Women with big butts have always been attractive, but a new study has found that it’s not the actual rear end that men find most appealing about this body type.
Psychology researchers at Turkey’s Bilkent University presented pictures of women’s silhouettes with different degrees of spine curvature to 300 men, Daily Mail reports.
These men were then told to pick which of the women they found most and least attractive.
The majority of them were partial to a spine curvature of 45.5 degrees, seemingly because it made the woman’s butt look bigger.
Researchers also showed the men three pictures of women with butts that were equally large but for different reasons: spine curvature, excess fat and excess muscle.
The woman with the curved spine was deemed most attractive.
This led researchers to conclude that it is the angle of the spine and not the size of the rear end alone that has more of an impact on what men are drawn to.
Dr. David Lewis said,
Men who think they like big bottoms may actually be more into spines. Men may be directing their attention to the butt and obtaining information about women’s spines, even if they are unaware that that is what their minds are doing.
Men have found spines of this specific degree of curvature attractive for centuries due to the effect it had on a woman’s ability to find food and bear children.
Dr. Lewis said that a 45-degree curve allowed women to search for food later into their pregnancies and continue to have children without injuring their backs.
Women without these curved spines would barely be able to move while pregnant, he added, as a spine without such a curve increases the pressure on their hips by almost 800 percent.
The evolutionary benefits of women with these bodies therefore became engrained into the minds of men.
So it seems that the primary reason men are always on the lookout for big butts is that they are subconsciously associated with extensive procreation and increased activity during pregnancy.
The male mind, in other words, is programmed to believe that a woman with a big butt and curved spine is the ideal partner.
