High-dose vit. C gets patients out of ICU quicker!

High-dose vitamin C gets patients out of intensive care quicker image
The importance of high-dose vitamin C has been underlined yet again. Not only can it reverse cancer and heart disease, but it will also help get you out of the hospital sooner, even if you're in critical care.
Taking between 2 and 4 grams of the vitamin every day can shorten a hospital stay by up to 9 per cent. It doesn't sound much, but these patients were in intensive care units (ICUs), and it was touch-and-go whether they would leave at all.
The vitamin should be part of the daily care regime at every ICU, say researchers from the University of Helsinki, who took another look at 12 trials that had tracked the progress of 1,766 ICU patients.
Although just 0.1 grams is enough to maintain healthy plasma level of vitamin C in healthy people, the researchers say, typical ICU patients need around 4 grams a day because their levels are dangerously low.
In six trials, patients who were given an average of 2 G of vitamin C orally—not the most efficient way of delivering the vitamin which, ideally, should be administered intravenously—were out of the ICU around 9 per cent sooner.
It's perhaps not surprising. The vitamin influences hundreds of our genes and plays an essential role in the healthy functioning of our immune system. Previous studies have shown how it can reverse cancer, lower blood pressure, decrease atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), and reduce glucose levels in diabetes 2 sufferers.

CBD extracted from hops instead of cannabis!

Discovery could help patients access legally sourced CBD-based

medicine in jurisdictions where cannabis is illegal

Cannabidiol (CBD) is typically linked to the legality and the political landscape surrounding cannabis. But if CBD is derived from something other than cannabis, is the CBD still illegal?
To those in Canada who have, for years, enjoyed ready access to mail-order medical cannabis and local walk-in dispensaries featuring menus with 50+ strains, it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that only about 10 per cent of the world’s governments have elected to institute legal medical cannabis programs in their respective countries.
While cannabis remains illegal in much of the world, a new product developed by phytoceutical manufacturer Isodiol could put an end to the controversy surrounding CBD-based medicine in jurisdictions where cannabis is prohibited. Removing cannabis from the equation, ImmunAG is a CBD product that contains cannabidiol extracted from hops, a plant that is legal in every country.
“We think this will change the conversation,” said Isodiol Director of Communications Christopher Hussey, “and will start us down the path to a conversation where we don’t think of CBD as something that is derived from cannabis, but where CBD is simply something that is derived from plants.”
Hussey hopes that by moving the conversation away from cannabis politics and broadening the view to other, less divisive plants, Isodiol may be able to bring these products to more people in markets like the USA, where cannabis is still prohibited by federal law.

Beyond the bud: a natural phytocopeia

The hop vine is among dozens of plant species that produce phytocannabinoids and other compounds that interact similarly with the human endocannabinoid system.
One strain of liverwort that grows naturally in New Zealand, Radula marginata, produces a range of cannabinoids including perrottetinene and perrottetinenic acid.
Helichrysum umbraculigerum, a strain of daisy plant native to South Africa, contains large amounts of cannabigerol (CBG), a cannabinoid associated with antidepressant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Meanwhile echinacea, black pepper, and even chocolate all produce compounds that interact with the human endocannabinoid system.
Some critics have expressed concern that sourcing phytocannabinoids like CBD from plants other than cannabis would result in a loss of the whole-plant aspect of the medicine (the entourage effect that comes as a result of the combination of all the plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes working in concert).
But Hussey says hops is an ideal source for CBD due to the hops plant also producing a number of the terpenes responsible for that whole-plant entourage effect, such as caryophyllene and humulene.
Currently, Isodiol has developed two patented strains, one derived from Humulus kriya and one from the Humulus Ooty hops plants.
“The conversation shouldn’t be focused on cannabis,” Hussey emphasized, “it should be focused on bioactive phytoceuticals. It should be focused on how plants, in general, can help us feel better, and be better.”

Three of the best spices to prevent deadly hypertension symptoms!

HIGH blood pressure risk could be lowered by making some diet or lifestyle changes. You could reduce your chances of deadly hypertension symptoms and signs by adding these herbs and spices to your dinner every day. Should you check your blood pressure?

Turmeric has been my number one natural blood pressure reducer and cardiovascular spice for years
Dr Stephen Sinatra
Turmeric’s active ingredient, curcumin, could play a role in lowering blood pressure, according to cardiologist Dr Stephen Sinatra.
Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant the helps to break-up big clumps of platelets in the blood, he said.
If you’d prefer to take curcumin as a supplement, aim for around 500mg in a single day.
“You may not have heard of curcumin before, but you have probably heard of turmeric, the spice that is best known as an ingredient in Indian curry and yellow mustard.
“Turmeric has been my number one natural blood pressure reducer and cardiovascular spice for years, and its yellow colour comes from curcumin — a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that’s been found to reduce blood pressure by lowering the excess platelet aggregation that occurs in sticky, clot-forming blood.
“Plus, animal research suggests that it may reduce cardiomyopathy, though more human research is needed in the hypertensive population to confirm these findings. That’s why I recommend cooking with plenty of turmeric.”
High blood pressure diet: Prevent hypertension

You could also lower your blood pressure by adding ginger to your diet, added the cardiologist.
Ginger is a type of blood thinner that may help you to avoid hypertension, he said.
“You can try commercial organic ginger teas, or make your own from ginger root,” said Sinatra. “Simply chop the root into small pieces and boil for about five minutes.
“You can also use sliced or grated ginger to spice up any dish, as I frequently do with wild salmon.”
Meanwhile, a key component of cayenne pepper, capsaicin, could help to dilate blood vessels.

Healthy Aging: The Clock Is Ticking!

 YOUR HEALTH with RICK BELLANTI

It sounds pretty simple: The key to healthy aging is living a healthier lifestyle.
Eating a healthy diet is very important while we are aging and including some physical activity in your daily routine can go a long way toward promoting healthy aging. Studies show that a good diet as you age reduces your risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart diseases and certain cancers. As you get older, you might need less energy, but you still need just as many of the nutrients daily in your food.
Supplying your body the right nutrients daily and maintaining a healthy weight can help you stay active and independent. You’ll also spend less time and money at the doctor and for prescription medicines. As we age, our metabolism slows way down, so we need fewer calories than before. Our body also needs more of certain nutrients. That means it’s more important than ever to choose foods that give you the best nutritional value.
As we get older we want to choose the right foods to eat, so look for lean proteins, such as eggs, beans, seafood, lean meats. A variety of fruits and vegetables (the brighter in color the better). Whole grains such as brown rice and whole wheat pasta and low-fat dairy products. Choosing foods higher in fiber and low sodium/salt. Be careful of saturated fats and processed foods. Foods high in sugar or sugary drinks are not a good idea as they are also high in calories and empty calories. (calories with no nutritional value).
Vitamin D is a very important mineral we need as we age, and it plays several important roles in our body. But meeting vitamin D needs isn’t always easy especially as we age. Your kidneys play an important role in converting vitamin D to its active form but with aging, kidney function tends to decline, which results in decreased vitamin D production in our bodies. Aging also decreases vitamin D production in the skin, so being out in the sun is a great way to increase levels of vitamin D in the body, even just twenty minutes in the midday sun will go a long way. (many older adults, however, avoid the sun to stay cool).
Staying properly hydrated as we age, is very important when keeping our bodies functioning properly. But as we get older, our thirst-response system diminishes and we may not feel thirsty even as dehydration sets in and not taking in enough fluids can lead to more health problems. Some people with heart, kidney or liver disease may be more likely to become over-hydrated because their kidneys can’t excrete water normally. They may need to restrict the amount of fluids they drink and adjust their salt intake. The typical doctor will say drink six to 8 glasses of water a day.
Try to remember you also get hydration from a variety of places including fruit or vegetables, nonfat milk, even coffee or tea. Many fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, berries, grapes, peaches, tomatoes and lettuce, are almost 100 percent water. Water from foods typically accounts for twenty per cent of the recommended total fluid intake.
You also can be physically active at any age and physical activity alone, even without weight loss, can improve your healthy aging. Walking, dancing and gardening count as physical activity. You just need 30 minutes a day as you age. Start slowly and build from where you are, then mix it up. Remember, you don’t have to do it all at once, start with as little as five minutes and then build up gradually to where you are comfortable.
Healthy aging requires about 7 to 8 hours of restful, healthful sleep each night. Unfortunately, as we age our sleep number (of hours) declines. Sleep is so important as we age. It is pretty common to not get enough sleep, and it can really affect a person’s health and quality of life. But it’s quite normal for someone to sleep a little less, and less deeply, as you age. To prevent daytime tiredness and fatigue, set a regular schedule for sleep each day, same time to bed and out each day. Getting enough good-quality sleep is essential to staying healthy and aging well.
So, eat healthily and make good food chooses, get some sun (at least 20 minutes a day). Light exercise daily (walking is a great start 30 minutes a day). Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water and last, make sure you get a good night’s sleep. Happy, healthy aging is for everyone!

Does green tea have calming properties?

calming properties, green tea

A new study in the Journal of Medicinal Food has investigated whether the contents of a cup of green tea could have specific calming properties after a stressful experience

Dealing with stress can be a daily battle for some people but extreme stress can cause a condition known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD was known previously as ‘shell shock’ as it was common amongst soldiers fighting on the front line and is a type of anxiety disorder which someone may develop after an experience such as being involved in, or witnessing, traumatic events.
A new laboratory study1(in vivo) has been carried out to try to understand whether components of green tea can help with PTSD. In particular, an antioxidant polyphenol found in green tea, catechin, known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), has been shown to help relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression.
The study found that a single prolonged stress event caused an impairment in cognitive function. However, when EGCG was given daily for 14 days after stress, the impairment improved. In other words, EGCG protected against the damage caused by the stressful experience. Based on their findings, the authors proposed that ECGC could play a useful therapeutic role for people suffering from a post-traumatic stress disorder.
The proposed mechanism for the beneficial effects of the green tea antioxidant EGCG seems to involve pathways limiting the biochemical changes which cause neuroinflammation in the brain. Also, EGCG may reverse the dysfunctional aspects of learning and memory-related behaviour triggered by a traumatic stress episode.
Commenting on the study, dietitian, Dr Carrie Ruxton at the Tea Advisory Panel (TAP) notes: “This study adds to the growing evidence for the calming effects that a cup of tea can bring. The presence of natural
polyphenols, such as the antioxidant EGCG present in green tea plus those seen in black tea, have been linked with a number of beneficial effects, including heart health, gut health and even weight management2. This new study shows that EGCG also has the potential to ameliorate some of the harmful consequences after experiencing a highly stressful situation.
“As PTSD is a serious condition with far-reaching effects on wellbeing, a small action such as sitting down and relaxing with a calming cup of green tea could be a simple, yet effective, natural way to help on the journey of healing.”

Sitting too long claims 50,000 lives a year in the UK!

Sitting too long claims 50,000 lives a year in the UK image
Sitting has been described as 'the new smoking'—a problem that is claiming 50,000 lives a year in the UK alone.
Just 30 minutes of some physical activity—instead of sitting—every day can halve the rate of premature deaths from heart disease and cancer, another research group has found.
Spending much of the day sitting around increases the risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer—and, ultimately, death, with around 50,000 people in the UK dying, as a result, say researchers from Queen's University Belfast.
Around 30 per cent of adults spend at least six hours a day during the week sitting around—and this rises to 37 per cent at the weekends. Around a third of people who are sedentary will have at least two of the big diseases, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
They reckon that more than 11 per cent of deaths recorded in 2016 had a direct correlation to a sedentary lifestyle; put another way, more than 69,000 deaths that year could have been avoided had the people been more active.
And it doesn't take much, say researchers from the American Cancer Society. They reckon that substituting just 30 minutes of sitting for some physical activity would halve the mortality levels from chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
They reviewed the lifestyles, and activity levels, of more than 92,000 people for 14 years. Looking at the least active—defined as doing less than 17 minutes a day of any exercise—replacing 30 minutes of sitting for light activity reduced the risk of premature death by 14 per cent and substituting it for moderate to vigorous exercise lowered the risk to 45 per cent.

Big Pharma has ‘bought Congress’, says FDA chairman

Big Pharma has ‘bought Congress’, says FDA chairman image
Presidential election promises of an overhaul of drug policy and pricing will come to nothing—because Congress has been bought by Big Pharma, says a leading light at the US's Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Former House speaker Raul Ryan received $222,070 in drug company donations, with most of it being paid by drug giant Merck, and Democrat presidential hopeful Beta O'Rourke was given $171,255, according to Open Secrets, which has ranked the 20 members of the House and Senate who received the most money from the drugs industry during the 2017-18 election cycle. In all, the pharmaceutical industry paid out more than $100m to Congress and presidential hopefuls.
These donations mean that Big Pharma won't be reformed, said Dr Raeford Brown, chair of the FDA's Analgesics and Anaesthetics Committee—and its pricing policy won't be curbed. "Congress is supposed to have oversight for the FDA. If the FDA isn't going to hold pharma accountable, and Congress is getting paid to not hold pharma accountable, then it really doesn't matter who the president is because it's really about Congress," he said.
Minnesota senator and Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar have stated that she will not be bought by Big Pharma. "In Minnesota and across the country, no place has been immune from the devastating effects of opioid abuse. In my state, deaths from prescription drug abuse now claim the lives of more Minnesotans than homicides or car crashes. We need to continue to work together to tackle the scourge of opioid addiction that continues to take lives each day."
According to Open Secrets, Senator Klobuchar received small donations from drugs firms, with $8,000 donated by Abbott Laboratories.

Not so safe: Vaping also causing heart attacks and stroke?

Not so safe: Vaping also causing heart attacks and stroke image

E-cigarettes, or vaping, are not such a safe option. They also can cause a heart attack, coronary artery disease or depression, researchers say.
Users run a 'significant risk' of developing one of these conditions compared to non-smokers; e-cigarette smokers are 56 per cent more likely to have a heart attack and have a 30 per cent greater chance of suffering a stroke.
They are also 44 per cent more likely to suffer circulatory problems, including blood clots, and the chances of depression, anxiety and other emotional problems double, say researchers at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
The rates are lower than seen among tobacco users—who run a 165 per cent risk of a heart attack and a 94 per cent chance of developing heart disease—but they are still more significant than many had believed.
The researchers looked at reports of more than 96,000 people, some of whom used e-cigarettes, and compared their health against tobacco smokers. "Cigarette smoking carries a much higher probability of heart attack and stroke than e-cigarettes but that doesn't mean vaping is safe," said researcher Mohinder Vindhyal.
All e-cigarette smokers ran some risk of developing one of the health problems, whether they used the devices every day or just occasionally, although the risk increased with the frequency of use.
E-cigarettes were launched in 2007, and sales have increased 14-fold with around one in 20 Americans now using them. Since launch, 460 brands and 7,700 flavours have been developed.
