerative disease.

Anti-aging effects
The rich orange colour of sweet potatoes their high concentration of carotenoids like beta carotene, which your body uses to make vitamin A.  Carotenoids help strengthen our eyesight and boost our immunity to disease, they are powerful antioxidants that help protect against the effects of aging. Research has shown that people with the highest blood concentrations of carotenoids had the least likelihood of cancer recurrence.
Versatile
Roast them, purée them, steam them, bake them, or (my favourite) grill them. You can add them to soups and stews, or grill and place on top of leafy greens for a delicious salad. I like them grilled with onions and red peppers. Want the kids to reap their benefits too? Simply cut into wedges, bake in the oven and sprinkle with Himalayan salt. Ketchup optional!

Storing
The ideal temperature for storing sweet potatoes is warmer than the refrigerator and cooler than room temperature. An unheated garage or basement or a cool, dark cabinet or pantry is ideal. If stored properly, they’ll last three to six months. Otherwise, only buy as many as you can eat in a week or two.

  • 2 cups cashews, soaked for 1 hour
  • 1 cup water

  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (use parmesan cheese if you prefer)

  1. Fill all of the shells with a spoonful of sweet potato.
  2. Add a dollop of cashew alfredo onto each shell.
  3. Pour on your choice of tomato sauce.

Sugary drinks linked to increased risk of death!

Sugary drinks linked to increased risk of death

For several years dentists and doctors have warned against drinking too many sugary drinks because of the danger it poses to overall health. A new study has given plenty of reason to say no to sugar.
Startling new research has revealed a link between consuming sugary drinks and an increased risk of death from all causes.
The study involved over 450,000 people across in Europe and showed that those who had two or more soft drinks a day were more at risk of dying from heart disease, bowel disease and strokes.1
As part of the study, researchers investigated soft drink consumption from the United Kingdom, France and Spain.
Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, believes the findings are a stark reminder that a diet packed with added sugar is extremely detrimental for our wellbeing.
Dr Carter says: “In the UK, we have one of the highest rates of sugar consumption worldwide.
“This study is a frightening eye-opener and reminds us that excessive amounts of sugar can be really harmful to our health.
“Added sugar is the main culprit when it comes to several major chronic diseases including tooth decay, diabetes and heart disease.  The toll it takes simply cannot be ignored.  More must be done to drive down sugar consumption and incentivise healthier alternatives.”
Childhood tooth decay and obesity are two widespread issues in the UK that have stemmed from high levels of sugar consumption.
Recent figures from Public Health England suggest children as young as ten have already consumed 18 years’ worth of sugar.2 As a result, tooth decay is currently the most common chronic disease among society’s youngest members.
The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, found that sugary soft drinks were associated with deaths from digestive conditions, such as bowel disease.1   Artificially-sweetened or ‘diet’ soft drinks were strongly linked to deaths from circulatory diseases, such as heart disease and strokes.
“Tooth brushing twice daily, with a fluoride toothpaste, is a crucial aspect of good oral health but it cannot prevent tooth decay caused by excessive sugar consumption,” adds Dr Carter.
“We must look after ourselves and make sure our diet reflects this. Plain still water is the best ‘tooth-friendly’ way of quenching thirst, without putting our health at risk.”
The charity believes the success of the sugar tax, introduced in April 2018, demonstrates the impact that regulation can have on sugar consumption.
Dr Carter says: “The sugar tax shows that government intervention is absolutely necessary for reducing the amount of sugar on supermarket shelves and in British homes. Tighter regulation, along with making healthier alternatives more financially affordable, are the next important steps in fixing the UK’s unhealthy relationship with sugar.”

Uses of Cannabis-Infused Coconut Oil

Cannabis-Infused Coconut Oil
Advanced research on cannabis aims at providing a better version of coconut oil. Cannabis-infused coconut oil has turned out to be an excellent combination with additional health benefits.
Dr. Jay Danniston is an analytical chemist, a food scientist, and director of education at Dixie Brands. He advocates the use of coconut oil as an emulsifier with cannabis products.

How cannabis-infused coconut oil is better than coconut oil?

During recent years, coconut oil has become extremely popular among people for its innumerable health benefits. Every research or study ended with strong recommendations regarding its consumption. It has become an essential ingredient in every kitchen
The tincture is the best form to consume it. Cannabis-infused coconut oil is ideal for consumers who want to avoid chemicals or additives. It is 100 % natural and organic in nature.
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), processed fat in the oil is quite effective for weight loss and weight management. MCT in coconut oil has no taste and no odor.
The qualities make it more suitable to combine with cannabis. They have a good tendency to incorporate together. The presence of unsaturated fat in coconut oil further adds to its beneficial qualities.
Some researchers thought of coconut oil a better option for binding due to the presence of saturated fats. Denniston emphasizes more on health benefits and preservation than on binding quality. Furthermore, the selection of MCT oil depends on additional benefits in terms of the brain, cardiovascular and immune systems.
Both the compounds are good for curing inflammation.  The high concentration of unsaturated fats leads to rancidity. The low concentration of unsaturated fat in MCT oil leads to lower oxidation thus reducing rancidity.
Making weed infused coconut oil is not rocket science. Instead, it is a simple procedure to carry out at home.

Method of preparing cannabis-infused coconut oil at a domestic level

Michelle Latinsky is a director at Alphria Inc. a Canadian Cannabis Company. She explains the easiest methods for its preparation i.e. to heat coconut oil in a saucepan at low flame. Later, add dried cannabis and cook it for 2 to 3 hours.
Keep on stirring off and on. Strain the oil in a heat resistant bowl and store in an airtight container. She uses the oil in her favorite salad of beet and grapefruit with cream of avocado and her favorite lemon tart.
According to the Health Canada report, edibles can take about a time of 30 min to 2 hours to feel the effect and at least 4 hours to draw maximum out of it. A person needs to watch for about 12 to 24 hours to notice the consequence of the cannabis diet. Taking a cannabis-infused diet is a different phenomenon than smoking or vaping.
However, Denniston strongly forbids the use of cannabis-infused coconut oil through vapors. It may lead to deadly consequences of inhaling of cancer-causing agents. The most effective way is to put it under the tongue or to cook in an appropriate dose.
