More than 1,300 in Quarantine as South Korea Battles MERS Virus

By GILLIAN MOHNEY

More than 1,300 people are in quarantine in South Korea as the country grapples with an outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus, and at least two people have died from the disease, authorities said.

A person traveling from the Middle East to South Korea is believed to be patient zero in the country, according to a report from the World Health Organization. When the 68-year-old man arrived at a hospital for treatment, he was not initially put into isolation because the deadly MERS virus was not suspected by medical officials, according to the WHO report.

Director-General of Public Health Policy at South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare, Kwon Jun-wook, addressed reporters today and said that at least 30 people had been infected with the virus and another 398 were "possibly infected."

In total, there were at least 1,364 patients in quarantine as health officials work to contain the deadly virus, authorities said. Patient zero is still alive but two others have died from MERS, South Korean health officials said.

Residents in South Korea said they were concerned as news spread of the disease.

MERS "is dangerous. I think if I don't take precautions, I can contract the disease, so I wear this mask for prevention," Kim Sung-taek told the Associated Press Television Network. "In order to take off this mask soon, I think the South Korean government should focus more on this problem [MERS] and act proactively."

Dr. Stephen Morse, an infectious disease expert at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, said the quick spread of the virus will mean that officials will likely investigate if the virus has mutated and become more contagious.
“The other thing is that the extent to which this has spread in Korea with the 30 cases raises questions," Morse told ABC News. "Have the conditions for transmission been more favorable?"
Morse clarified that he believes it’s unlikely that the virus had mutated greatly and said past genotypes of the virus have revealed they remain very similar in both humans and animals.
"One of the problems is that there’s a lot about the epidemiology of MERS that’s poorly understood and not known at all," Morse explained. "Assuming [this outbreak is] like the cases we’ve seen so far I wouldn’t expect most of the people under quarantine are likely to be infected or show signs of disease."
Symptoms of the virus include fever, cough, diarrhea and shortness of breath and the disease has an incubation period between 2 to 14 days. The virus is spread through close contact with an infected person or animal. In Saudi Arabia, where virus was first identified in 2012, contact with infected camels has been linked as a likely cause for infection in humans.

Cancer overtakes cardiovascular disease as UK's No. 1 killer—but only among men

cancer

Cancer has overtaken cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and stroke, as the UK's No 1 killer—but only among men, reveals research published online in the journal Heart.
The researchers used the latest nationally available data (2012-13) for each of the four UK countries and the Cardiovascular Disease Statistics 2014 report compiled for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to quantify the prevalence of cardiovascular disease, and find out how it's treated, how much it costs, and how many deaths it causes.Cardiovascular disease is still the most common cause of death among women, and kills more young women than breast cancer, the figures show.
Cardiovascular disease includes coronary , stroke, , circulatory system disease, and other vascular/arterial disease.
The researchers analysed entries to the Clinical Practice Research Datalink GOLD database, the world's largest repository of anonymised records for primary care, plus information from the family doctor (GP) quality improvement scheme known as QOF, and figures on episodes of inpatient hospital care.
The analysis indicated that just short of 2.3 million people were living with some form of coronary heart disease in 2012. Around half a million were living with heart failure and a further 1.1 million were living with  (atrial fibrillation).
England had the lowest prevalence of all  out of the four UK countries. But there were regional variations, with higher rates of cardiovascular disease in the North of England than in the South of the country.
Scotland had the highest prevalence of , stroke, and , while Wales had the highest prevalence of high blood pressure, heart failure, and .
For the first time since the middle of the 20th century, cancer overtook cardiovascular disease as the primary cause of death in 2012. The proportion of deaths attributable to cancer was 29% while cardiovascular disease accounted for 28%.But this was only true of men; cardiovascular disease still killed more women than cancer. Almost one in three deaths (32%) in men were caused by cancer compared with 29% for cardiovascular disease. The equivalent figures were 27% and 28%, respectively, for women.Cardiovascular disease accounted for a total of nearly 42,000 premature deaths (before the age of 75) in 2012, accounting for more than one in four premature deaths in men and around one in five (18%) in women. But it still killed more young women than did breast cancer.
Once again, there were wide regional variations in death rates. There were higher rates in Scotland (347/100,000 of the population) and the North of England (320/100,000), and lower rates in the South of England.
The City of Glasgow topped the league table for death rates from cardiovascular disease for all ages, including premature deaths.
The number of surgical procedures and drugs prescribed to treat and prevent cardiovascular disease has risen substantially over the past two decades, and in 2012-13 the NHS spent just under £7 billion in England alone on cardiovascular disease, the largest chunk of which was spent on hospital care.
The equivalent cost in Wales was £442.3 million, £393 million in Northern Ireland, and more than £750 million in Scotland.
"Cardiovascular disease remains a substantial burden to the UK, both in terms of health and economic costs," write the researchers, highlighting the "stark regional inequalities in the mortality and prevalence of [cardiovascular disease]."
In a linked editorial, Dr Adam Timmis, of the NIHR Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit at Barts Health, London, describes the more than 40% drop in cardiovascular disease death rates since 1960 as "among the greatest public health triumphs in the past 50 years." But the continuing North-South divide is a "stain on the UK's public health record," he writes.
The [BHF] report provides a timely reminder that in young women too [] kills more women than breast cancer. Most of these deaths in young women are caused by myocardial infarction [ attack] which is largely preventable through modification of risk factors," he points out.
"And if the national effort put into the detection of breast cancer could be matched in protecting  against myocardial infarction many more lives would probably be saved," he insists.

Researchers Find Missing Link Between the Brain and Immune System

Maps of the lymphatic system: old (left) and updated to reflect UVA’s discovery. Image credit: University of Virginia Health System.
As to how the brain’s lymphatic vessels managed to escape notice all this time, Kipnis described them as “very well hidden” and noted that they follow a major blood vessel down into the sinuses, an area difficult to image. “It’s so close to the blood vessel, you just miss it,” he said. “If you don’t know what you’re after, you just miss it.”
“Live imaging of these vessels was crucial to demonstrate their function, and it would not be possible without collaboration with Tajie Harris,” Kipnis noted. Harris, a PhD, is an assistant professor of neuroscience and a member of the BIG center. Kipnis also saluted the “phenomenal” surgical skills of Igor Smirnov, a research associate in the Kipnis lab whose work was critical to the imaging success of the study.
Alzheimer’s, Autism, MS and Beyond
The unexpected presence of the lymphatic vessels raises a tremendous number of questions that now need answers, both about the workings of the brain and the diseases that plague it. For example, take Alzheimer’s disease. “In Alzheimer’s, there are accumulations of big protein chunks in the brain,” Kipnis said. “We think they may be accumulating in the brain because they’re not being efficiently removed by these vessels.” He noted that the vessels look different with age, so the role they play in aging is another avenue to explore. And there’s an enormous array of other neurological diseases, from autism to multiple sclerosis, that must be reconsidered in light of the presence of something science insisted did not exist.

Abstract
Structural and functional features of central nervous system lymphatic vessels
One of the characteristics of the central nervous system is the lack of a classical lymphatic drainage system. Although it is now accepted that the central nervous system undergoes constant immune surveillance that takes place within the meningeal compartment1, 2, 3, the mechanisms governing the entrance and exit of immune cells from the central nervous system remain poorly understood4, 5, 6. In searching for T-cell gateways into and out of the meninges, we discovered functional lymphatic vessels lining the dural sinuses. These structures express all of the molecular hallmarks of lymphatic endothelial cells, are able to carry both fluid and immune cells from the cerebrospinal fluid, and are connected to the deep cervical lymph nodes. The unique location of these vessels may have impeded their discovery to date, thereby contributing to the long-held concept of the absence of lymphatic vasculature in the central nervous system. The discovery of the central nervous system lymphatic system may call for a reassessment of basic assumptions in neuroimmunology and sheds new light on the aetiology of neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases associated with immune system dysfunction.

Do You Think Your Diet Is Messed Up? Today Is The Day To Remedy It, And Here’s How!

Let’s reverse the time clock a little and think about how man matured from being a raw-food-eating beast to being the fast-food maven that he is today. Back then, food was man’s pathway to survival; it satisfied his supreme need to live and flourish. Today, several centuries later, along with the great amount of ecological, technological and economical progress we have made, our palates have also evolved tremendously. The food choices of many of us have diversified beyond merely serving the purpose of nutrition and survival. Flavours and palatableness often take precedence over health benefits and nutritive value in determining the foods we eat. Unsurprisingly, our health suffers a huge blow making us more susceptible to epidemics such as cancer, stroke, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity. If you think your health is at an all time low owing to your poor dietary habits, here are five tips to help you improve your diet:
  • Cut Down On The Refined Carbs And Sugar - Did you know that those “comfort foods” you rely on during stressful situations, in fact, do your body more harm than good? Modern diets that are rich in refined carbs and sugar are the underlying cause for many ailments. A high amount of refined sugar in your diet could increase your risk of developing schizophrenia and depression, a study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry reports. An overdose of refined sugar in your diet can also put you at an increased risk for cardiometabolic diseases and hypertension. Refined carbs, contained in pasta, white bread, white rice, etc. are also hazardous to your health. They deprive your body of the necessary fiber, vitamins B, E, bran and germ while only providing starch, thus increasing the chances of insulin resistance and obesity. If you have a sweet tooth, try and stick to natural sweeteners like honey and enjoy fresh fruits instead of donuts and pastries. Opt for whole wheat bread, cereals and brown rice.
  • Include More Fruits And Veggies In Your Diet – Do you abstain from these natural health boosters because they don’t satisfy your taste buds? It’s time you embrace their goodness and contribute to your overall health and wellbeing! Fruits and vegetables are indeed the best additions to your daily diet owing to their high nutrient content. They help keep you fuller for long periods while aiding your bowel movements, given their high fiber content. They are also rich in antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E that help your body fight oxidative damage thereby protecting you from cancers, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, macular degeneration and premature aging. Being low in calories, they provide you with a much healthier meal or snack alternative as compared to fast or processed foods. Fruits and veggies are packed with other essential nutrients like RBC-boosting iron, wear-and-tear-fighting proteins and heart-healthy unsaturated fats. You can season your vegetable recipes with amazing cilantro like herbs and turmeric like spices. Not only do they help improve the flavour of the dish, but also add to its health-boosting properties because of their high antioxidant content.
  • Say No To Trans-Fats - If the first thing that you order at the fast-food joint down the street is a plate of fries, you are piling on dangerous trans-fats that increase inflammation and lower good cholesterol. Trans fats are present in many packaged foods as they help increase their shelf-life. Higher intake of trans fat increases susceptibility to all-cause mortality, as per a study conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Unlike trans fat, unsaturated fats like omega-3 and omega-6 improve heart health. Make sure to include healthy-fat-rich nuts, olive oil, fish, seeds, and avocados in your diet.
  • Maintain A Nutrition Journal - One of the best ways to monitor your food intake is to maintain a nutrition journal. Prepare an elaborate dietary chart that includes a balanced mix of all essential food sources in their recommended quantities. Reach out to a certified nutritionist to help you devise a diet chart given your age, weight, height, BMI and other health concerns. At the start of each day, refer to the nutrition journal and as far as possible, avoid deviating from it.
  • Skim Through The Food Labels Properly - Just because a food brand claims to be healthy doesn’t mean it is healthy indeed. For example, a lot of foods that claim to be low-fat contain excess sugar to make up for their lost flavor. You must make it a regular practice to read the labels of foods before buying them. Check for the amount of calories, dietary fiber, calcium, protein, iron, vitamins and other essential nutrients contained in the foods, and GMO’s. Keep a keen eye on trans-fats, saturated fats, sugar, and sodium content in foods.
Apart from what you eat, how you eat also makes a difference. Ensure that you thoroughly chew your food rather than gulping it down quickly. The digestive process begins right from your mouth, and the enzymes in your saliva aid better digestion, thereby preventing gut problems like gas. Drink plenty of water all through the day as it not only helps keep you hydrated but also helps your body flush out toxins. It’s never too late to adopt a healthy change in your diet and lifestyle.

How High Quality Moringa can be used to help enhance your performance-Video

How high quality moringa powder and oil can be used to enhance your performance. Fitness coach and Calisthenics Athlete The Spindoctor uses Award Winning High Quality Moringa Leaf Powder to revitalise and gain more energy....

LEMON & BAKING SODA – THIS COMBINATION SAVES LIVES

The combination of lemon and baking soda has 10,000 times stronger effect than chemotherapy! Why was this fact kept as a secret? Being totally aware of the powerful properties lemon provides is completely opposite to the interest some world organisations have. For that reason, we recommend you share this article and help a friend who needs it!
Do you have any idea what’s the recent number of deaths caused by the fact that this is being kept secret, in order to protect large corporations?
Lemon-And-Baking-Soda-Combination-Saves-Lives
Numerous studies have proven the anti-cancer properties of lemon. Lemon also provides other benefits, including its strong power in treating cyst and tumors.
Lemons have the power to cure cancer, since it has been tested on all cancer types. Adding baking soda makes it even more powerful, because baking soda brings pH to normal level.
Lemon also has potent antimicrobial effect in treating bacterial and fungal infections. It is effective in the fight against internal parasites and it regulates blood pressure. Lemon is beneficial for the nervous system as well – it is a powerful antidepressant, reducing stress and calming nerve crises.
Lemon-And-Baking-Soda-Combination-Saves-Lives2
One of the largest drug manufacturers claims that 20 laboratory experiments, conducted since 1970 until recently, proved that:
Lemon destroys cancer cells in 12 cancer types. It prevents metastasis of cancer cells and it is 10 000 stronger than drugs like Adriamycin, chemotherapy and narcotic products.
What is more interesting is the fact that the combination of lemon extract and baking soda destroys cancer cells only, without harming healthy cells and tissues.
The experiments have shown that patients diagnosed with cancer should drink lemon juice and a teaspoon of baking soda. This treatment can not cure the disastrous side effects of chemotherapy.
The best way to be sure that lemons are organic without any chemicals used is to grow this fruit in your own garden or in a pot. Organic lemons are 100 times more efficient than lemons cultivated with chemical fertilizers and treated with chemicals.
Testimonies on Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) by Dr. Sircus
The following testimonies from the bicarbonate book highlight bicarbonate’s use as a pain reliever:
“After suffering from a 4 hour long blinding headache for which nothing I took brought any relief, I tried the sodium bicarbonate, 1 tsp mixed in a glass of water. Within a few short minutes I could feel the headache abating and within the hour it was completely relieved! I tried this again when another headache occurred, and it worked just as miraculously.”
“This is the best pain reliever of all the ones I have been trying. I am amazed that something so simple would be so potent! I haven’t exceeded 7 a day; but wish I could. It takes the pain away for about 2 hours. Nothing seems to work more then 2 hours at a time.”
My father was a veterinarian and as far back as I can remember (I was born in 1938 so my memory goes back to maybe 1943) he would take sodium bicarbonate dissolved in a full glass of warm water whenever he felt a cold coming on. I don’t remember him ever coming down with a full blown cold. He would treat my cold symptoms likewise and I responded equally as well.
He also treated farm animals for various illnesses with sodium bicarbonate via a gastric tube and they recovered quickly. So I’ve known about the benefits of sodium bicarbonate from early childhood on. Glad to see that its benefits are being more widely touted. Although my father was a doctor of Veterinarian medicine, he sometimes referred to himself as an MD (Mule Doctor). 5 Signs You’re Sleep Deprived

Our bodies give us plenty of signals when we’re tired. But some of us are so used to being sleep deprived that we remain oblivious to how impaired we really are. Sleep debt isn’t something you can pay off in a weekend, researchers say—it can take weeks of building up restorative sleep habits.  Here are some signs you may need to make sleep a more urgent priority.

Simple decisions stump you

You’re up late one night booking your next vacation, and even though you know the dates and destination, you’re overwhelmed by minor details. Should you get a refundable ticket? Window or aisle seat? Rent a car now or later? When you’re tired, you’re less able to distinguish between important and irrelevant information, such as your seat assignment, according to Sean Drummond, PhD, a sleep researcher at the University of California, San Diego. The result: Even the simplest decision takes on exaggerated importance.
Tired people also take riskier gambles to maximize results (Maybe if I wait until the last minute, the ticket price will go down) and have trouble adjusting to changing circumstances (like firming up an itinerary if flying from an unfamiliar airport).

You’re still hungry—after eating all day

Shortchanging your nightly sleep can make your waistline suffer. Studies show that chronic sleep loss can disrupt blood sugar levels and cause the body to produce less leptin, a hormone that curbs appetite, and more ghrelin, leptin’s hunger-stimulating counterpart. Because of these physiological changes, you may be more likely to overeat when you skimp on sleep—and the food you pick probably won’t be either nutritious or a lasting source of energy.
Tired people tend to be particularly drawn to sugars and other simple carbohydrates, probably because the body is looking for a quick pick-me-up, says Lisa Shives, MD, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Sleep deprivation also tends to erode self-control, making you more likely to choose a brownie over carrot sticks.

You keep coming down with colds

Inadequate sleep can leave you more vulnerable to infection than those who are well rested. In one study, researchers injected healthy volunteers with a cold virus. Those who slept less than 7 hours a night for the previous week were 3 times more likely to develop symptoms than those who got 8 hours or more. In another study, people who got only 4 hours of sleep for several nights in a row had a weaker immune response to the flu vaccine than those who slept between 7.5 and 8.5 hours.

Weird things make you cry

Do those ballads on American Idol move you to tears? Try going to bed earlier. Don’t automatically chalk up your sudden weepiness to PMS: Without sleep, you are more emotionally volatile. In one brain-imaging study, for example, people who missed a night of sleep and viewed disturbing images had 60% more activity in the amygdala, which is involved in processing fear and anxiety, compared with better-rested volunteers. The study also found that the sleepy volunteers’ amygdalae communicated less with the part of the brain that determines appropriate emotional responses, suggesting that they weren’t doing a good job of tempering their emotions.
When we’re sleep deprived, we may also feel glum because tired brains store negative memories more effectively than positive or neutral ones. As a result of all this, Shives says, “if you are chronically sleep deprived, you could act like someone with depression.”

You’ve become a klutz

One moment you’re pouring yourself a bowl of cereal and the next thing you know, you’ve spilled it all over your newly cleaned floors.
Sound familiar? Researchers have accumulated ample evidence that the sleep deprived have slower and less precise motor skills, but exactly why isn’t yet known, says Clete Kushida, MD, PhD, director of Stanford University Center for Human Sleep Research. Sleepy people may be clumsier for several reasons: Impaired reflexes and a lack of focus may make it hard for them to react quickly enough to things that spring up in their path.
Another possibility: Sleepiness throws off balance or depth perception. In any case, it’s not uncommon for very sleepy people to black out momentarily when the body’s urge to sleep gets too strong. So it’s possible that your klutziness stems from “microsleeps” that last for a second or two, Kushida says—just long enough to trip on the curb or drop a glass.

Boost Your Metabolism All Day Long

You May Not Realize It, but while you’re bumming it on the couch catching up on New Girl, your body is working hard to help you burn calories.  How is that even possible? Well, thank your sweet, sweet metabolism.
The cool part: You can speed it up to ensure it’s torching the maximum number of cals. All you have to do is follow these 11 super-easy tips.

When You First Wake Up

Eating breakfasts helps jumpstart your metabolism—especially if you do it within one hour of waking up. “Your metabolism went into rest mode over night, so your first meal of the day revs it up again,” says Keri Gans, R.D.N., author of The Small Change Diet. To work the kick-start effect to the max, choose foods high in fiber and protein, like whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk and berries.

During Your Commute

Parking farther away from your office may sound like a small step, but it can actually boost your metabolism in a big way because it forces you to move more. “Getting your heart rate up for a short period of time keeps it elevated afterward, which boosts your metabolism overall,” says Doug Barsanti, M.A., strength and conditioning specialist and owner of ReInvention Fitness in Santa Cruz, California. Another good idea? Take the stairs to get to your floor.

When You First Get to the Office

Go ahead and grab a cup of joe. Research shows that caffeine boosts your metabolic rate, albeit mildly, says David Katz, M.D., director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center and author of Disease Proof. Just watch all the caramel-cream-whatever concoctions—those are so sugary that they’ll negate coffee’s benefits.

At Work

We hereby grant you permission to schmooze with your co-workers—as long as you don’t do it over G-chat. “Moving moreat every opportunity, even if it’s just to get up to go to the bathroom, keeps your heart rate going and therefore boosts your metabolism,” says Shirley Archer, an ACE-certified group fitness instructor. Try walking across the office to talk to co-workers rather than e-mailing them—or use any of these other great ideas for how to move more at work.

When You’re Buying Lunch

Pick the right foods, and you’ll stoke your metabolism. “Nothing beats a turkey sandwich on whole-grain bread with lettuce, tomato, and mustard and a piece of fruit on the side,” says Gans. “The protein-carb combo will give you energy to get through your day without dragging.”

At the Water Cooler

When it comes to water, colder is better. “Your body burns more calories in colder temperatures because it has to work harder to keep you warm—so by drinking cold water, you end up burning more than if you guzzled room-temp H20,” says Lisa Gain, Ph.D., evolutionary biologist and founder of snack-girl.com. (Sadly, the same does not hold true for ice cream, which is too high-cal to get the effect. Womp!)

During Your Workout

It’s all too easy to get into a cardio routine and stay at the same pace for your entire workout—but don’t! Intervals are your friend, says Barsanti. “Short, high-intensity exercise boosts your metabolism. So when you’re on the treadmill or elliptical, sprint for 30 seconds, then rest for 30 seconds, and repeat this pattern for 10 minutes.” Pro tip: Make a playlist with fast and slow songs to help you vary your rhythm without even thinking about it.

Post-Workout

Good news for chocolate lovers! Drinking chocolate milk post-workout helps keep your metabolism going strong. “When you exercise, your body loses glucose,” says Gans. “You need to restore it right away to keep your metabolism on track.” Chocolate milk is ideal because it has the perfect combo of carbs and protein. Sweet!

At Dinner

Some studies suggest that eating spicy foods may boost your metabolism—so top your meals with chili peppers and Tabasco. Bonus: Spices are naturally fat free, so there’s no need to stress about calorie counts.

In the Evening

Take a minute to relax, and your metabolism will thank you. Why? “When you get stressed, your body releases cortisol, and too much cortisol slows down your metabolism,” says Archer. To prevent this, do whatever relaxes you most, like yoga, talking to a soothing friend, or meditating.

At Bedtime

Sleep is key to boosting your metabolism. “Your body needs it to fully restore and recover from the day and keep your muscle mass and hormones circulating properly,” says Archer. Aim for seven to eight hours a night to keep your metabolism in tip-top shape.

Seven Foods That Fight Inflammation and Belly Fat

Fruits and vegetables

All fruits and vegetables, due to their rich nutrient and fiber content, help to combat chronic inflammation, so make sure to include adequate amounts of these foods daily. Some types of fresh produce, however, are even more potent than others.
Some terrific anti-inflammatory fruits and vegetables to include in your meal plan include apples, berries, broccoli, mushrooms, papaya, pineapple, and spinach.
This mild beverage is great for helping shrink your waistline as well as for decreasing inflammation. The flavonoids in this tea have natural anti-inflammatory properties. And the compound EGCG in green tea has been shown to help reduce body fat.

Monounsaturated fats

These heart-healthy fats help raise your healthy HDL cholesterol levels and reduce overall inflammation. Great sources include olive oil, almonds, and avocado.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Research has shown that a diet with a high percentage of omega-3 fatty acids and a low percentage of omega-6 fatty acids has been linked with decreased inflammation. Food sources of omega-3s include walnuts, flaxseed, and fish, such as wild Alaskan salmon.

    Spices

Certain spices, including garlic, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and chili peppers, have potent inflammation-reducing capabilities, so try adding them to meals as often as possible.
    Water

Staying hydrated is essential to flushing inflammation-causing toxins out of your body. Aim for 64 ounces of water per day. Remember: Add an additional 8 ounces of water for every 30 minutes of exercise as well.

    Whole grains

Rich in fiber, whole grains help control the insulin response in your body. The high B vitamin content of whole grains also helps reduce the inflammatory hormone homocystine in the body.

11 Seriously Wonderful Self-Massage Tips That Will Make You Feel Amazing

    Anna Borges
Everyone deals with aches and pains, but not everyone has the time or cash for a professional massage. Here are 11 massages you can do to yourself that will leave you feeling so good.

BuzzFeed Life spoke to Sulyn Silbar, ACSM-certified personal trainer and founder of Body + Mind NYC, and Luke Bongiorno, physical therapy director of NY SportsMed & Physical Therapy, who recommended these simple self-massages. You can do some with your hands only, while others require the aid of a tennis ball or foam roller — but all are super easy and only take a few minutes, no professional required.

    1. If your feet are killing you:

11 Seriously Wonderful Self-Massage Tips That Will Make You Feel AmazingThe best part about this move is you can do it under your desk without interrupting whatever you’re doing. You can use a regular tennis ball, but Silbar recommends a spiked ball like this one, which will leave you feeling airy on your feet.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. While sitting, step on the ball with a bare or socked foot and roll back and forth from heel to toe with firm pressure — but don’t try to flatten the ball completely.
    2. If anywhere feels particularly painful or tender, work those knots out by rolling in small circles.
If you need more pressure: Do while standing instead of sitting.

    2. If you suffer from tension headaches:

This will relieve tension in your neck and head often caused by crappy posture — like when you crane your neck while texting or push your head forward when slumping at a desk.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. Lie on your back with your legs bent.
    3. Holding a tennis ball in each hand between your thumb and forefinger, rest your hands behind your head so the tennis balls are on either side of the base of your skull.
    4. Alternate between shaking your head from side to side, then tucking and lifting your chin.

    3. If PMS is making your lower back hurt:

This will relieve tension in your neck and head often caused by crappy posture — like when you crane your neck while texting or push your head forward when slumping at a desk.

    4. Alternate between shaking your head from side to side, then tucking and lifting your chin.

    3. If PMS is making your lower back hurt:

This will help the tenderness and pain you get in your lower back before and during your period due to inflammation.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. Lie on your back with your legs bent and feet firmly planted on the ground.
    2. Place two tennis balls under your lower back around where your sacrum — the large, triangular bone at the base of the spine — meets your hip bone.
    3. Raise and lower your hips, kneading the area with the tennis balls.

    4. If you have a tight, painful jaw in the morning:

Clenching when you’re stressed can give you a headache and a sore jaw. Do this right when you wake up or when you’re feeling anxious.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. Using the pads of your fingertips, press up under your cheekbones, starting at the apples of your cheeks.
    2. Open and close your mouth as you press up into your cheekbones.
    3. Do this all the way back, following an imaginary beard line.
    4. When you reach your sideburns, press your thumb under your jawbone and pull your fingertips down the side of your face.
    5. Repeat movement along your jaw, moving toward your chin.
    6. Finally, grab chin and pull the skin down between your thumbs and fingertips.

    5. If your knees get sore from sitting at a desk all day:

    5. If your knees get sore from sitting at a desk all day:

This will work out the bound connective tissue fibers called fascia — aka what you probably think of as knots — that form when your legs are bent for too long.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. While sitting, unbend your leg and let it rest so the muscles in your quad are soft.
    2. Press into where it hurts with a fingertip or a knuckle and massage in a star shape for 10 seconds.
    3. Bend and straighten your knee twice.
    4. Repeat 2–3 times for each place it hurts.

    6. If your butt is sore from all that sitting:

Or if you just want to massage your butt because it feels good.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. Sit on the ground with your legs bent, your hands resting on the ground behind you, and a tennis ball under your butt cheek.
    2. Lift your leg off the ground and roll around on the ball, working into the places you feel most tension.
    3. Repeat on your other side.

    7. If your forearms are sore:

This move feels good pain or no pain, but if you work with your hands a lot, whether typing all day at a computer or doing manual labor, it’s a lifesaver.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. Hold your arm out, palm up, and cup it just under the elbow with your opposite hand.
    2. Flip your arm within you grip so your palm faces the ground.
    3. Repeat all down your arm until you reach your wrist.
Don’t squeeze too hard. Per Silbar: “We’re just taking the casing of a sausage and twisting. We’re not squeezing the meat out of it.”

    8. If your legs and knees hurt after walking, running, or scaling stairs:

If you’re on the move a lot, you probably experience tightness in your IT band, the tissue that runs from the side of your hip all of the way down past your knee. Instead of rolling directly on your side, which can be painful, come at it from an angle instead.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. Lie on your side with your foam roller under your hip.
    2. Using your hands to brace you, slowly roll down from your hip to your knee, rotating your body toward the ground as you go.
    3. Roll back into the starting position.

    9. If your neck and shoulders hurt:

Attempting to give yourself a neck or shoulder massage with your hands actually leads to more tension, even if it feels good at the time. Try this instead.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. Stand with a tennis ball between the wall and your shoulder.
    2. Raise your arm above your head and shift your head from side to side.
    3. Experiment with the ball in different positions along your neck and shoulders.

    10. If you ache from slouching in front of your computer:

You should feel this in your mid-back, where your muscles pull tight and get sore when you slouch.
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. Lie face up with feet shoulder-width apart and flat on the floor.
    2. Center the foam roller on your mid-back, beneath your shoulder blades so it’s perpendicular to your body.
    3. Rock your body toward and away from your feet over the foam roller.

    11. If you just want a head massage that feels so. good.

This is great for headaches, but it also just feels good. A good head and scalp massage is pretty much the best part of going to the hairdresser, you know?
    Here’s how to do it:
    1. Draw circles with your fingertips at your temples, increasing the size and pressure of your circles as you move toward your scalp.
