Say Hi To The Superfood That May Help With Hypertension, Cholesterol and Constipation

Chlorella
is an ancient superfood that has been in existence for 540 million years and contains concentrations of vitamins, minerals, nucleic acids, amino acids, enzymes and much more.

Support Your Heart (Cardiovascular System)

Chlorella may help protect you from the number one cardiovascular cause of death in the U.S.—heart disease, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, and stroke.
But to tap into these benefits you must be able to digest the chlorella, which can be difficult. The majority of chlorella sold on the market today is broken cell or cracked cell wall chlorella, which provides very little chlorella absorption.
Currently, only Sun Chlorella, one of the longest operating and premier producers of chlorella, provides the most digestible chlorella on the market through cell wall pulverization.
(Courtesy of Sun Chlorella)
This makes Sun Chlorella easy to digest and it’s this absorption that allows chlorella to help with many things, like your heart by supporting its elastic arteries and regulating your blood pressure.
Chlorella also contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids that may lower the risk of heart disease.  The American Heart Association recommends omega fatty acids to make up at least 5 percent to 10 percent of our calories.

Regulate Your Blood Pressure

With 45.6 percent of U.S. adults suffering from hypertension, chlorella can support healthy blood pressure.

Regulate Your Cholesterol

Nearly one in three American adults have high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia). Chlorella may help maintain healthy LDL cholesterol levels in your body.

Energize Your Blood

Chlorella may help to regulate haemoglobin and red blood cells, enabling oxygen to flow better in your body. Rich in iron, chlorella also contains vitamin C which is needed for iron uptake in the body.

Healthy Bowel System

Chlorella may also help you to maintain a healthy bowel system.
As chlorella sweeps through your digestive system, it can bind to heavy metal toxins such as mercury, lead and cadmium, thereby cleansing your body. It’s chlorella’s cell wall that contains unique fibres that bind to toxins and digestive waste.
Pregnant women who suffer from constipation can take chlorella and start 6 months before conception to support their fertility. Chlorella can help remove heavy metal toxins which can hurt infant growth and health.
Important disclaimer: Do not substitute or stop any prescribed medication. Proper supervision and consultation with your physician are imperative.

Reading a book and watching a film are among the favourite ways Britons get to sleep!

By Astrid Hall
Reading a book, having a bath and watching a film are among the favourite ways Britons help themselves get to sleep – according to research published today.
A study of 2,000 adults found nearly half have difficulty sleeping when stressed after a busy day at work or due to relationship, financial or other worries.
Meditating, taking a hot shower and counting sheep also featured on the list of top 15 tactics used to unwind before bed.
Having a glass of milk, writing a to-do list for the following day and cleaning your bedroom also made the list.
It also emerged many of us choose options which we hope will help us de-stress and drop off to sleep – but which can actually have the opposite effect – such as drinking a tea, eating chocolate or consuming an alcoholic drink.
The study by Sleep Well Milk into how we unwind at the end of the day amid the pressures of modern life also found nearly two-thirds of those who took part said they are generally good at de-stressing themselves.
And it typically takes as long as 31 minutes to wind down.
Nearly half agreed they ‘get stressed easily’ with as many as 44 per cent confessing to ‘tossing and turning’ through the night due to fears or worries playing on their minds.
Sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley said stress is a common factor in many cases where people struggle to get a good night’s sleep.
He added: ‘’There are many studies around stress and sleep and this research is interesting in that it highlights some of the measures people will take to combat lack of sleep.
‘’But many of these methods are just short-term fixes.
‘’What people need to do is get into a regular bedtime routine, which could include their favourite de-stressing activity, as long as it becomes a habit so the brain recognises it as a sleep trigger.
Dr Stanley added that many bedtime routines can be counter-productive.
“Some things which appear innocent enough such as tea and chocolate can make it more difficult to fall asleep because they contain stimulants. Although alcohol can help you fall asleep it is known to disturb sleep in the later part of the night.
“Food, alcohol and drinks that contain stimulants like caffeine should be avoided as part of your de-stress pre-bed routine.’’
‘’Simple things that trigger early memories of bedtime are usually more effective, such as a warm bubble bath, glass of milk or writing a to-do list.’’
The research also revealed adults admitted to feeling ‘stressed’ at least three times daily for over one-fifth of their day.
And three quarters wish they were less stressed.
Thirty-seven percent will have a bubble bath and three in 10 will simply give someone a hug before bed in order to reduce their stress levels.
More than seven in 10 implement these stress-reducing tactics as it helps them to relax, with more than one in four said it helps put them in a good mood.
The research also found the top causes of stress which included running late, arguments or deadlines at work.
Sam Watts from Sleep Well Milk said: “The research has shown how many of us use quite traditional methods in order to get to sleep, with a number of Britons struggling to get a good night’s sleep due to stress.
‘’A good bedtime routine is vital in getting a solid night’s rest, so it’s important to make time to unwind before hitting the pillow.
‘’We are creatures of habit and from our earliest days we are encouraged to follow a routine of ‘bath, warm milk and bed’ but as we get older we tend to forget that and wonder why we are not ready to sleep when we climb under the duvet.”
The study also reveals interesting differences in de-stressing methods used across the nation.
For example, Scots take 50 percent longer to de-stress than Londoners, whereas having to cook a meal causes Welsh people half as much stress as those living in the East Midlands and driving is a lot less stressful for people living in Northern Ireland than it is in the South West of England.
The research was carried out by One Poll for Sleep Well Milk and the full results are available at www.sleepwellmilk.com

New Book, Processed Food Addiction: Foundations, Assessment, and Recovery!

The New Book, Processed Food Addiction: Foundations, Assessment, and Recovery, is an Indispensable Contribution to our Understanding of Overeating and Obesity

Boca Raton, FL – America’s obesity epidemic generates enormous interest in the United States and around the world. A new book by a doctor of addictive nutrition, Joan Ifland, describes the evidence that the epidemic could be driven by an addiction to processed foods. Her unique perspective organizes thousands of studies to reveal a picture of overeating as serious addiction to sugars, fats, salt, and other processed foods and drinks.

For the first time, Ifland assembles a narrative of overeating from the perspective of a classic substance use disorder similar to alcoholism or smoking. She includes insights from the extensive overlaps between drug addiction and processed food addiction from the individual to family systems to society as a whole.  The book describes how the Diagnostic Statistical Manual for Mental Illness 5 (DSM 5) illuminates consequences of processed food consumption to be similar to those for drug and alcohol addictions.  She also shows how to adapt addiction treatment protocols issued by the American Psychiatric Association to recovery from processed food addiction.

“As a food addiction researcher, you are always looking for new ways to see overeating and explain the spread of obesity and the metabolic syndrome,” says Ifland, who has been working in the field of processed food addiction since 1996. “Science provides this vantage point. Researchers have generated thousands of findings in obesity, eating disorders, and drug addiction. When viewed through the food addiction model, the studies come together to form a surprisingly consistent, complete, and comprehensive picture of the presence of an addition to overeating.”  Among them, as Ifland describes in the book, are MRI studies demonstrating that overeaters show the same neuro-adaptations as alcoholics and drug addicts.   There is also extensive evidence that chronic overeaters are experiencing consequences that match up with those of drug addicts and alcoholics.  Research showing that processed foods, especially sugar and high fructose corn syrup, helps to reinforce the premise that an addiction to processed foods is at work in the development of the metabolic syndrome.

Chronic overeaters who develop obesity and diabetes are portrayed by Ifland as candidates for caring and patient training in how to abstain from processed foods and craving triggers. Recovery for pediatric food addicts is described according to expert guidelines for the treatment of childhood obesity.

This is Ifland’s first reference about addiction to processed foods. Her popular works include Sugars and Flours: How They Make Us Crazy, Sick, and Fat (2001) and Dr. Ifland’s Food Addict’s Meal Prep Manual (2018).  Her instructional video is Victory over Food Addiction: Make Meals at Home (2013).

Superfoods for your brain!

It’s no secret that brain is one of the most vital organs in our body. It basically holds the joystick that controls all other vital organs and their functions. As you age, it is important to maintain your brain’s health too. Here are some superfoods for the brain to ensure good memory, concentration, physical health, and long-term psychological well being.
Omega 3 fats are abundantly found in fatty fishes, walnuts, other nuts and avocados. Fatty fishes improve memory and also improve the ability to recall events. Walnuts can improve memory, cognition and also promotes good sleep. Nuts are packed with Omega 3, as well as the antioxidant, vitamin E. These nutrients account for its brain-protective effects. Avocado is the only food in the fruit food group that contains fat. It improves brain health by preventing blockage of arteries which supply blood to the brain.
Berries are concentrated source of antioxidants. This prevents oxidative cell damage in the brain, thereby helps in maintaining brain health.
Eggs are packed with vitamin D, choline and vitamin B12, which aid in preventing brain cell damage. Having whole eggs every day can support brain health.
Turmeric has an active component, curcumin. It has excellent anti-inflammatory properties and has been proven to have preventive effects on Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Pumpkin seeds are also rich in micronutrients like zinc, copper, magnesium and iron that are essential for brain health, apart from being a strong source of omega 3.
Beetroot contains Betaine that promotes the release of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a mood stabilizer. Beetroot also contains a good amount of folic acid, which also promotes brain health.
Green tea is rich in antioxidants. Green tea extract has been proven to be helpful in treating psychiatric disorders.
Chamomile tea has proven effects on promoting good sleep and improving cognition. Green leafy vegetables are packed with Vitamin K. Eating them every day can help slow down cognitive and memory decline associated with ageing.
Dark chocolate contains flavonoids. It boosts memory, mood, and also prevents brain cells from damage.
Tomatoes contain good amounts of lycopene, which has protective effects against depression. Also a powerful antioxidant, it prevents damage to brain cells.
Coffee contains caffeine that boosts alertness and mood. It also has some protective effects on age-related brain disorders.
Broccoli is a super-food packed with vitamin K. This helps improve memory and also has been proven to improve the ability to remember verbal instructions.

Beyond Fitness: Understand the difference between a goal and a resolution!

A man’s usefulness depends upon his living up to his ideals insofar as he can. It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed. All daring and courage, all iron endurance of misfortune make for a finer, nobler type of manhood. Only those are fit to live who do not fear to die and none are fit to die who have shrunk from the joy and the duty of life.
— Theodore Roosevelt
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Oh my Jesus, this hurts. I am actually praying to Jesus about how much it hurts, not taking his name in vain, because to get through this workout is going to require divine intervention. My lungs hurt, my legs hurt and I am only 7 minutes in with 7 more to go.
“Layci, this is not pain, it is discomfort and you can be uncomfortable for a long time.”
Did Jesus just talk to me during this workout? Wait, nope, that was Ben Bergeron in my head, a famous CrossFit elite coach.
Why am I doing this to myself? Oh yeah, goals.
Pick up the big dog food bag and load it into the cart, the car and the house without any help. Qualify for Regional’s CrossFit competition. Play with my kids in the yard without getting exhausted. Live independently into my 90s. Back-squat 300 pounds. Do 10 pull-ups. Find my physical potential. Be in the best shape of my life at 40. Place in the top 15 percent of the world for the CrossFit Open. Eat a healthy, balanced plate 85 percent of the time.
Some of these are my goals, and some are the goals of people I work out with.
Understanding the difference between a goal and a resolution is the key to progression in any endeavour. A resolution is a general statement about the way you want things to be. For example I want to be healthier, I want my business to be more successful, I want to nurture my creativity — these are all resolutions. Goals, however, are where the rubber meets the road. Goals are measurable attainments that we succeed or fail at. I am going to lower my body fat by 6 percent, I am going to increase my profit margin by 3 percent, I am going to write 500 words a day for a month — these are goals.
Learning to set measurable goals is a critical skill to take your fitness as well as your business to the next level. If you cannot define the next level, you will never know when you have arrived. Measurable goals are the guideposts on the route to the summit.
My coach has taught me that any time we start something new, we go through three levels of adaptation. First level: You get better each time you practice it. This is the fun level. Every day is a PR (personal record) Party.
Second level: Put together a plan with measurable goals to make strength gains. This is the level where you fail, a lot, but you also get a lot better.
Third level: Refine the movement to take off the microscopic hairs that make you slow and inefficient. This is where champions are born.
One of the hallmarks of a well-run CrossFit program is that your coaches and your community know your goals. In fact, they help you define your goals and push you to never settle. You know what happens when you say a goal out loud, to people? It gets real, fast. Saying what you want and that you are planning to go after it is an act of vulnerability. All of a sudden, every workout has a purpose. If you don’t add that extra weight to the bar, you are choosing to not work toward your goals today. But guess what, your lifting buddies and your coaches, they know your goals now, too, because you told them. They are going to give you that side eye and ask you
if you really want it or if you
are just messing around. They are going to hold you accountable to yourself and make you look fear in the face. It is not comfortable.
If you hesitate to share goals you set, I would challenge that you are not really being humble. If we peel back the layers, I think you are probably motivated primarily by fear.
I agree heartily with Mr. Roosevelt that while it is hard to fail, it is much worse to never have tried to succeed. I believe that we were built to live big, full, powerful and dynamic lives. This kind of life does not happen by accident. It is not just for the lucky. It happens when we allow ourselves to be real and vulnerable enough to set goals that matter. It means sharing your life with people and allowing them to speak into it and letting them know when you fail. It means being brave and leaving your ego at the door.
Set some measurable, solid goals, personal or professional, and then tell someone who can hold you accountable. It makes those hours upon hours of hard work and discomfort so much more bearable when you know why you keep showing up. And when people are invested in your success with you, it makes every victory that much sweeter. It is no longer your quiet triumph. It is a group celebration, it is a community victory and it is that energy that you now invest in the goals of others.
Setting goals and sharing them gives the people watching you permission to do the same. Allow yourself to make someone brave. We all want to live embracing “the full joy and duty of life.”
• Layci Nelson owns Nelson Management Strategies and the Iron and Mortar Summit. In addition to lifting weights and making her lungs burn, she enjoys exploring the Yakima Valley with her two young boys, her astoundingly patient husband, and their little dog, too.

A Single Serving of Red Meat Per Day May Equal an Early Death!

red meat

A new Harvard study found that eating a single serving of red meat per day may raise the risk of early death.
The researchers followed more than 120,000 North American people, linked daily consumption of unprocessed red meat with a 13% increase in mortality risk.

20% Increased Risk of Death

And even bigger risks increased with a daily serving of processed meats. Eating just 2 strips of bacon or 1 hotdog or per day was associated with a 20% increased risk of death.

red meat dangers

Dr Frank Hu, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health co-authored a study published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine. HThisstudy provided clear evidence that regular consumption of red meat, particularly processed meat, substantially contributes to premature death.
Most of the study participants reported eating one or more daily servings of meat.  Produced during processing and cooking, red meat contains compounds known to boost cardiovascular disease and cancer, such as saturated fat, sodium nitrites and other chemicals.

Small Changes in Red Meat Consumption Can Make a Big Difference

Certified sports nutrition advisors recommend that small changes in red meat consumption can make a big difference. To avoid nutritional drawbacks associated with red meat, you can work around them by making smart choices, such as, not overeating red meat and eating it cooked well done. Your medium or rare steak is actually healthier for you that one that’s well done.

less than 18 ounces per week

Cancer experts advise eating less than 18 ounces per week. Limit your serving size to no more than three ounces. Swapping for healthy protein sources, such as fish, poultry, legumes and whole grains was linked to a decrease in mortality risk, ranging from 7% for fish to 19% for nuts.
Cooking meat at high temperatures when broiling, frying or grilling, formed chemicals called heterocyclic amines (HCAs).  The natural compounds in meat react at high temperatures and produce these chemicals, something that is not present in raw meats.
Heterocyclic amines in lab animals have been shown to cause colon tumours. In humans, a high intake of certain HCAs has been linked with a higher risk of colon polyps.

Vegetarian Dinner Twice a Week

Cutting back on meat and make room for healthier sources of protein, such as eggs. The idea is just to eat less meat and better quality meat, not processed meat. Try eating poultry or fish two times a week and a vegetarian dinner twice a week. Ultimately, when you choose to eat red meat, switch to leaner cuts and grass-fed cattle.

Scale Back on Red Meat for The Environment

People are urged to scale back on red meat consumption for the environmental reason too. A quarter-pounder with cheese takes 26 OZS of petroleum and leaves a 13 LBS carbon footprint. This is equivalent to burning 7 LBS of coal. Make the global decision and scale back!

Don't sweat the small stuff for more than a day—it'll make you ill!

Don't sweat the small stuff for more than a day—it'll make you ill image
Don't sweat the small stuff—but if you do, don't do it for more than a day. Stressing about minor problems for more than 24 hours affects your immune system, and makes you more susceptible to chronic diseases, a new study has found.
Those who still feel stressed and anxious the following morning seem to be the ones who damage their immune systems, say researchers from the University of California at Irvine.
Although we think of major life crises, such as a death or divorce, as having the most damaging effect on our health, the small daily upsets of life, such as an argument or someone jumping the queue, can cause similar problems—if we linger on them, said lead researcher Kate Leger.
In the study, Leger and her researchers questioned 1,155 people about daily stressors they had experienced over the previous eight days, and the effect they had on them, such as whether they had negative emotions about the incidents, such as feeling lonely, afraid, irritable or angry. The same group was contacted again 10 years later when they were asked to describe their health—and those whose negative emotions lingered were the ones more likely to also be suffering from a chronic health problem. They also suffered more functional impairments and difficulties with everyday tasks.
