Flu Shot Facts & Side Effects!

By

The seasonal flu shot is a yearly vaccine administered to protect against the flu, or influenza.
In the United States, flu shots are recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The flu can be a very serious illness, especially in young children, adults ages 65 and over, those with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women.
The flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and family from the flu, the CDC says.
Strains of the flu virus are constantly changing, so a new flu vaccine is made each year. Scientists make the vaccine before flu season starts by predicting which flu strains are likely to be the most common during the upcoming season.
"Since the flu virus frequently drifts in its genetic composition, you have to reformate the vaccine, and this is one of the reason that people have to [get a flu shot] on an annual basis," said Dr. William Schaffner, a preventive medicine and infectious disease expert at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Flu shots protect against three or four strains of flu virus. Trivalent flu vaccines protect against two influenza A strains, H1N1 and H3N2, and one influenza B strain. Quadrivalent flu vaccines — offered for the first time in the 2013-2014 flu season — protect against the same strains as the trivalent vaccine, as well as an extra influenza B virus.
In addition to the standard dose flu vaccine given with a needle, flu shots are available in several different forms, including a high-dose version for those ages 65 and older, a small-needle version (intradermal flu vaccine) for people ages 18 to 64, an egg-free version that's grown in animal cells rather than hen's eggs and is approved for people ages 4 and older, and a nasal spray, which is approved for healthy people ages 2 to 49.
There is also a needle-free flu shot, delivered by a so-called jet injector, which uses a high-pressure stream of fluid to inject the vaccine, the CDC says. It is approved for adults ages 18 to 64.
During the 2016 to 2017 flu season, it's projected that between 157 million and 168 million doses of injectable flu vaccine will be available, according to the CDC.
This season, the flu nasal spray is not recommended for anyone. This decision was based on new data showing that the nasal spray was not very effective at preventing flu from 2013 to 2016, the CDC says. It's not clear whether this recommendation will change in future seasons.

There are also new recommendations for flu shots in people with egg allergies. Previously, the CDC had recommended that people with egg allergies be observed for 30 minutes after receiving a flu shot, but this is no longer recommended. People who have experienced hives as their only allergic reaction to eggs can get any flu vaccine that is licensed for their age group and health status, the CDC says. People who've had severe allergic reaction to eggs, including angioedema (swelling of the skin) and difficulty breathing, can also receive any flu vaccine that is licensed for their age group and health status. However, for these people, the vaccine should be adminstered in a medical setting (such as a hospital, clinic or doctor's office), and it should be given by a health care provider who can recognize and manage severe allergic conditions.

Flu shots made using egg-based technology can contain small amounts of egg protein, but studies have found that allergic reactions from flu shots in people with egg allergies are unlikely. The rate of anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) after all flu vaccines is about 1 case per one million vaccine doses given, the CDC says.
Exactly when flu season starts and ends is unpredictable, so health officials recommend that people get their flu shot in early fall, preferably by the end of October, the CDC says. Flu activity typically peaks in January or February.
"We'd like to get as many people protected against influenza before influenza becomes active in communities across the country," Schaffner said.
Most flu vaccine is given before Thanksgiving, Schaffner said, but people can still get their shot throughout the winter months. Each season's flu shot expires in June of that year, but Schaffner said that he would consider it "too late" to get a flu vaccine after March, unless a person is traveling to the Southern Hemisphere (where their flu season will be starting).
After vaccination, it takes a person about two weeks to build up immunity against the flu.
People can visit the CDC's HealthMap Vaccine Finder to find flu shot locations, although they should call the location ahead of time to see if they have the vaccine in stock.
The effectiveness of the seasonal flu vaccine depends upon several factors, including how well the flu strains in the vaccine match the strains in circulation. Some studies show that when strains in the vaccine are a good match with the ones that are circulating, vaccinated individuals are 60 percent less likely to catch the flu than people who aren't vaccinated, according to the CDC.
Flu vaccine effectiveness can also vary depending on the person being vaccinated — the vaccine tends to work best in healthy adults and older children, and less well in older adults.
For instance, a 2013 study from the CDC found that that year's flu vaccine was not very effective in adults ages 65 and over: Older people who got the vaccine were just as likely to visit the doctor for flu symptoms as those who did not get the vaccine.
But other studies suggest that individuals who do get sick develop less serve symptoms if they are vaccinated. A 2013 study published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases found that people who got the flu shot were less likely to be hospitalized with the flu.
There are some studies that suggest the high dose flu vaccine provides better protection in older adults. The high dose flu vaccine contains four times the dose of the standard vaccine, Schaffner said. A 2014 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the high dose vaccine provides 24 percent more protection against flu than the standard dose, Schaffner said.
Yes. Studies show flu vaccines are safe for women in any stage of pregnancy, the CDC says.
There are several reasons why it's important for pregnant women to get a flu shot, Schaffner said.
"Pregnant women, when they get influenza, have a tendency to get more severe disease," and are at increased risk for complications and hospitalization from the disease, Schaffner said.
In addition, flu vaccination in pregnancy helps to protect the baby against flu during the first six months of life, when the baby is too young to receive a flu shot, Schaffner said. The mother "passes that protection on to her newborn baby," Schaffner said.
According to the CDC, mild side effects from the flu shot include soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, low-grade fever, and aches. Only about 1 percent to 2 percent of people who get a flu shot will have fever as a side effect, Schaffner said.
Rare but serious side effects can occur, including allergic reactions. Symptoms of serious side effects include difficulty breathing, swelling around the eyes or lips, hives, racing heart, dizziness and high fever. If you experience serious side effects, you should seek medical care immediately, the CDC says.
For children, side effects from the flu nasal spray can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, vomiting, muscle aches and fever. For adults, side effects include runny nose, headache, sore throat and cough. These side effects last a short time compared to the actual flu illness, the CDC says.
"It’s a myth that you can get flu from the flu vaccine," Schaffner said.
The viruses in the flu shot are killed, so people cannot get the flu from a flu vaccine. However, because it takes about two weeks for people to build up immunity after they get the flu vaccine, some people may catch the flu shortly after their vaccinated, if they are exposed to the flu during this time period.
Some people may also mistakenly attribute symptoms of a cold to the vaccine, Schaffner said.
The nasal spray vaccine contains a "live attenuated" flu virus, but the virus is weakened so that it cannot cause the flu. The viruses in the nasal spray can't replicate in the warm temperatures of the lungs and other parts in the body. However, because temperatures in the nose are colder, the virus causes a small infection in the nose. This infection does not cause symptoms in most people, but in some people, it causes symptoms such as runny nose and sore throat, Schaffner said.
This local infection will prompt the body to make antibodies against the flu virus, Schaffner said. "That provides better protection against the real flu, which is of course, is a virus that can make you seriously ill," Schaffner said.
Children younger than 6 months cannot get a flu shot. Those who've had a severe allergic reaction to a flu vaccine in the past should generally not be vaccinated, the CDC says.
You should not get the flu vaccine if you have a high fever (You should wait until the fever is gone.)
However, if you have minor illness, like a mild cold or a headache, you can still get a flu shot, Schaffner said. "The vaccine does perfectly well in those folks."

This Juice Unclogs Arteries & Protects Against Heart Disease!

The latest scientific research has revealed that a single food can boost health, reduce the risk of developing a heart disease, and even reverse heart issues in patients.
The results were published in the journal Atherosclerosis, and researchers say that pomegranate extract has the capacity to prevent and reverse heart disease which involves thickening of the coronary arteries, usually triggered by fatty deposits.
According to researchers, pomegranate has numerous “powers,” including:
  • Reduces plaque buildups in arteries
  • Prevents oxidative stress
  • Stops chemokine, a chemical messenger connected with the inflammation in the arteries
  • Reduces the accumulation of lipids in the heart muscle
  • Prevents cardiac enlargement
  • Prevents ECG abnormalities
There are other studies based on this theory. In 2004, Clinical Nutrition presented the results of a three-year clinical trial that confirmed the connection between pomegranate juice and reversed carotid artery stenosis.
Regular consumption of this juice reverses carotid artery stenosis by astonishing 29% within a year!
Statins that lower cholesterol levels harm health, and pomegranate juice may be the most powerful natural alternative. So, you can actually unclog your arteries, and prevent the development of heart disease by consuming fresh pomegranate juice.
We give you a few good reasons to drink this juice more often:
  1. Pomegranates are packed with essential nutrients
A cup of pomegranate seeds contains 144 calories, 7 grams of fiber, 3 grams of protein, vitamins C and K, folate, and potassium. Pomegranates offer strong antioxidant power which prevents damage caused by free radicals.
  1. Pomegranates offer two strong plant compounds
Punicalagins are concentrated in the juice and the peel of this fruit. Punicic acid is a found in pomegranate seeds. These two give pomegranates their super-power.
  1. Anti-inflammatory potential
Eat more pomegranates to reduce inflammation, and prevent heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and obesity.

Make these 10 small changes to your day – here’s what happens to belly fat

People like to overcomplicate weight loss. They think they need some magical exercise program that involves triple clap pushups, reverse planche or one-legged burpees.
Others believe they need to hire a personal trainer who looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his best days or count their macro nutrients gram by gram. This is not true.
Many people think they need to change absolutely everything in their life and completely transform their daily routine if they want to achieve weight loss, better health, and more energy. But in reality, small tweaks to your diet and lifestyle can make a huge difference.

10 Small Daily Tweaks For Big Weight Loss Results

Try some of these painless little fixes and see how a few small changes can create a big result for you!

1. Replace Sugar with Stevia

This important step will help you avoid blood sugar crashes that lead to tiredness and cravings for unhealthy foods.
Some people opt for stevia instead of sugar because of the lower calorie count. But it’s not about the calories! One teaspoon of sugar contains only about 16 calories.
The reason it should be avoided is that concentrated sugar spikes your blood sugar levels, followed by a sugar low later. This robs you of energy, makes you crave unhealthy foods and not feel your best.
Stevia is a natural sweetener that contains an abundance of nutrients, including vitamin C, beta-carotene, niacin, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium and iron.
I’d like to note that stevia has a distinct flavor that not everyone might love at first. When I first started using it, I wasn’t too crazy about it, but I must say the taste grows on you. You’ll get used to it, and later if you try anything with regular sugar in it, you’ll feel the flavor is too acidic and unpleasant.
Some studies have shown that stevia may help improve insulin sensitivity and, therefore, is suitable for people who have type 2 diabetes and anyone who want to balance their blood sugar levels.
Use stevia instead of sugar in your tea, coffee or other sweetened drinks. Use a combination of stevia and sweet fruit, like fresh dates or ripe bananas, to sweeten your desserts. Fruit contains fiber and other nutrients that slow down sugar absorption into the bloodstream, so it doesn’t spike blood sugar levels as concentrated sweeteners do.

2. Include Tabata Training

Have you ever said you don’t have time for exercise? Yes, you might not be able to spend two hours in the gym five days per week, but I can almost guarantee that you can spare 12 minutes per week for working out!
Yes, only 12 minutes. This means three Tabata sessions per week.
Tabata is a type of high-intensity interval training that takes only 4 minutes per session. Intervals are quick, 20-second bouts of heavy exertion (to the point where your breathing is very labored), followed by 10 seconds of rest – repeating the cycle a total of 8 times.
Whether you jump rope, ride your bike or do other cardio, studies have shown that the Tabata protocol seems to help your body continue to burn calories long after you finish your workout.

3. Start Your Morning with Fiber and Nutrient-Rich Green Drink

More than two-thirds of adults are either overweight or obese in the US, yet many are not getting enough nutrients with their food. Eating overly processed, nutrient-poor food might satisfy the body’s calorific needs.
However, the body needs to get enough vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber and other nutrients that only whole natural foods can provide. If your body lacks nutrients, it might make you hungry forcing you to overeat.
Therefore, it’s important to include fiber and nutrient rich foods in your diet. One of the best ways to do it is to start your day with super nourishing and filling green smoothie.
To make a simple green smoothie, add some sweet fruit like bananas, some berries or raw cacao, dark leafy greens like kale or spinach, water or almond milk to your blender and blend well. You can add some additional superfoods like spirulina, chlorella, turmeric, maca or wheatgrass powder to boost the nutrient value of your morning drink.
Leafy greens and fruit are high in fiber and nutrients, thus will keep you full and nourished. If you get hungry quickly after having your smoothie, it means you’re not drinking enough! Add more bananas and other ingredients to your smoothie.

4. Get Up and Move Every 30 Minutes

Metabolism slows down¹ if you stay in a fixed position for 30 minutes. Set the alarm on your Outlook or your phone to remind you to get up and away from your desk every half an hour.
Do some stretching, walk around the office, roll your shoulders back and forth, or simply stand up and move while talking on the phone. The movement also helps balance blood sugar levels, improves the circulation and gets your oxygen flowing.

5. Sauté Vegetables in Water

Just as avoiding refined sugar is important, so is avoiding unhealthy trans fats found in fried and processed foods, margarine and shortening and anything with “partially hydrogenated” fats. You should also avoid saturated animal fats. Although there has been a lot of controversy about them lately, the evidence² suggest that they might not be safe for your health.
Canola, vegetable, soybean and corn oils are marketed as “heart healthy” oil choices for cooking and baking. However, they mainly contain PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids), which oxidize when heated and become rancid. Rancid oils are toxic³ and cause inflammation in the body.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services and American Heart Association, chronic inflammation might cause diseases such as atherosclerosis, arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, food intolerances, diabetes, fibromyalgia, heart disease and in some cases even cancer. It also accelerates the aging process.
Simply sauté your veggies with water! You can also steam them or bake in the oven using a little bit of water instead of oil.
Once your food is cooked, you can then add healthy fats to your meal in the form of avocado, raw nuts, and seeds or a little drizzle of cold-pressed unrefined oil, e.g. coconut, olive or avocado oil.

6. Replace Bread and Other Baked Goods with Vegetables

Refined flour found in bread and other baked goods gets converted into sugar in your bloodstream pretty rapidly. Just as refined sugar, it causes blood sugar highs and lows, which in the long term might lead to excess weight gain, insulin resistance and even type 2 diabetes.
There’s something about bread that keeps a lot of people addicted, whether it’s gluten, bread’s crispy texture or the sugar rush effect it has on the body. Many people find it difficult to have a small piece of bread. Therefore it’s best to avoid it altogether and replace it with healthier options.
Another reason why you might consider avoiding bread and other flour products is that a diet of refined foods leaves your body malnourished, constipated, enervated and vulnerable to chronic illness.
Simply replace your bread, pasta or other baked goods to veggies like pumpkin, sweet potato, broccoli, beets, carrots, zucchini, etc.
You can bake, steam, sauté or boil them. When prepared well, veggies are absolutely delicious and will leave you nourished and satisfied.

7. Go For a Walk Immediately After a Meal

Walking immediately after a meal will help you balance blood sugar levels. As you already know, stable blood sugar levels are vital for maintaining a healthy weight, feeling energized and avoiding cravings.
After you finish your lunch or dinner, go for a brisk, 30-minute walk. Because walking is a low impact form of exercise, it shouldn’t cause any digestive distress.
Studies show that even low impact exercise might prevent metabolic syndrome and its drawbacks on your health.
Another great way to improve your health and burn extra calories is to “force” yourself to walk by parking your car a block away or getting off the bus or train a stop earlier. Also, don’t forget an opportunity to take the stairs instead of an elevator! This might not seem like much, but all extra movement adds up and makes you healthier and slimmer!

8. Replace Dairy or Store-Bought Plant Milk to Homemade Plant Milk

The dangers of dairy to one’s health are pretty widely known nowadays, and many people are turning to plant-based milk. However, store-bought plant-based milk is often very processed and contain many additives like refined sugar, oils, carrageenan, flavorings, and preservatives.
It’s very easy to make your own plant-based milk! You can find a simple step by step recipe here.

9. Have Vegetable Soup For Dinner

Consuming soup can enhance satiety and reduce energy intake. Due to their high water content, liquid foods, like soup, make you feel fuller and satiated.
In a study when the soup was consumed, participants reduced meal energy intake by 20%. Moreover, vegetable soup is full of minerals, vitamins, and fiber, which keep your body nourished and functioning well.

10. Practice Sensual, Distraction-Free Eating

When you eat while watching TV or a YouTube video, scrolling Facebook or checking your phone, you’re not fully present.
We’re sensual beings and eat with all our senses: taste, sight, smell, touch and even hearing (think crunchy food)! When you’re distracted during your meal, you might fill your belly and get all the calories you need, but your brain does not register the full eating experience.
Thus even if you’re full, you’re not completely satisfied and might find yourself marching to a fridge or cupboard for snacks after dinner.
When we’re distracted, we’re unaware of the food decisions we make. Practicing mindful eating might help you make healthier choices, eat the appropriate portions for your body size and feel more satisfied with your meals.
Make your meal a beautiful ritual and experience: serve your food in beautiful plates, light up some candles (at least for dinner), switch off your gadgets, eat slowly and savor every single bite! Mindful eating can result in significant changes in weight and eating behavior.

Make this simple cough drop with coconut oil, honey and cinnamon the moment you get a sore throat!

With winter here, the season not only brings lots of joy with the holidays, but often a number of illnesses like the flu, colds, and coughs.
While most people reach for store-bought throat lozenges to ease a cough, those often come with a number of unwanted, and potentially harmful ingredients like artificial colors and preservatives. It’s not a good idea to ingest those toxins at any time, but it’s even worse when you’re sick.

The good news is that it’s easy to make your own cough drops right at home, using just a few ingredients that are 100% safe, allowing you to treat that cough naturally, and in a more satisfying way. While it may seem unlikely, there are proven reasons behind each one of the ingredients that when combined, make this recipe extremely effective.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil not only helps to soothe a sore throat and halt a cough, but it also helps to strengthen the immune system at the same time. It’s loaded with antioxidants and offers both antibacterial and antiviral properties.
It has a high level of lauric acid, a healthy fatty acid, that is known to fight bacteria and even create a hostile environment for viruses, which helps to support the immune system.
Coconut is actually comprised of 50 percent lauric acid, which the body converts to monolaurin, an antiviral agent that can fight off all sorts of viruses and pathogens, including HIV, herpes, influenza and harmful protozoa like Giardia lamblia.
Because coconut oil boosts the immune system, it may even help reduce the length of illness too.

Honey

Honey offers especially powerful antimicrobial and antiviral properties. In fact, its famous for its ability to naturally cure a cold and cough. In fact, scientific studies have found that honey can be just as effective for treating a cough as an over-the-counter cough medicine.
Researchers believe that it may be due in part to honey’s thick consistency, which helps to coat the throat, as well as its ability to trigger nerve endings to protect one from an unrelenting cough.
If you have a cough related to allergies, be sure to use raw honey, ideally produced locally, as it can be even more effective. That’s because the pollens that are most common to a particular area are present in honey purchased locally.
When flying from one flower to the next, the bees become covered with pollen spores, and those spores are transferred to the honey they produce. Consuming it then helps one build up immunity to what’s encountered in that environment.
A 2010 study showed that those who had been diagnosed with a birch pollen allergy were able to reduce 60 percent of their allergy symptoms as well as decrease days with severe symptoms by 70 percent by consuming the honey during birch pollen season.
The honey in this recipe not only serves as the binding ingredient to hold the cough drops together, but it also offers a sweet flavor that makes them taste great too.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon not only has an excellent taste and aroma, but this powerful spice has also been used medicinally across the globe for thousands of years. Those health benefits are derived from the bark of the Cinnamomum tree which contains a number of compounds like cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, and cinnamate that are responsible for its health promoting abilities.
Cinnamon also offers special phenolic properties, including antioxidants and flavonoids. In fact, researchers have discovered that there are over 40 different protective compounds in this spice – which all come together to help strengthen the immune system. The oils in cinnamon can even protect against a variety of bacteria that can lead to health issues, including a cold or the flu.
Cinnamon also helps allergy sufferers as it lowers inflammation while fighting histamine reactions.

Homemade 3-Ingredient Cough Drops

These three ingredients all come together to help you create your own homemade cough drops in the recipe below.

Ingredients:

Supplies:

  • Small ice cube tray
  • Container for storing

Instructions:

  1. Gather all ingredients and the small ice cube tray.

Pepsi And Coca-Cola Used As Pesticide In India!

Alok Prasad Putul writes that “Farmers in India have been using Pepsi and Coca–Cola as a cheaper alternative to pesticides.”  Therefore, besides being a poison to the human body, these drinks are also used in other ways around the world.
The Center for Science and Environment (CSE) , which is one of India’s leading voluntary agencies, claims that the soft drinks produced in India,  including those with the brand names Pepsi and Coca-Cola, contain extremely high levels of pesticide residues, and due to this, farmers use them to fight pests as they are cheaper than the conventional pesticides.
In the third countries, it is cheaper to buy Coke than to find clean water. This drink has been tested due to its cleaning effects, and it has been found to be quite effective in cleaning oil stains, tile grout and even strip paint off the cabinets.
In 2003, the CSE analyzed samples from 12 major soft drink manufacturers and discovered that all of them had residues of 4 extremely toxic pesticides and insecticides, lindane, DDT, malathion and chlorpyrifos.

Sunita Narain, the director of the CSE, reported the following at a press conference:
“In all the samples tested, the levels of pesticide residue far exceeded the maximum permissible total pesticide limit of 0.0005 mg per liter in water used as food, set down by the European Economic Commission (EEC).”
CDS scientists have reported that regarding the EEC limits, the chlorpyrifos level was 42 times higher, the residues of malathion were 87 times higher, and the levels of lindane-, which is banned in the United States-were21 times higher. Moreover, the stated that the toxins were able to lead to long-term cancer, birth defects, damage to the nervous and reproductive systems, and severe disruption of the immune system.

The CSE findings have shown that the Coca-Cola and Pepsi samples had almost similar concentrations of pesticide residues: namely, the contaminants in Pepsi samples were 37 times higher than the EEC norms, Coca-Cola exceeded the norms by 45 times.
These findings were soon negated by the chiefs of the Indian subsidiaries of Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
Sanjeev Gupta, president of Coca-Cola India, maintained that these revelations by CSE were “unfair” and his company was being subjected to a “trial by media”.

The companies disagree that their products are used instead of pesticides, as they do not contain anything which might control pests.
However, farmers in the Durg, Rajnandgaon and Dhamtari districts of Chhattisgarh claim that they used Pepsi and Coke to fight pests on their rice plantations.
This usage of the drinks significantly increased their sales in remote villages. One liter of the three most popular pesticides in India, Avant, Tracer and Nuvocron costs around 10,000 rupees (£120). On the other hand, one-and-a-half liters of locally made Coca-Cola cost only 30 rupees.
Therefore, if a farmer mixes a bottle of Pepsi or Coke with water and sprays it on the crop, it would cost 55-60 rupees less per acre. Yet, the effects of this technique are still not proven!

According to the agricultural specialist, Devendra Sharma, farmers are mistaken in believing that these drinks and pesticides are the same, as these drinks are sugar syrups and which attract red ants when poured on crops, which in turn feed on the larva of insects.
Also, allegedly, not only these drinks were used for this purpose. Other cola soft drinks and locally produced beverages worked as well, and farmers claim that Pepsi, Thumbs Up, and other local soft drinks are also effective.
The main ingredients all colas have in common are water and sugar, but some manufacturers also add citric and phosphoric acids.
Mr. Sharma claims that the practice of using sugar syrup on pests is old:
“Jaggery made from sugar cane has been used commonly for pest control on many occasions. Pepsi and Coca-Cola are being used to achieve the same result. Farmers have traditionally used sugary solutions to attract red ants to feed on insect larvae. I think the colas are also performing the same role.”
On the other hand, this is defined differently by his fellow scientist, Sanket Thakur:
“All that is happening is that plants get a direct supply of carbohydrates and sugar which in turn boosts the plants’ immunity and the plantation on the whole ends up yielding a better crop.”
Coke in America is rich in high fructose corn syrup which might serve as an effective pesticide since it is a concentrated cocktail of the simple sugars fructose and glucose.
Yet, the Pepsi sales manager at the time in Chhattisgarh,  Anupam Verma, claims that even though the sales figures in rural areas of the state increased by 20%, this is not the reason for it.
“If there was any truth in these claims then we would rather be selling our product as a pesticide rather than soft drinks. There is more money in selling pesticides than in selling soft drinks. Their claim smacks of lies. At best it is idle matter.”
CSE scientists H. B. Mathur and Sapna Johnson claimed that their basic inference was that the manufacturers of the soft drinks were drawing their water supplies from groundwater, which is greatly contaminated by years of indiscriminate use of various pesticides.
A study conducted by the government’s Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)  found high pesticide residues in the groundwater around Delhi, as well as traces of lead, cadmium, and chromium, excessive salinity, and nitrate and fluoride content.

Moreover, the samples of popular soft drinks which were tested in the CSE laboratories were found to have no pesticides, even though over 95% of them are made with municipal water supplies which contain the same toxins and pharmaceuticals in our drinking water, such as: estrone, fluoride, sulfamethoxazole, arsenic, atrazine, chlorine, atenolol, trimethoprim carbamazepine, and gemfibrozil.
In comparison to the one of the bottled water industry, the CSE found that the regulations for the powerful and massive soft drinks industry are much weaker, and do not regulate the cold drink quality properly.

In the end, even though we are perfectly aware of the fact that cola used as a pesticide is not completely organic or natural, it is definitely safer that other conventional pesticides!

The Truth About Menopause!

Menopausal or premenstrual symptoms wreaking havoc with your life? It might not be “just hormones.”

Prior to the 1950s, women looked forward to menopause, as it typically signaled a time of increased energy, heightened libido, and a slowing of the aging process. Starting around 1950, however, the first signs of ‘mystery illness’ began to appear, sending women to their doctors in droves, complaining of symptoms that hardly existed before, including night sweats, hot flashes, fatigue, weight gain, digestive trouble, headaches, irritability, depression, anxiety, forgetfulness, insomnia, and more. Initially doctors dismissed these complaints, telling women that it was “all in their head,” that they were just bored and seeking attention, and they should join the PTA. The push-back from women was fierce, and eventually doctors were forced to acknowledge the situation. Hormones became the scapegoat, with these previously unseen symptoms being attributed to hormonal imbalances and/or deficiencies.

Because all the blame was placed on hormones, it seemed logical that menopausal women should take prescription hormones to “correct” the imbalances. Thus, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was born. After research linking HRT to increased risk of breast cancer, heart attacks, and strokes came to light, bioidentical HRT (i.e., hormones chemically identical to those produced in the body) came into the mix. While some women experienced relief via these treatments, it was often temporary, and/or small in scope. Nonetheless, “hormonal imbalance” is still considered the chief culprit of menopausal symptoms. This might make more sense if so-called menopausal symptoms only affected middle-aged women, but these days, women of all ages experience many of the same issues that previously only affected women in their 40s and 50s. The prevalence of the same suffering in younger and younger women paints a bigger picture than just hormone problems.

There are additional factors that can lead to the symptoms attributed to menopause. Around the same time that women first began experiencing these symptoms, three other phenomena were also at play. First, people in the US were experiencing increased radiation exposure due to fallout from the World War II bombings in Japan. At the same time, there was an explosion of DDT (i.e., pesticide) exposure. In the 1940s, DDT was used everywhere: on crops and food, in parks, and people even sprayed it on their own gardens. By 1950, DDT use was at its height, and the central nervous systems and livers of countless women had become overloaded with the toxin. The third factor was Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The first generation of women complaining of menopausal symptoms had been born in the early 1900s, just as EBV was beginning to encroach upon the population. EBV typically enters a woman when she is young, then spends decades building itself up to the point where symptoms emerge. So if a woman was born in 1905 and had contracted EBV as a child, by 1950 she would begin to experience symptoms of this viral infection. In other words, the fact that symptoms manifested around the age of menopause was a coincidence. Today, rather than waiting several decades to strike until a woman is in her 40s or 50s, some viral strains and toxic loads are now affecting women in their 30s, 20s, and even in their teens.

This is not to say that hormones can’t go off balance. When they do, the culprit is often overworked adrenal glands (i.e., adrenal fatigue) and/or underactive thyroid, which can throw reproductive hormones off-kilter at any age. The point, however, is that hormone imbalance may only be one piece of the puzzle. The good news is that all of these things—radiation, viruses, toxic load, and reproductive hormone issues—can be addressed with healing foods that tackle a wide range of pathogens and toxins that could be contributing to your symptoms. Foods and herbs to focus on are those that boost immune function and support the reproductive system, including:

• wild blueberries
• sesame tahini
• avocados
• black beans
• asparagus
• apples
• spinach
• black grapes
• cucumbers
• raspberry leaf
• nettle leaf
• chastetree berry
• elderberry

These foods represent a simple yet powerful way to address your “alleged” menopausal or PMS symptoms. They provide antioxidants and other nutrients that help fortify vital organs and reduce hot flashes. They also quench inflammation and help keep reproductive hormones balanced.

Above all, keep in mind that menopause is a normal part of life, and is not meant to be a difficult process. By nourishing your body with healing foods, and addressing the true underlying causes of your symptoms, you can return to living a healthy life and embracing life at every stage.

The Cause Of Bad Breath & How To Effectively Clean Your Mouth!

Here is yet another daily practice to add into your oral health regime. Fortunately for you, this one is not only simple and fast, taking only a few seconds out of your day, but it offers benefits that can be seen right away. I am referring to the Ayurvedic practice of tongue scraping, which involves — you guessed it — scraping your tongue.
Scraping your tongue may sound uncomfortable or even painful, but I assure you, once you try it and see all of the gunk that comes off of your tongue (painlessly), you will immediately choose to add this practice to your morning routine. I’d never heard of it until about a month ago when a friend mentioned it to me while I was on vacation. I ordered a scraper online as soon as I got home and have been using it religiously ever since.
Registered dental hygienist Kim Shamoun says: “I can’t live without tongue scraping. Without a doubt, it should be a part of our daily oral hygiene regimen. I stress to my patients, friends, family and strangers alike how important it really is. A tongue scraper is the one thing I would want with me on a deserted island… forget the lipstick!”

The Benefits of Tongue Scraping

1. Combats Bad Breath and Halitosis
In fact, tongue scraping is the single most beneficial defence against halitosis. Regardless of whether your breath is regularly stinky, I’d be willing to bet that you still wake up with morning breath. How nice would it be to roll over and give your significant other, or pet, a big smooch without them gagging and pushing you away? (Okay, maybe it’s not that bad, but it’s still an unfortunate morning reality!)
2. Enhances Taste Receptors
When your tongue is coated with gunk, that gunk is preventing your taste buds from recognizing all of the amazing flavours your food has to offer. Experience your food as if it were for the first time again with the simple practice of tongue scraping!
3. Improves Digestion
We’ve all heard how digestion begins in your mouth, and how important it is to chew your food, but your saliva is just as important here, and the more saliva you produce, the easier the digestive process will be. Tongue scraping will cause you to salivate more because you will be able to taste your food more.
4. Protects From Plaque Buildup
You might be surprised to learn that plaque exists on the tongue as well on your teeth — this is called soft plaque. The more plaque you have on your tongue, the more plaque will develop on your teeth.
5. Improves Overall Oral Hygiene
Having a clean tongue and overall good oral hygiene can help protect against other diseases as well. Oral health is very important for overall health, and poor oral hygiene is linked to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and infertility.

I Know What You’re Thinking…

You’re probably thinking, I already scrape my tongue, every time I brush my teeth, with my toothbrush! Well, you definitely have the right idea, but unfortunately you are using the wrong tool for the job. A toothbrush just does not provide the same scraping benefit as a tongue scraper. Toothbrush —for brushing teeth. Tongue scraper — for scraping the tongue. See what I did there? You will need a hard, flat surface for optimal scraping.

How to Scrape Your Tongue

First you want to pick your scraper. Personally, I have been unable to find them in stores, so I went online and ordered one from Amazon. They range from $7-$15, and come in either stainless steel or copper. Copper is likely the best metal to be used for tongue scraping because, as with our gut, the mouth harbours both good and bad bacteria, and copper is toxic to the bad while also providing important enzymes necessary for the healthy microbes in the mouth to survive.

In either case, I recommend getting one with handles for better grip in case the gunk slides onto the handles.

One you’ve brought your scraper home, follow these steps:

1. In the morning, right after you wake up and before drinking any water, get up and scrape your tongue. This will reduce the accumulation of toxins in your digestive tract from your tongue. You don’t want to press too hard, but press hard enough so you can see what looks like mucus sliding off your tongue. Rinse the scraper after each scrape and then repeat the process about 5-7 times, starting at the back of your tongue.
2. Follow with flossing, then brushing
3. Finish with a large glass of water.

You can also use your scraper in the same order during your evening brushing routine. Your mouth will start to feel much fresher and cleaner right away, and you’ll wonder how you ever went to so long without scraping your tongue before.

12 bad habits that drain your energy and how to quit them!

Being carefree, joyful, and full of life isn’t about your age, credit score, or the number of likes your posts get on Instagram. If you feel drained and burned out, maybe you’ve slipped into some of these common bad habits that undermine your life satisfaction and suck up all your energy, leaving you tired and worn out. Luckily, you can always take a good hard look at yourself, and make changes to improve your energy levels every day.

Here are the Top 12 bad habits that many people have that end up draining their energy (both spiritually and physically).

1. Be a lone wolf

Mental health professionals know social isolation can be as damaging to health as smoking cigarettes or obesity. In a study of older adults, researchers found that people who felt lonely or felt like they didn’t have a friend or loved one to rely on had lower quality mental and physical health.1 While some prefer to roll solo, we all need a cheering section sometimes. Invest in your relationships with people who care about your well-being and want to see you succeed.

2. Settle

‘Cognitive dissonance’ is the state of having conflicting beliefs and thoughts about a situation or choice you’ve made. It leads to ongoing mental stress.2 Granted, life isn’t always perfect, and making compromises is a natural and healthy part of moving through life. However, thinking, “This is the best I’ll ever get” or “I don’t deserve any better” is holding you back. Don’t be afraid to make bold decisions and change things that aren’t working.

3. Don’t have boundaries

Too often, we feel bad or guilty for saying “no” when someone asks a favor, invites us to something, or wants to borrow something. Don’t be afraid to answer truthfully. While we all have a few not-so-fun responsibilities, there’s no reason to agree to something you know you’ll be stressing about later.

4. Live beyond your means

We’ve all done it: the paycheck is coming in next week–pull out the credit card and promise to pay it off later. Spending money you don’t have, even if you just don’t have it yet, leads to nagging worry and doubts. Free yourself: let your wallet live in the present, not the future.

5. Hold grudges

Advice columnist Ann Landers wrote, “holding onto resentment is like letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head.” not only rent-free, there’s a utility bill too–your energy. Forgive and forget.

6. Overcommit your time

Always make a little space for yourself in your schedule. Unplug and use the time for naps, meditation, reading, or hobbies. Don’t you get excited just thinking about it?

7. Eat junk food

Eating junk food, especially sugary drinks and treats, releases a hit of dopamine in the brain. That’s the same chemical released when you use drugs, alcohol, or gambling. In other words, it’s highly addictive, making you want more and more.3 Furthermore, the poor nutrition of fast food and packaged, processed products has a significant impact on your energy level. Instead, munch on healthy snacks, and choose water when you can, instead of soda pop or juice. Get rid of it!

 8. Lurk Social media

Increasingly, scientists, parents and therapists see how spending too much time on social media leads to depression, social anxiety, and loneliness in teens and young adults.4 On Facebook and Instagram, everyone presents a polished, perfect life. Our own lives behind the screen seem dull and sad–even as we filter and curate our image to seem perfect and polished to everyone else. Social media is a great tool, but be wary of spending too much time on it. Check out more on the risks of social media.

9. Charge your phone by your bed

No, it’s not because of cell radiation nuking your brain. When it’s late at night and you can’t sleep, the temptation to roll over and check your phone is tough to resist. However, turning to devices when you’re not sleepy may turn your restlessness into insomnia.5 The mental stimulation and bright blue light mess with your circadian rhythms, the body’s sleep clock. A good way to resist the temptation is to dock your phone in another room altogether.

10. Be a couch potato

Remember how junk food releases dopamine into the brain, which feels good and gives you a temporary boost? Well, exercise has been proven to do the same, except it’s good for you! Sometimes known as a ‘runner’s high,’ working out gives a brief chemical boost to the brain.6 Additionally, being fit means your body works more efficiently, meaning your energy lasts longer.

11. Complain

Positive thinking powerfully benefits your mental health and sense of well-being.7 focusing on the negative only drags you down. Let it go and smile!

12. Stagnate

Lastly, sometimes it feels like you’re doing the same thing, day in, day out. We all know the feeling: eat, sleep, work, Netflix, repeat. Break out of the routine and try something new. Travel, even if it’s just to a new restaurant or park. Try new things. Little changes can make you feel a lot more fulfilled.

10 Of The Worst Food Ingredients To Never Eat Again!

Ninety percent of the products we see on grocery store shelves today are loaded with processed and nutrition-less ingredients. The hard truth is that these ingredients are killing us one bite at a time. They are addictive and cunningly sleuth, usually masked by an array of creative but misleading advertising schemes.
However, there’s one amazing fact about our health that many of us forget from time to time. The fact is this- we all have 100% control over what we choose to put into our bodies! It’s a simple and empowering fact that we all need reminding of, and today is that day.
To help you take back your power and regain autonomy over your health, here is a list of the 10 worst food ingredients to never eat again to ensure your body is as toxin free as it should be.

1) Sodium Benzoate

What’s the deal?: A common food preservative that prevents the growth of mold and yeasts. When combined with vitamins C or E, it produces the carcinogen benzene. Sodium benzoate deprives our mitochondria (cellular energy-makers) of oxygen. It has also been linked to hyperactivity in children.
What’s it found in?: Juices, pickles, sodas, pre-made salad dressings, condiments.

2)  BHA & BHT (Butylated hydroxyanisole & butylated hydroxytoluene)

What’s the deal?: A preservative that prevents the breakdown of fats. The National Institute of Health states that BHT/BHA are “reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens.” A natural replacement that does the same job in preserving food would be vitamin E, which you may see more of in the natural food section of your grocery store.
What’s it found in?: Potato chips, lard, butter, cereal, instant mashed potatoes, preserved meat, beer, baked goods, dry beverage and dessert mixes, chewing gum and other foods.

3) MSG (Monosodium glutamate)

What’s the deal?: A flavour enhancer which is known tdamage the appetite regulation center in the area of the brain known as the hypothalamus, causing leptin resistence and thereby eliminating the feeling of being “full.” It’s known as an excitotoxin, a chemical which overstimulates dopamine production, creating a drug-like ‘rush.’ MSG also promotes liver inflammation and dysplasia.
What’s it found in?: Canned and boxed soups, dried soup mixes, frozen prepared meals, canned prepared meals, fast food, junk food, chinese food, stew, chili, canned beans, salad dressing.

4) Artificial Sweeteners

What’s the deal?: Used as a replacement for sugar, artificial sweeteners have recently been found to change the huge colony of bacteria in our intestines to favor the harmful bacteria that increase risk for diabetes and obesity.  A study also found that women drinking two diet sodas per day are 50 percent more likely to die from heart-related disease.
What’s it found in?: Low-calorie yogurts, flavoured water, juices, gum, diet sodas, snack foods. (Common artificial sweeteners: ACESULFAME POTASSIUM, ASPARTAME, GLYCEROL, HSH, ISOMALT, LACTITOL, MALTITOL,
POLYDEXTROSE, SACCHARIN, SORBITOL, SUCRALOSE)

5) Potassium Bromate

What’s the deal?: A food additive used in bread-making to soften and bleach the dough. Potassium bromate is banned in countries such as Canada, Brazil, and China because of it’s carcinogenic properties. It is particularly known to induce renal and thyroid cancer. Although most potassium bromate breaks down during the baking process, tests have confirmed that trace amounts can remain in finished baked goods.
What’s it found in?: Fast-food sandwich buns, pre-made frozen pizzas, popular name brand doughs, processed baked goods.

6) Acrylamide

What’s the deal?: Acrylamide is a carcinogenic chemical that is a by-product of high temperature processing.
What’s it found in?: Foods heated above 120 degrees celsius. Fried foods such as potatoes chips and french fries. Cigarette smoke also contains acrylamide.

7) Sodium Nitrite or Nitrate

What’s the deal?: Salt preservative used primarily in processed meat preservation. Nitrates and Nitrites have been linked to pancreatic cancer in rats.
What’s it found in?: Breakfast sausage, hot dogs, jerkies, bacon, lunch meat and even meats in canned soup products.

8) High Fructose Corn Syrup

What’s the deal?: A processed and refined sugar extracted from corn, known to contribute to diabetes, metabolic syndrome, mercury build-up and more. Americans consume more calories from HFCS than any other source.
What’s it found in?: Sodas, candy, snack bars, concentrated juices, processed cereals, coffee syrups, icing, condiments.

9) Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)

What’s the deal?:  BVO is a food additive that keeps citrus flavoring from separating in sodas and sports drinks. The additive is still legal in the US, even though it’s banned in the European Union, Japan and Australia because it contains bromine, the element found in flame retardants that has been linked to nerve issues. Earlier this year, Fanta, Mountain Dew and Gatorade all announced that they’d remove BVO from their products, but some generic soda brands still use it, so look closely at the ingredient list. (Or better yet, skip the soft drink and enjoy some refreshing water instead.)
What’s it found in?: Sodas and sports drinks.

10) Blue, Green, Red & Yellow

What’s the deal?: The artificial colours blue 1 and 2, green 3, red 3, and yellow 6 have been linked to thyroid, adrenal, bladder, kidney, and brain cancers.
What’s it found in?: Colourful candy, cereal, chocolate bars, Kraft dinner, juices, sports drinks.

A Helpful Tip

One of the best ways to avoid all of these ingredients is to buy 100% organic. Organic food production abides by strict guidelines which ensure our food doesn’t contain harmful chemical additives. Although organic food prices may be higher than non-organic, by purchasing 100% organic you are ensuring a higher quality of life without unnecessary toxins building up in your body, and really, what better investment is there than your own health?
Much love!

The Spin on Aspartame: The Truth We’re Not Being Told!

You surely have heard about Aspartame, and if you google it, you will find tons of info for it, speculation, research findings.
However, we would like to discuss its safety, as we are constantly being told that it is not dangerous and that doctors, medical experts, and the government would inform us in the case of the opposite.
However, apparently, we have been told lies about its safety and the reason is evident- corporate profits.
Aspartame has been initially developed by the pharmaceutical company G.D. Searle, but they could not get it approved by the FDA, as the mice and monkeys involved in the research developed tumors, brain lesions, seizures, and even died.
They persisted in showing that their product was safe, even though they were constantly rejected or 16 years.

Then, the FDA finally asked the Department of Justice to prosecute G.D. Searle for submitting fraudulent test data with the goal to get Aspartame approved. Dr. Adrian Gross, an FDA senior toxicologist, told Congress that “Beyond a shadow of a doubt aspartame triggers brain tumors.”
Moreover, the National Soft Drink Association itself objected Aspartame as unsafe to be included in carbonated beverages as it is very unstable in liquid form and breaks down into, among other things, formaldehyde.
In 1985, G.D. Searle and Co. was purchased by Monsanto and the NutraSweet Company operated as part of Monsanto until 2000, when Monsanto sold it to J.W. Childs Equity Partners.
During this time, the FDA has found 92 symptoms linked to the consumption of aspartame, such as weight gain, deafness, nausea, blindness, dizziness, and even death, and it is still being used!
According to the Aspartame Resource Center, at www.aboutaspartame.com, it is included in over 6,000 products worldwide.

Moreover, this center is, in fact, a public relations and “information” arm of Ajinomoto, one of the biggest producers of aspartame in the world, the other being the NutraSweet Company. (Ajinomoto also produces another known additive, monosodium glutamate, or MSG.)
The site includes information on the safety of aspartame, and even has a section labeled “Meet the doctors,” which lists their “medical advisory board.”

The ARC in this section claims that “The Aspartame Information Center Expert Medical Advisory Board was created to help guide the Center’s communications to health professionals and the public about aspartame benefits, safety, and role in a healthy diet.
The board members provide counsel on current medical and nutrition science, as well as insight on tools that help address the needs of health professionals in their work. Their backgrounds span critical areas of medicine and science, and each has unique experience in health and nutrition.”

According to the Aspartame Resource Center, simply looking at the ingredient list will reveal if the product contains aspartame, as the FDA demands that it is labelled.
However, note that even if it is not mentioned, but the list of ingredients contains “phenylalanine”, the product contains aspartame, as it is its component.

Yet, you must be vigilant, as aspartame can be added to products you do not expect it in, like vitamins or liquid antibiotics. Actually, it is the only way to avoid the ingestion of this harmful product and prevent its side-effects.
