Add These 6 Superfoods To Your Diet This Fall!

http://tasteofbeirut.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/turnip-greens.jpg

Fall is right around the corner and many superfoods will hit their peak season. The autumn harvest brings a wide variety of healthy and delicious produce, from winter squash and sweet potatoes to pears and apples. We also often tend to crave different foods as the seasons turn.
Here are some fall favorites to boost your health and your taste buds.

Apples
Apples are high in fiber and antioxidants while being low in calories. We have lots of varieties to choose from, from sweet to tart. Be sure to eat the skin which contains hearty-healthy flavonoids. As the weather cools off, I recommend a baked apple for dessert. Add spices, such as nutmeg and cinnamon, for an added boost of flavor and health. As an added bonus, an apple a day may even keep your prescription medication away.
Winter squash
Despite its name, winter squash is grown in the summer and harvested in the fall. I am a huge fan of butternut and acorn squash. Not only are these winter squashes nutritious, they are also versatile and, best of all, filling. One cup cooked butternut squash contains only 80 calories, over 6 grams of fiber, and is also rich in beta carotene, vitamin C, and potassium. It tastes great roasted, lightly sauteed in olive oil, or pureed into a soup. I enjoy it as a filling side dish and left overs make for a yummy late afternoon snack.
Beets
Beets are a nutrition powerhouse rich in folate, iron, and fiber. Red beets contain betalains, a powerful antioxidant which gives this veggie its deep red color. Beets offer up health benefits—helping to fight cancer, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Roasted beets make a great addition to a salad and can also be thrown into your favorite green smoothie for an added zest of nutrients and color.
Turnip greens
Greens such as turnip greens, bok choy, and kale are super nutritious and delicious. Turnip greens are one of my favorites: These greens are chock full of nutrients including vitamin K, beta-carotene, vitamin C, folate, potassium, iron, and fiber. They are also high in calcium and contribute to bone health; one cup cooked contains nearly 200 mg calcium. Saute them with a little olive oil, add them to a salad or smoothie, or add chopped turnip greens to veggie casseroles.
Pears
Pears contain a juicy and sweet flavor and are a good source of vitamin C, copper, and fiber. Pears are high in soluble fiber which helps lower “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. Pears are portable and make for an easy snack. Cooking this fruit brings out its flavor, and a poached pear is a great addition to a salad.
Sweet potatoes
A nutrition powerhouse, sweet potatoes are loaded with beta carotene and a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. I recommend roasted sweet potato wedges tossed with a drizzle of olive oil, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Other super healthy foods to include this fall are cauliflower, figs, pomegranates, and pumpkin.

How To Get Healthy (And Stay That Way)

HEALTHY LIVING

We all know the benefits of working out and eating well, but when it comes to our health, knowing and doing -- especially doing over the long-term -- are two very different things! Sure, most of us can be dedicated for a few days -- sometimes a few months -- but long-term change is a whole other ballgame.

I spent the first 18 years of my life on the "be healthy, quit, be healthy, quit" see-saw. As a teenager I was incredibly unhealthy. My mom gave me a membership to the YMCA as a graduation gift. I started to run and lift weights. Before I knew it, the girl who would do anything to get out of gym class was running marathons and lifting weights.
x

In large part I became a personal trainer and fitness writer to share my appreciation and respect for healthy living. If I have learned one thing from my 15 years in the health field, it is that there is no "one-size-fits-all" health plan; everybody is different. Everyone requires a tailored recipe for success.
The problem is, creating a personalized yet effective health plan is tricky, and although there are copious generic programs available, in my opinion realistic and intelligent health guidance is somewhat lacking. In an attempt to fill the lacunae, I wrote Finding Your Fit: A Compassionate Trainer's Guide to Making Fitness a Lifelong Habit. The intent of the book -- due out October 1st, 2016 -- is to provide readers with the tools needed to build their own health recipe so that they can connect the dots between wanting to make a health change and actually making it.
Can't wait for October 1st? No problem. Here are the two main take-aways.

1. Own your health choices; take the time to actively "set yourself up for health success" -- the key words being own and actively. You are an adult; take responsibility for your health choices.
Adopting a healthier lifestyle isn't a passive process. If you don't take the time to set yourself up for success, you might as well be setting yourself up for failure.
Always have a plan...and then a back-up plan.
For example, don't decide you are "destined" to be inactive when you have a busier-than-normal week. Instead, use my "piggyback" strategy. Pinpoint daily, non-negotiable habits that you already do, then turn them into a workout: turn your daily dog walk into a jog or interval workout or have meetings with your colleagues while walking.
As for nutrition, decide in advance how you will handle every event. When going to a restaurant, read the menu online and decide in advance what you will order. Going to someone's house? Offer to bring a healthy option. When in doubt, opt for a lean protein and lots of vegetables, never eat while standing, use a smaller plate when possible, and be mindful of your portions.
2. Stop trying to follow someone else's version of a "perfect" program; put together a unique and realistic plan tailored to fit your individual lifestyle realities.
The plan should take into account your goals, your health history, your lifestyle, your finances, your genetics, and your unique relationship with food. You can stress eat or binge eat out of loneliness on any diet -- lots of people overeat gluten-free cake and Paleo treats. If you don't become aware of your eating patterns, your personal food habits will simply follow you from nutrition program to nutrition program.

A few more helpful take-aways
-When you fall off your health horse, don't allow that not-so-great choice to spiral into multiple unhealthy choices. Instead, learn from your unhealthy decisions so you get back on a more informed rider. Did you let yourself get too hungry? Were you emotionally eating? Did you not take the time to set yourself up for success? Make a mental note of what went wrong, then proactively avoid those situations in the future.
-Adopting a healthier lifestyle is a marathon, not a sprint. Your unhealthy habits were not formed in a day. It is unrealistic to think they can be replaced overnight. Aim to simply have a greater number of healthy habits this month than you had last month --"trend positive."
-Adopting a healthier lifestyle is about self-care, and it is a privilege. It is easy to forget that eating well and exercising are things we are doing for ourselves, not to ourselves. Embrace how lucky you are to have the power to make healthy choices. Find modes of exercise that you are genuinely excited to do; garden, walk with friends, or play a sport. Think of healthy foods that you love -- such as fresh berries or sweet potatoes -- then include those in your weekly diet.
-Some movement is always better than no movement. Every bit of motion adds up, and every situation can be reframed as an opportunity for movement.
-Frame daily movement as a "non-negotiable." Instead of thinking of movement as an if, frame moving as a when.
-Anything worth doing takes mindfulness and perseverance -- and almost nothing is more important than your health.
Finally, remember that when it comes to exercise, getting started is usually the hardest part so use my 10-minute rule. Tell yourself you have to do something for at least 10 minutes. Anyone can do anything for 10 minutes. If after 10 minutes you want to stop, fine. At least you will have done something. Once you start you will usually end up doing a full workout.

Basically, stop waiting for the "perfect" day to start moving. Get up and go for a walk!

8 Ways To Naturally Give Yourself A Colon Cleanse!

A healthy colon is essential for a healthy body. By extracting the water and salt from waste prior to elimination, which in turn maintains the body’s electrolyte balance, the colon helps keep our body and its systems functioning optimally.
The colon can get backed up by waste attaching to its walls, however, which can result in a myriad of health problems, including: headaches, low energy, vomiting, weight gain, skin allergies, acne, constipation, joint pains, indigestion, fatigue, diarrhea, vision issues, loss of memory, stress, bloating, and more. A clogged colon can also lead to numerous diseases, particularly colorectal cancer.
A colon cleanse can rid the body of harmful toxins and wastes that have accumulated as a result of poor diet, lack of exercise, heightened stress, chronic dehydration, drug intake, lifestyle changes, and more.

Here you will find 8 natural remedies for safely cleansing your colon:

1. Drink plenty of water.

Water is essential for human life, yet as many as 75% of all Americans suffer from dehydration. The colon requires water to keep waste flowing. Health experts generally recommend you consume three liters a day to avoid colon blockage, though this number can change depending on your size, the climate you live in, and how frequently and vigorously you exercise.

2. Try prunes.

Prune juice is rich in fibre, which makes it a great option for clearing colon blockage. Try drinking eight ounces before breakfast and another eight ounces after dinner. Once your bowel movements become more frequent, begin tapering yourself off the beverage. Eating dried prunes may also be beneficial, as research published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition found that they may be able to reduce colon cancer.

3. Eat plenty of fibre.

Along with prunes, avocados, berries, coconut, figs, okra, and Brussels sprouts are also great high-fibre options to take advantage of. A high-fibre diet is linked to a lower risk of developing both hemorrhoids and small pouches in your colon called diverticular disease.

4. Drink lemon juice.

Because lemon juice contains antioxidants and high amounts of vitamin C, it is thought to promote proper functioning of the digestive system. The acid in lemon juice “works with the body to nourish and to enhance proper function,” according to Roxanne Sukol, MD, a preventive medicine specialist at the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute. She says that drinking lemon water allows for slow absorption of the nutrients of the foods you consume, which allows for the conservation of insulin in the body, and allows your body to get more out of the food you’re eating. Squeeze the juice from one lemon into a glass of lukewarm water, then add a pinch of sea salt and honey and stir. Drink the solution on an empty stomach in the morning.
Citrus flavonoids are the main cause of improved digestion when drinking warm lemon water.  They aid in the assimilation of food, help prevent fatty liver, decrease chances of cardiovascular disease, fat-lowering, and reduced insulin sensitivity.  This is because it  inhibits certain synthesis of fat in the body.
Citrus flavonoids act as a great digestive tonic, and it also suppresses food cravings.  It’s been shown to calm an upset stomach or mild indigestion.  This has to do with the hydrochloric acid in your stomach that start the process of breaking down your food.  It is believed the citrus flavonoids in lemon water support the hydrochloric acid in the stomach in breaking down food.
The best way to utilize lemon water as a digestion aid is to also include the zest of the lemon which will improve the good bacteria in your gut.

5. Try ginger.

Ginger is great for reducing bloating, while also stimulating the function of the colon to allow for it to expel wastes and harmful toxins. Research has also found that this spice may be able to prevent colon cancer. Try adding a teaspoon of ginger juice to a little honey and water, stirring and consuming several times per day.

6. Use aloe vera.

Aloe vera is highly valued for its detoxifying powers, and can even serve as a laxative, making it an effective tool for cleansing the colon. You can simply cut an aloe vera leaf vertically to squeeze out its gel, add to the juice of one lemon, stir, refrigerate for a couple of hours, and consume several times per day.

7. Eat yogurt.

Yogurt is rich in beneficial probiotics as well as good bacteria that work to rid the body of harmful bacteria. It’s also a great source of calcium, which works to hinder the growth of cells lining the colon. Yogurt is also known for treating stomach issues such as indigestion and irregular bowel movements.

8. Try an apple cider vinegar cleanse.

Apple cider vinegar is full of enzymes that promote probiotic growth. A study from the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany published in a 2008 article in Nutrition concluded that apple pectin and other apple extracts can stimulate the formation of butyrate, which is a nutrient linked to colon health. And Dr. Frank Lipman touted apple cider vinegar as having an impressive ability to improve digestion and ease gastrointestinal issues. Try mixing eight  ounces of warm water with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of organic honey. After shaking and stirring, drink the concoction every morning until you notice regular bowel movements.

Fitness: If you want better results, expect more!

For anyone who has hit a plateau or feels that the return on their investment of time is lacking results, read on.
Everyone wants to be stronger, faster, leaner, but just wanting it isn’t enough. If you want batter results from your training, you have to expect more from yourself.
Demand the best for your body. Whether you’re pedaling away in a group exercise class or grinding your bike up a hill, what do you do when the going gets tough?  When your lungs start screaming and your thighs begin burning, you’ve got to get that inner voice of motivation louder. Remind yourself of the reasons you’re working so hard.
Can you go harder? Can you go longer? What limits are you placing on yourself? Are they genuine or are they just excuses? Do you want to walk away from every training session feeling like you’ve done your very best? Only you know when that is…
Remember that pain is temporary, quitting is forever. You don’t want any regrets. Think back to what your goals were when you started your fitness program and ask yourself if you are on track.
Remember that every workout counts.
Each time you stop yourself short, whether it’s one bad attitude day, one workout, one rep, or just one minute, you’re one step behind in your goal. Make every moment an opportunity to use wisely and not waste it.

Calculate what percentage of your time you’re devoting to your health and fitness. We all have 168 hours in our week to ‘spend.’ How are you spending yours? Can you add activity somewhere?
Get creative and turn off the voice of doubt; starting thinking about what you CAN do. Why not see how far you can go on that bike, on your walk, in the pool, during class. Is it really impossible or are you creating a self-fulfilled prophecy by believing that you can’t achieve?
If you already have belief in yourself and you continue to fall short of your results, persist and expect more. Consider adding just a 20-minute brisk walk or a home body-weight workout three mornings a week. It will rev up your metabolism, give you some additional (and probably much needed) ‘you time’ and add up to an additional four hours of exercise per month – just by making a simple, doable change in your lifestyle.
Be honest with yourself and adopt some WHY NOT thinking? What have you been putting off? When are you going to do it? If not now, when? Why not see what you can become or how much you can grow now?
Enjoying your life through having the best health you can is a great reward for disciplined and consistent effort. Get more by expecting more.

This sweet potato recipe with cashew dip will change the way you think about chips!

It can be challenging creating healthy recipes to entertain friends and family that may not be on the same health path as you. Show them how easy it can be to make a healthy and delicious snack.
Spiced roasted sweet potato chips are always a winner in our eyes, but paired with this dairy-free cashew dip, drizzled with a homemade sweet chili dressing, will definitely please your friends and family on their next visit!

Dip This; Not That

This healthy alternative to chips and dip will help decrease your waistline instead of expanding it.
Popular versions of chips and dip, such as ones made by the well-known brand Tostitos, are home to a multitude of unhealthy ingredients. Here’s the low-down on what you can find in this tasty, yet unhealthy, snack.
  • Tostitos are only made of three ingredients: whole white corn, vegetable oil and salt.
  • Vegetable oil has been found to be harmful when consumed in excess. They contain large amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have been tied to cancer.
  • One serving of Tostitos chips (equivalent to 7 chips) contains 140 calories. Some people are able to consume at least two, three, four or even fives times this amount in one sitting, consuming up to 700 calories from what’s supposed to be just a “snack.”
  • These chips offer you very little nutritional value and are mostly composed of carbohydrates and fat.
  • One serving of Tostitos chips also contains 115 mg of sodium, which is 5% of your daily recommended intake.
On the other hand, the recipe below is high in fibre and balances blood sugar as it’s made from sweet potatoes. Other health benefits of sweet potato include:
  • Anti-inflammatory; reduces chronic inflammation.
  • Choline, a nutrient found in sweet potatoes, helps with sleep, memory, muscle movement and learning.
  • High in Vitamin A, known for boosting immunity, and contributing to skin and vision health.
  • Because of its high fibre content, sweet potatoes help prevent constipation and promote healthy bowel movements.
With this revamped version of chips and dip, you can stop counting calories and start counting on your health.

Bottled Water Exposed (Not Good) & A List Of Brands To Avoid Revealed By Experts!

Back in 1945, government officials began including fluoride in our tap water to improve our dental health.
Found in many name brand toothpastes, it’s thought to help prevent tooth decay. But recent studies have revealed that the chemical can actually do more harm than good, like causing fluorosis — permanent deformation of the teeth.
Overexposure to fluoride, leading to fluorosis, is typically seen in children during the first eight years of their life, when their permanent teeth are beginning to form. The physical deformities caused include yellow to dark brown staining of the teeth, irregularities in the surface of the teeth, and large, noticeable pits that can form holes in the teeth.
Fluoride can also negatively impact their cognitive development. In fact, a study conducted in China found that children who grew up in areas with high levels of fluoride in their drinking water scored, on average, significantly less on IQ tests than children in lower-fluoride areas.
Senior study author Philippe Grandjean attributed the lower IQ scores to the toxic effect that fluoride has on the developing brain. “Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain,” Grandjean explained. “The effect of each toxicant may seem small, but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious, especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us.”
Nearly 75 percent of the U.S. population receives drinking water that contains 0.7-1.2 parts per million (ppm) fluoride to prevent tooth decay. These levels are based on recommendations from the federal government made more than four decades ago.
“Just because we did studies over the last 70 years, it doesn’t mean that we did everything that is necessary to know for sure that fluoridation is not toxic to some processes in the body or development of the brain. Those studies have actually not been done,” noted Grandjean, who is also an adjunct professor of environmental health and the head of the Research Unit at the University of Southern Denmark, and author of Only One Chance: How Environmental Pollution Impairs Brain Development – and How to Protect the Brains of the Next Generation.
In light of these revelations, you’d think bottled water would be the safe bet, right? That’s why we make sure to skip filling up from the tap and invest our money in brands that claim to have the best quality water for our health. Unfortunately, it seems that bottled versions aren’t always as pure as we’ve been led to believe.
Many brands actually use municipal tap water and could contain fluoride, while certain spring water is reported to also contain the chemical, according to the Arab Tribune.
A study published in the Journal of Epidemiological & Community Health discovered that those who consume fluoridated water are more likely to suffer from thyroid issues.
“In many areas of the world, hypothyroidism is a major health concern and in addition to other factors—such as iodine deficiency—fluoride exposure should be considered as a contributing factor. The findings of the study raise particular concerns about the validity of community fluoridation as a safe public health measure,” the study authors concluded.
To avoid buying a bottled water brand that contains fluoride, do not purchase the following brands:
Alhambra, Sierra Springs, Sparkletts, Arrowhead, Mount Olympus, Belmont Springs, Poland Spring, Crystal Rock, Crystal Springs, Shenandoah, Deer Park, Diamond Springs, Nursery Water, Hindley Spri, Ice Mountain, Kandiyohi, Puritan Springs, Kentwood Springs, Mayer Bros., Ozarka, Pure Flo, and Zephyrhills.
Safer bets for water bottle brands that do not contain fluoride include:
Aquafina, Crystal Point, Dannon, Deja Blue, Evian, Fresh Market, Great Value, Smart Water, Summit Mountains, and Summit Springs.

Important Facts About Bottled Water

1. Bottled Water is More Expensive Than Tap Water
According to Business Insider, the bottled water industry “grossed a total of $11.8 billion on 9.7 billion gallons (of water) in 2012, making bottled water about $1.22/gallon nationwide and 300x the cost of a gallon of tap water. If we take into account the fact that almost 2/3 of all bottled water sales are single 16.90z (500mL) bottles, though, this cost is much, much higher: about $7.50 per gallon, according to the American Water Works Association. That’s almost 2,000x the cost of a gallon of tap water and twice the cost of a gallon of regular gasoline.”
The article goes on to mention several other shocking statistics, like the fact that bottled water consumption and sales have increased approximately 350% respectively since the tracking of the dollar amounts in 1991. In that year alone, Americans spent $2.5 billion on 2.4 billion gallons (about $1.07/gallon).
The plastic bottles of water we buy every week in the United States alone could circle the globe five times. That’s not a comfortable thought, and it should have us questioning our activities on the planet, and whether or not the convenience is worth the cost in ecological damage.
2. Potentially Harmful Chemicals In Bottled Water
Truth is, it takes a lot of oil to make plastic bottles. The amount of oil it takes to make plastic water bottles in the United States alone could fuel approximately one million cars and light trucks for a year. (source)

Not long ago, German researchers discovered endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), that could adversely affect development and reproduction, to be contained in 18 popular name brand bottled water products. Of the 24,520 suspect chemicals found to be present in bottled water, the one that showed consistent results and illustrated anti-androgenic and anti-estrogenic activity was di(2-ethylhexyl) fumarate (DEHF). Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with the hormone system; they can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, cardiovascular disorders, metabolic disorders, and, as mentioned earlier, other developmental disorders.

“An increasing number of in vitro studies reports the presence of EDCs in bottled water [12][13][14][15][17]. With previous studies focusing on estrogenicity, the present work provides evidence for an additional contamination with steroid receptor antagonists. Using an optimized extraction procedure, we detected antiestrogens and antiandrogens in the majority of analyzed bottled water products. Moreover, the antagonist activity was very potent. An equivalent of 3.75 mL bottled water inhibited estrogen and androgen receptor by up to 60 and 90%, respectively. . . . From a broader perspective, bottled water from six different countries has been found to contain estrogenic [12][13][14][15][17], antiestrogenic, and antiandrogenic (this study), as well as androgenic, progestagenic, and glucocorticoid-like chemicals [16]. This demonstrates that a popular beverage is contaminated with diverse-acting EDCs.” (source)
Researchers used spectrometric simulation to narrow down their findings to DEHF as the only possible EDC giving rise to harmful activity. DEHF is also known as an anti-estrogenic compound, which means that another unidentified EDC must be present in the samples that showed anti-androgenic activity
3. Bottled Water Could Potentially Be of Lower Quality Than Tap Water
Not long ago the city of Cleveland conducted a test on the Fiji Water brand and discovered that their water actually contained traces of arsenic, while the city’s own water supply did not.
How is this possible?
“Bottled water manufacturers are not required to disclose as much information as municipal water utilities because of gaps in federal oversight authority, according to reports released yesterday by government auditors. Bottom line: The Food and Drug Administration oversees bottled water, and U.S. EPA is in charge of tap water. FDA lacks the regulatory authority of EPA, John Stephenson of the Government Accountability Office told a House panel.”  – Sarah Goodman of the New York Times

The list is a long one, and it’s pretty ridiculous when you think about the fact that there are almost one billion people on this planet who do not have access to clean drinking water. More frustrating still is the reality that it doesn’t need to be this way. Children are dying by the minute from waterborne diseases and we have spent billions of dollars trying to vaccinate these populations, yet the same level of effort is not being made to provide clean drinking water to various communities around the world.
Our greed seems to be the source of this problem… what do you think?

How 'Brainwave-Balancing' Therapy Could Ease Migraines!

A new type of therapy that uses sound waves to "balance" people's brain activity might help lower blood pressure and reduce symptoms of migraines, early research suggests.
The therapy is known as HIRREM, which stands for high-resolution, relational, resonance-based, electroencephalic mirroring. For the treatment, patients place sensors — which measure the brain's electrical activity, or brainwaves — on their scalp. The sensors are used to detect whether there are imbalances in the brain's activity between the left and right sides of the brain.
Such imbalances can reflect improper regulation of the autonomic nervous system — the system that's responsible for controlling unconscious bodily functions, such as breathing and heart rate, the researchers said.
A computer then identifies the dominant (or most prominent) brain frequencies, and a software program coverts these brain frequencies into auditory tones, which are played back in real time. Patients listen to these sounds through headphones.
The researchers call these sounds a "reflection" of the brain's activity. They say that the brain can recognize that the tones reflect what is going on in the organ. Once a patient starts hearing the tones, "the electrical pattern tends to shift towards improved balance," study co-author Hossam Shaltout, an assistant professor in the Hypertension and Vascular Research Center at Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina, said in a statement.
In one small study, the researchers tested HIRREM on 10 men and women with high blood pressure. They underwent about 18 HIRREM sessions over 10 days, after which their average systolic blood pressure was reduced from 152 to 136 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), and their average diastolic pressure was reduced from 97 to 81 mmHg. (Systolic blood pressure is the "top" number in a blood pressure reading and diastolic pressure is the "bottom" number.)
The participants' heart rate variability — which is a measure of the variations in the interval between heartbeats — increased, on average, from 43 to 57 milliseconds. This is a good outcome, because it means that the body has more flexibility to change heart rate in response to blood pressure, Shaltout said.
In another study, 52 adults with migraines underwent about 16 HIRREM sessions over nine days. At the end of the study, participants reported improvements in their headache symptoms.
Because the findings are preliminary and the studies are small, more research is needed to confirm the results, and to determine the ways in which the therapy could be working, the researchers said.
Dr. Kevin Weber, a neurologist and headache specialist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, who was not involved in the studies, pointed out that neither of these studies included a control group, or a group that received a placebo or "dummy" treatment. The inclusion of a control group is important, because it's possible that the results were due to the placebo effect, Weber said. A placebo effect is one that results from people's belief that the treatment works, rather than from any physiological effect of the treatment.
"I think it is a promising technology," Weber said. However, more research is needed "to make sure that it actually works, as opposed to just being a placebo effect," Weber said.
In 2013, the same group of researchers did conduct a smaller migraine study that included a control group. In that study, which was presented at the 2013 International Headache Congress in Boston, 16 people received the HIRREM treatment and 14 people received a placebo treatment. For the placebo treatment, the participants heard randomly generated musical tones, as opposed to tones that reflected their brainwaves.
The study showed that after the treatments, the likelihood of experiencing a headache was about the same in both groups. But this could have been because the study was too small to detect a meaningful difference between the groups, the researchers said.
Migraines are thought to be caused by abnormalities in the electrical activity of the brain, so it's possible that a treatment like HIRREM, which alters the brain's electrical activity, could affect migraines, Weber said. And the brain and nervous system also play a role in the regulation of blood pressure, so it's possible that HIRREM could have an effect on blood pressure as well, he said.
The researchers also noted that patients in the blood pressure study experienced reduced symptoms of insomnia and anxiety, which might also have an effect on blood pressure.
The studies will be presented this week at the American Heart Association's Council on Hypertension 2016 Scientific Sessions in Orlando. The HIRREM technology is a product of the company Brain State Technologies, which is based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Researchers at Wake Forest School of Medicine have been evaluating HIRREM since 2011, with funding mainly from non-industry sources.
The two new studies were funded by The Susanne Marcus Collins Foundation.
