As per my usual recipe creation style, I like simple. So, if you’re
like me you might appreciate the simplicity of this recipe made with
ingredients you probably have in your kitchen already.
Now because it is so energizing, I do not recommend this as a
before-bed snack. While it is incredibly blood-sugar-balancing making
that aspect of it ideal for sleep, it is too energizing before bed.
Trust me on this one! My mom (Ma McCarthy) made it and had it later in the evening and she was up until 2am – yikes! Here’s the recipe.
Mochaccino Chia Breakfast Pudding
Ingredients
1 can 400 ml organic coconut milk, full fat
1/4 cup chia seeds
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup raw cacao powder
1 tbsp greens+ extra energy* (cappuccino flavour)
2-4 tbsp real maple syrup
1/4 cup strawberries mashed
2 tbsp mini chocolate chips
Instructions
Shake can of coconut milk before opening. This will help mix up the good fats that may have solidified.
Combine coconut milk with chia seeds and water in a medium size
bowl. Let sit overnight or for a few hours until it becomes
pudding-like.
Mix in raw cacao powder, greens+ extra energy and maple syrup.
Give it a taste test and you can decide at this point how sweet you want it to be. Add more maple syrup if need be.
Top with mashed strawberries and mini chocolate chips!
Notes
Please note, if you do not use full fat canned coconut milk you will
likely get a different consistency so just keep this in mind if you use
almond milk or any other kind of milk.
*If you don’t have Greens+ extra energy and you still want the cappuccino taste you could mix in 1 shot of decaf espresso.

I do recommend using a wire whisk to mix together the ingredients
because you’ll get a smoother consistency. A wire whisk is a kitchen
essential!

KAREN FOSTER Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), commonly
known as Cilantro or Dhania, is a powerful herb with many health
benefits. This plant is rich in micronutrients and nutritional
elements.
Various compounds in cilantro give it its distinct scent, which
plays a large role in how foods taste. In addition to pleasant
aromatic factors (described by some as fresh, grassy, and citrusy),
there are aldehyde chemicals, the same as found in soap. People who hate cilantro
may detect the unpleasant soapy compounds more than the pleasant
ones, or perhaps only the soapy ones. Research in identical twins
suggests there may be a genetic basis for this.
Studies have shown that coriander seed extracts
were able to decrease the plasma glucose, improve insulin sensitivity
and improved the serum lipid levelss. When coriander was added to the
diet of diabetic mice, it helped stimulate their secretion of insulin
and lowered their blood sugar. When given to rats, coriander reduced
the amount of damaged fats (lipid peroxides) in their cell membranes.
And when given to rats fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet,
coriander lowered levels of total and LDL (the "bad" cholesterol),
while actually increasing levels of HDL (the "good" cholesterol).
Research also suggests that the volatile oils found in the leaves of
the coriander plant, commonly known as cilantro, may have
antimicrobial properties.
In a human study, reported in Plant Foods For Human Nutrition,
researchers observed that coriander (seeds) had a significant
hypolipidaemic effect, resulting in lowering of levels of total
cholesterol and triglycerides, and increasing levels of high-density
lipoprotein. This effect appeared to be caused by increasing
synthesis of bile by the liver and increasing the breakdown of
cholesterol into other compounds. A Phytonutrient-Dense Herb

Coriander's volatile oil is rich in beneficial phytonutrients,

Fresh coriander (or cilantro) leaves should look vibrantly fresh and
be deep green in color. They should be firm, crisp and free from yellow
or brown spots. Whenever possible, buy whole coriander seeds
instead of coriander powder since the latter loses its flavor more
quickly, and coriander seeds can be easily ground with a mortar and
pestle. Even through dried herbs and spices are widely
available in supermarkets, explore the local spice stores or ethnic
markets in your area. Oftentimes, these stores feature an expansive
selection of dried herbs and spices that are of superior quality and
freshness compared to those offered in regular markets. Just like with
other dried spices, try to select organically grown dried coriander
since this will give you more assurance that it has not been

kept in an opaque, tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dark and

Multiple studies have revealed that cell phone radiation can cause
cancer. Did you know that The International Agency for Research on
Cancer (IARC) classified radio frequency fields (including those from

2011 when the World Health Organization (WHO) admitted that cell phone
radiation may cause cancer. The statement was based off of a cumulative
decision made by a team of 31 scientists, from 14 different countries,

Things You Can Do To Limit Your Exposure & Why You Shouldn’t Worry
Worrying is pointless, and solves nothing. That being said, coming
across such information can be scary, and that’s the last reaction you
should have; after all, our thoughts feelings and emotions alone have
shown to have a significant effect on our biology, and letting go of
fear could possibly be the first step in helping you limit the effect
that EMFs could be having on your body. That being said, here are some
others measures you can take:

points outUntil the industry starts taking this matter seriously, the
responsibility to keep children safe falls on the parents. To minimize
the risk to your brain, and that of your child, pay heed to the
following advice:
Don’t let your child use a cell phone. Barring a
life-threatening emergency, children should not use a cell phone, or a
wireless device of any type. Children are far more vulnerable to cell phone radiation than adults, because of their thinner skull bones.
Keep your cell phone use to a minimum. Turn your
cell phone off more often. Reserve it for emergencies or important
matters. As long as your cell phone is on, it emits radiation
intermittently, even when you are not actually making a call. Use a land
line at home and at work.
Reduce or eliminate your use of other wireless devices. Just
as with cell phones, it is important to ask yourself whether or not you
really need to use them every single time. If you must use a portable
home phone, use the older kind that operates at 900 MHz. They are no
safer during calls, but at least some of them do not broadcast
constantly even when no call is being made.
You can measure your exposure from your cordless phone is to measure
with an electrosmog meter, and it must be one that goes up to the
frequency of your portable phone. As many portable phones are 5.8
Gigahertz, we recommend you look for RF meters that go up to 8
Gigahertz.

Even without an RF meter, you can be fairly certain your portable phone
is problematic if the technology is labeled DECT, or digitally enhanced
cordless technology. Alternatively, you can be very careful with the
base station placement as that causes the bulk of the problem since it
transmits signals 24/7, even when you aren’t talking.

where you spend most of your time, and especially your bedroom, they may

Limit cell phone use to areas with excellent reception. The
weaker the reception, the more power your phone must use to transmit,
and the more power it uses, the more radiation it emits, and the deeper
the dangerous radio waves penetrate into your body. Ideally, you should
only use your phone with full bars and good reception.
Avoid carrying your cell phone on your body, and do not sleep with it under your pillow or near your head.Ideally, put it in your purse or carrying bag. Placing a cell phone in your bra
or in a shirt pocket over your heart is asking for trouble, as is
placing it in a man’s pocket if he seeks to preserve his fertility.
The most dangerous place to be, in terms of radiation exposure, is
within about six inches of the emitting antenna. You do not want any
part of your body within that area while the phone is on.
Respect others; many are highly sensitive to EMF.
Some people who have become sensitive can feel the effects of others’
cell phones in the same room, even when it is on but not being used.
If you are in a meeting, on public transportation, in a courtroom or
other public places, such as a doctor’s office, keep your cell phone
turned off out of consideration for the “secondhand radiation” effects.
Children are also more vulnerable, so please avoid using your cell phone
near children.
Use a well-shielded wired headset: Wired headsets
will certainly allow you to keep the cell phone farther away from your
body. However, if a wired headset is not well-shielded — and most of
them are not — the wire itself can act as an antenna attracting and
transmitting radiation directly to your brain.
So make sure the wire used to transmit the signal to your ear is shielded.
One of the best kinds of headsets use a combination of shielded wire
and air-tube. These operate like a stethoscope, transmitting the sound
to your head as an actual sound wave; although there are wires that
still must be shielded, there is no wire that goes all the way up to
your head.

“Avoid using laptop computers on your lap.

Switch to flat-screen TVs and computer monitors as these emit less EMFs than the older styles.
If you live in close vicinity to or underneath electrical wires,

I wanted to end off on a comedic note since that only seemed fitting

Most of you have surely experienced some kind of feet issues in life,
and you are well aware of the fact that the numerous products offered
on the market may sometimes fail to deliver satisfactory results, or
just need too much time.
Yet, we will offer some simple, but extremely effective tricks to
help you treat all kinds of problems with the feet, completely
naturally, using ingredients that are already in your kitchen.
In order to cure fungal infections, you should regularly soak the
feet in mouthwash for half an hour. Namely, mouthwash has effective
ingredients, like alcohol, which will treat the infection. Moreover,
soaking the hands in mouthwash will also treat the fungal infection on
the hands.
Namely, you can use onion to cure foot corns. All you need to do is
to soak a thicker onion slice in vinegar and apply it on the lower part
of the foot. Next, put on socks. Repeat this procedure every evening
until you get the desired results. The corns will soften and they will
be easy to remove.
In the case of blisters, you will benefit a lot from the use of
antiperspirants. It may cause a little pain, but it will dry the area of
the blister and will accelerate its healing.
This is an extremely effective method as chili peppers are high in
capsaicin which reduces the swelling and soothes the nerves. Moreover,
you can also use salt in order to relieve the pain caused by bunions, as
salt is rich in magnesium sulfate which reduces inflammation and
alleviates pain.
On the case of gout, you should completely avoid or significantly
reduce the intake of sugar, as it is linked to gout. Furthermore, you
can treat the inflammation by consuming cherries and strawberries as
well.
Also, you should use garlic in the case of Athlete’s foot. All you
need to do is to place a smaller piece of garlic between the toes, and
leave it to act for 24 hours.
Studies on the human gut have added further
evidence that emulsifiers and additives found in most processed foods
are linked to obesity, diabetes and inflammatory bowel disorders.
Studies have used mice to test the effect of two
common emulsifiers - carboxymethylcellulose and polysorbate-80 - on
the microbiome make up and metabolism, finding that relatively
low-level concentrations of the emulsifiers resulted in distinct
alterations to the gut microbial ecosystem (microbiota) and led to
low-grade inflammation and the onset of metabolic syndrome.
Interestingly enough polysorbate-80 it is also an emulsifier used in popular brands of ice cream. The facts is preservatives, emulsifiers, and sweeteners have saturated the food supply for more than four decades.
Emulsifiers are used to improve a food's texture
and to prevent mixtures from separating, particularly in ice cream. Last
year, Benoit Chassaing of Georgia State University showed that mice
that drank water containing one of two emulsifiers underwent changes in
gut bacteria and inflammation of the gut -- changes that led to obesity
and diabetes in these animals.
However, mice that didn't have any gut bacteria
because they had been raised in a sterile environment didn't become ill
when given the same additives, suggesting that it is the emulsifiers'
effect on the microbiome that is to blame. When the ill mice stopped
consuming emulsifiers, their gut bacteria gradually returned to normal.
The question is whether the same might be true
for humans. The growing use of emulsifiers has coincided with a rise in
obesity and diabetes, says Chassaing, while these conditions aren't as
common in countries where less processed food is consumed.
Now Chassaing has supported his findings in mice
using a simulation of the human gut. Working with a team in Belgium, he
looked at two emulsifiers: carboxymethylcellulose (E566 on EU labels)
and polysorbate-80 (E433). When added to a series of flasks that mimic
the conditions of the human digestive tract, each caused an increase in
the levels of a bacterial protein called flagellin, known to cause
inflammation at high concentrations. Chassaing presented the results at a
recent meeting at the Royal Society in London.
In addition to this study, there have been studies
in Food and Chemical Toxicology which showed
that Polysorbate 80 causes infertility. Baby
female rats were injected with polysorbate 80 at days 4-7
after birth. It accelerated the maturing of the rats
and caused changes to the vagina and womb
lining, hormonal changes, ovary deformities
and degenerative follicles.
According to Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, Volume 95, Number 6, December 2005 , pp. 593-599(7), "it
is of current relevance as a 'hidden'
inductor of anaphylactoid reactions", and
"Polysorbate 80 was identified as the
causative agent for the anaphylactoid reaction of nonimmunologic
origin in the patient. The study included a
pregnant woman who suffered anaphylactic shock
after being given a IV drip of multi-vitamins
containing polysorbate 80.

The simulator results are more convincing than
the mouse studies, since lab animals and humans have vastly different
gut microbiomes, says Glenn Gibson of the University of Reading in the
UK, who studies gut disorders. "The definitive test, however, is
obviously a human trial."
Chassaing is now enrolling volunteers for the
first human trial to look at the effects of emulsifiers on gut and
metabolic health. Carrying out this study won't be easy, he says, as the
participants' diets will have to be strictly controlled.
In his earlier work, the mice were given up to 1
per cent of an emulsifier in their water, which Chassaing thinks
reflects the levels some people may be consuming. But Patrice Cani of
the Louvain Drug Research Institute in Belgium thinks people who eat a
balanced diet are unlikely to be exposed to the levels given to the
mice.
Nevertheless, Cani says, we should be concerned.
Whatever the results of the human trial, regulators need to rethink the
way they test the safety of food, he says, as existing tests were
developed before we understood the importance of our gut microbiota and
how they can be affected by what we consume.
Sweet potatoes can be considered
a superfood. They are one of the healthiest and cheapest vegetables on
the planet. (And one day, perhaps, even off the planet, as NASA has chosen the sweet potato for space missions.) A study out of the University of Washington aimed to identify which vegetables provided the most nutrients per dollar. In my video, Anti-Cancer Potential of Sweet Potato Proteins,
you can see a graph of affordability versus nutrition for different
foods. The healthiest foods, like dark green leafy vegetables, may also
be the cheapest, and the highest nutrient-rich food scores per dollar
were obtained for sweet potatoes.
Sweet potatoes are not just packed with nutrition but may also have
special cancer-fighting properties. In 1931, a unique protein was discovered in sweet potatoes. It turns out that 80% of the protein in sweet potatoes is a type of protease inhibitor with potential anticancer effects. These proteins were originally tested against leukemia and appeared to suppress the growth of leukemia cells in a petri dish.
But how would a sweet potato protein ever get into our bloodstream?
As soon as most proteins hit our stomach, they start getting digested.
To get around the digestion issue, researchers tried
sweet potato protein against tongue cancer cells (sweet potato proteins
certainly come in contact with our mouth!). Tongue cancer is often
treated with chemotherapy, and most of the chemo drugs for tongue cancer
have adverse effects; so, it is indispensable for us to find other
therapeutic strategies. Sweet potato protein rapidly diminished
viability of the cancer in vitro within a matter of days, leading the
researchers to propose that sweet potatoes may be useful for human tongue cancer. But could they possibly help with other cancers as well?
Remarkably, this special class of proteins doesn’t just survive digestion, but may also be absorbed into the bloodstream intact (in at least two of the nine women with advanced cervical cancer researchers tried giving them to).
Most recently, sweet potato proteins were tried
on colorectal cancer cells, one of our most common and deadly cancers.
Normally, we just surgically remove the colon, but that only works in
the early stages since there are often “micrometastases” outside the
colon that can subsequently lead to cancer recurrence and death; so,
we’ve been searching for anti-metastatic agents. Not only does sweet
potato protein slow down the growth of colon cancer cells, but it may
also decrease cancer cell migration and invasion.
Sweet potato consumption has also been associated with lower gallbladder cancer rates, but it has never been directly put to the test, but what’s the downside?
Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite snacks. During the harsh Boston
winters during my medical training, I used to put two freshly
microwaved sweet potatoes in my coat pockets as natural hand-warmers.
When they cooled down, my hand-warmers became instant healthy snacks!

The other day my friend Nell woke up and complained of a sharp
pain behind her eye. She said it felt as if she was being stabbed with
an ice pick.
Right away she panicked, and wondered if a tumor was growing behind
her eye. Thankfully that wasn’t the case, but Nell still wanted the best
“pain behind the eye” treatment.
First, we had to determine the causes of the pain behind her eye. A
pain or headache behind the eye is often a sign of a greater problem.
That being said, the cause of the eye pain is not always easy to
determine.
The pain can be sharp and intense as it was for Nell, but it can also
be dull. Other symptoms related to feeling pain behind the eye include a
fever, tearing, redness, numbness, double vision, weakness, light
sensitivity, sinus pressure, and feeling pain whenever you move your
eye.
What Causes Pain Behind the Eye?
As mentioned, pain behind the eye is most likely not a serious
problem, but the cause is important to figure out. What causes pain
behind the eye? The following are many of the causes associated with
pain behind the eyes.
Sinusitis: Sinusitis is a sinus cavity inflammation
that causes pressure and pain behind your cheek bones or eyes. Other
symptoms of sinusitis include fatigue, toothaches, fever, a stuffy nose,
a reduced sense of taste, and tenderness in the front of the face.
Causes of sinusitis include a respiratory infection, environmental
allergies, or food allergies or sensitivities.
Vision problems: A pain behind the eye is sometimes
related to vision problems, including farsightedness, nearsightedness,
and astigmatism. The syndrome presbyopia causes blurred near
vision and can also produce pain behind the eyes. The pain behind the
eye will result from the brain and eye trying to compensate from the
from vision problems. Intense focusing and squinting can lead to
shooting pain behind the eye.
Dry eye syndrome: Dry eye syndrome is also called
sicca syndrome, keratitis sicca, or simply just dry eyes! It is thought
that between 17% and 30% of people suffer from dry eye syndrome at some
point during their life. When dry eyes are persistent, headaches and
light sensitivity will also occur. The pain will lead to pain behind the
eye.
Scleritis: Scleritis is inflammation from inside the sclera—the
tough outer eyeball coating. The condition is also known to produce
stabbing pain behind the eye, and pain from eye movement. Other symptoms
include light sensitivity and redness, and it can develop without any
underlying cause. However, scleritis may manifest from scleroderma, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis.
Optic neuritis: Optic neuritis will occur when the
optic nerve becomes inflamed. The optic nerve is the cable that connects
the eye and the brain. In turn, the condition will often cause pain
behind the eye or from eye movement. Optic neuritis is thought to lead
to the development of multiple sclerosis.
Migraines: The cause can also be a throbbing pain
behind the eye headache. Migraines will only affect six percent of those
with headaches, but they are very intense and painful. Migraine
sufferers will often complain about pain behind their eyes. Migraine headaches
can be triggered from certain smells, eating something that causes an
allergic reaction, stress, and flashing strobe lights. Migraine
sufferers will often get them at least once each month.
Ocular migraine: An ocular migraine is a rare and
more serious problem that affects one of every 200 people who suffer
from migraines. It is a common pain behind the eye headache that will
often bother just one eye. The condition is also called a retinal
migraine. The condition requires medical attention immediately, and it
may be a sign of a tumor.
Cluster headaches: A cluster headache is a more
painful type of headache. It even leads to waking up in the middle of
the night with an intense pain behind your eye. Frequent periods of
cluster headaches will disappear for weeks or months, and then reappear
later on. The cluster headache is triggered by a sudden histamine or serotonin release; other symptoms will include red eyes, tearing, a stuffy nose, and eye swelling.
Aneurysm: A brain aneurysm is another possible
cause of pain behind the left eye. An aneurysm will occur when an artery
wall or blood vessels in the brain are weak. As a result, there may be
hemorrhagic bleeding or a stroke. Many times hemorrhagic strokes are
subarachnoid hemorrhages that will lead to pain behind the left eye and
throbbing headaches.
Papilloedema: Papilloedema is a condition of optic
disc swelling caused by an increase in intracranial pressure. It may
also be caused by inflammation, hemorrhages, and brain tumors. The
swelling will occur for hours and even weeks at a time. Many times
coughing and sneezing make the condition worse, but lying down will
improve symptoms. Signs of papilloedema include headaches, double or
blurry vision, and pain behind the eye.
Glaucoma: Throbbing pain behind the eye can also be
caused by glaucoma. The condition is known as vision loss caused by
increased intraocular pressure. The pain will occur when pressure from
one of the eyes builds, and eventually causes damage. Other symptoms of
glaucoma include blurry vision, nausea,
vomiting, mild headaches, swollen eyelids, watery eyes, and the gradual
loss of peripheral vision. Nutritional deficiencies, diabetes,
hypertension, and some prescription drugs are possible causes of
glaucoma.
How to Treat Pain Behind the Eye?
Treatment is important with pain behind the eyes. Treatment for pain
behind the eyes will depend on the cause. For instance, pain relievers
like “Ibuprofen” can help treat a pain behind the eye headache. On the
other hand, soaking your feet in hot water, and immersing your hands in
cold water can also help. This can help when the pain behind the eyes is
headache-related. The following are some other natural pain behind the
eye treatment options:
1. 5-HTP
Several studies have found that 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) can
prevent and treat tension and migraine headaches by increasing serotonin
and endorphin levels. 5-HTP is considered a natural painkiller that
affects circulation in the brain’s blood vessels.
In one of the largest double-blind studies of 5-HTP for migraine headaches published in the journalEuropean Neurology
in 1986, 124 patients had received either 5-HTP or the migraine drug
methysergide for a six-month period. Treatment reduced the frequency of
headaches by 50%, while 71% of patients taking 5-HTP saw improved
migraine headache symptoms.
2. CoQ10
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) deficiency is common in people with migraine
headaches. CoQ10 can prevent and reduce pain behind the eyes caused by
migraine headaches. Studies have found that CoQ10 is effective and well-
tolerated for treatment of headaches.
In a randomized, crossover, double-blind, and placebo-controlled study published in the journalCephalalgia in 2011, CoQ10 was found to reduce the severity of headaches in 120 patients.
3. Magnesium
Magnesium deficiency is also well established in migraine sufferers. In turn, magnesium is thought to improve pain behind the eyes related to glaucoma and migraine headaches. In glaucoma, magnesium will relax blood vessel walls, and improve blood flow to the eyes.
Various studies have found that magnesium can effectively treat migraine headaches, and prevent tension headaches. The magnesium dosage should reduce if diarrhea occurs from the supplement.
4. Detect and eliminate food allergies/intolerances
Tension and migraine headaches are usually triggered by food
allergies and intolerances. Scientific evidence has found that the
detection and removal of intolerable or allergenic foods can greatly
reduce or eliminate migraine and headache symptoms like pain behind the
eyes.
Testing for food allergies and intolerances include enzyme-linked
immunosorbent assay (ELISA), a bio-meridian test, a meridian stress
assessment test, a bio-analysis with bio-energetic test, and a food

relieve pressure on the eyes related with glaucoma. Bladder 2 (B2) is
also useful for tired and painful eyes related to sinus and headache
pain.
7. Exercise and yoga
Exercise and yoga can help treat conditions related with pain behind
the eyes, including headaches and sinusitis. Postures that help those
with headaches include the dolphin pose, bridge pose, big toe pose,
corpse pose, and downward-facing dog. Using a neti pot can also help
pain behind the eyes related to sinusitis.
A neti pot is a ceramic pot that delivers a saline wash to the nasal
passages, and it is an object used in traditional yoga practices. Camel
pose, all limbs pose, cobra pose, and cow’s face pose are also great
postures for sinusitis. Yoga can also help relieve stress associated
with headaches.
When to See a Doctor for Eye Pain
When is it the right time to seek medical attention when you
experience pain behind the eye? It is good time to visit the doctor when
eye pain occurs, and you also have a weak immune system, you wear
contact lenses, or pain has worsened after three days of using
medication. Also, contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the
following symptoms:
See halos around lights
The pain behind the eye is strangely severe
You suddenly have problems seeing clearly
Your eye is very painful to touch
The eye appears to bulge outward
Moving the eye is difficult
Eye pain is accompanied by vomiting or abdominal pain
Eye pain is caused by a chemical or a foreign object
How to Prevent Eye Pain?
What are other ways to treat pain behind the eyes? Remember that a
healthy lifestyle is important to prevent and treat pain behind the
eyes, especially when headaches are the cause. A healthy lifestyle will
include getting adequate rest and eating lots of vegetables and other
whole foods. It is also a good idea to drink plenty of water, while
avoiding processed foods, smoking, and alcohol.
How do you avoid pain behind the eyes? It can help by wearing proper
eye protection when the cause of your pain behind the eye is
vision-related. Here are some other ways you can prevent pain behind the
eyes:
Be sure to routinely and thoroughly clean your contact lenses. Also,
wear your glasses whenever you can to allow time for your eyes to rest.
Contacts should also not be worn longer than intended.

There is a reason why the most widely accessed article in the history of the Public Library of Science (PLoS) is entitled, Why Most Published Research Findings Are False. In the report, researchers stated that most current published research findings are false, and this was more than 10 years.
Dr. Peter Gotzsche, co-founder of the Cochrane Collaboration (the
world’s most foremost body in assessing medical evidence), hopes to make
clear this very problem. He is currently working to inform the
world about the dangers associated with several pharmaceutical grade
drugs. Based on his research, he estimates that 100,000 people in the
United States alone die each year from the side-effects of correctly
used prescription drugs, noting that “it’s remarkable that nobody raises an eyebrow when we kill so many of our own citizens with drugs.” He published a paper last year in the Lancet arguing that
our use of antidepressants is causing more harm than good, and taking
into consideration the recent leaks regarding antidepressant drugs, it
seems he is correct.
The most recent example of this kind of corruption in relation
to antidepressants comes from a study that was published last week in
the British Medical Journal by researchers at the Nordic
Cochrane Center in Copenhagen. The study showed that pharmaceutical
companies were not disclosing all information regarding the results of
their drug trials:
[This study] confirms that the full degree of harm of antidepressants
is not reported. They are not reported in the published literature, we
know that – and it appears that they are not properly reported in
clinical study reports that go to the regulators and from the basis of
decisions about licensing. (source)
Researchers looked at documents from 70 different double-blind,
placebo-controlled trials of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
(SSRI) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) and
found that the full extent of serious harm in clinical study reports
went unreported. These are the reports sent to major health authorities
like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Tamang Sharma, a PhD student at Cochrane and lead author of the study, said:
We found that a lot of the appendices were often
only available upon request to the authorities, and the authorities had
never requested them. I’m actually kind of scared about how bad the
actual situation would be if we had the complete data. (source)
This is not the first time that pharmaceutical companies have been
caught manipulating science in order to get antidepressants onto the
shelves. It was only a couple of months ago that an independent review
found that the commonly prescribed antidepressant drug Paxil
(paroxetine) is not safe for teenagers, even though a large amount of
literature had already suggested this previously. The 2001 drug trial
that took place, funded by GlaxoSmithKline, found that these drugs were
completely safe, and used that ‘science’ to market Paxil as safe for
teenagers.
Gotzche’s two main areas of focus are antidepressants and
“non-steroidal anti-inflammatory” painkillers like ibuprofen, tylenol,
celecoxib, and diclofenac. Another is Vioxx, which was actually
withdrawn after it was discovered that it caused more than 100,000 cases
of serious heart disease in the United States during the five years
that it was on the market.
According to Gotzche, these deaths are just the tip of the iceberg
when it comes to the failure of the drug regulatory process to protect
patients:
These terms for our drugs are invented by the
drug industry. They had a huge financial interest in calling these
things anti-inflammatory. It lured doctors into believing that these
drugs somehow also had an effect on the disease process and reduced the
joint damage.
In his paper he also notes that antidepressants have replaced drugs
that were found to be harmful, like Valium and Xanax, but are just as
addictive and their side effects just as dangerous.
According to Professor Gotzsche, here’s a list of things you want to avoid:
Antidepressants for all, because they probably don’t work for severe cases of depression
All brain-active drugs in children
Anti-psychotics and other brain-active drugs for the elderly.
Psychotropic drugs should be used as little as possible and mostly in
very acute situations, as they are very harmful when used long term
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used for arthritis, muscle
pain and headaches, including over-the-counter, low dose ibuprofen.
These drugs should be used as little as possible
Mammography screening, as it doesn’t prolong life whereas it makes
many healthy women ill through over diagnosis and leads to the premature
death for some because radiotherapy and chemotherapy increases
mortality when used for harmless cancers detected at screening.
Drugs for urinary incontinence, as they very likely don’t work
“The case against science is straightforward: much of the

analyses, and flagrant conflicts of interest, together with an obsession
for pursuing fashionable trends of dubious importance, science has

Nearly every major fitness tracker on the market has security issues
that leave their users at risk of tracking by third parties, according to a report from Open Effect.
The Canadian non-profit research organisation found that seven of the
eight fitness trackers it looked into emit identifiable signals that
means users could be surreptitiously tracked over long periods of time —
and some have further security issues, including not encrypting user
data. (We first saw Open Effect's report over on The Daily Dot.)
It's good news for Apple customers — the Appe Watch is the only device surveyed that got a clean bill of health in the report.
But the Basis Peak, the Fitbit Charge HR, the Garmin Vivosmart, the
Jawbone UP 2, the Mio Fuse, the Withings Pulse O2, and the Xiaomi Mi
Band all failed on one or more fronts.
The main problem is that the devices have an unchanging MAC address
(Media Access Control address) when not paired with a smartphone. This
means monitoring equipment could detect this MAC address and use it to
track users over extended periods of time without the user's knowledge.
For example, Open Effect suggests users could be tracking in shopping centres, and the data could be sold to marketers and used by police (emphasis ours):
Our findings directly relate to the case
of shopping centres that scan for Bluetooth devices to monitor customer
journeys as they move from store to store. As an example, a mall visitor
wearing a Fitbit Charge HR might have turned off their phone’s
Bluetooth radio to save power, or forgotten their phone at home or in
the car. In either case, the Fitbit device would emit advertising
packets detectable by the shopping centre’s scanning. Since the
Fitbit does not change its MAC address the shopping centre can monitor
the presence of the MAC address relative to its scanners and pinpoint
the customer’s location. The shopping centre could record all
this location data for future study. Where the shopping centre is part
of a conglomerate of similar venues, or where the scanning system is
provided to the mall by a third party, location records derived from
Bluetooth scans from a variety of different venues might be stored
together to provide an overview of all the places the organization has
‘seen’ a particular MAC address.
Law enforcement agencies might also be interested in databases holding Bluetooth MAC addresses.
In the case of the shopping mall, authorities might request access to a
subset, or all of, the retained records. This has the effect of the
collection of Bluetooth MAC information being used far in excess of the
reason the devices were emitting advertising packets: to pair with a
phone, in order for the user to track their fitness behaviours. The
shopping centre could also decide to sell its customer data to a
marketing agency or other data broker without first notifying customers.
In contrast, the Apple Watch changes its MAC address when turning on and off, and at ten-minute intervals.
Some devices also failed to properly secure user data, and allow for the faking of health records.
Garmin Connect does not employ basic data transmission security
practices for its iOS or Android applications and consequently exposes
fitness information to surveillance or tampering," the report finds.
And "Jawbone and Withings applications can be exploited to create fake
fitness band records. Such fake records call into question the
reliability of that fitness tracker data use in court cases and
insurance programs."
Business Insider reached out to the companies named in the report for comment.
In a statement, Jawbone spokesperson Patrick Sebastian Henkel
downplayed the risks. "We do not believe the vulnerability described
[Bluetooth tracking] causes significant risk to our users, and we do not
believe our users are at risk of having their location tracked over a
long period of time," Jawbone's statement says. "No user data is
transmitted during device discovery. User data is encrypted for transfer
and will only be transmitted once a secure connection is established
between the activity tracker and a trusted application. Additionally,
device discovery is disabled when this connection is active. Prior to
the Open Effect findings, this issue had not been raised to our Customer
Care team."
"From an industry perspective, [Bluetooth Low
Energy] privacy is a relatively new control and Fitbit is actively
exploring how to incorporate BLE privacy into future products," FitBit
said in a statement. "It’s important to note that Open Effect’s finding
can only be used to confirm that an active tracker is nearby. No
personally identifiable information is shared or accessible. It’s highly
unlikely that a hacker could stumble across a particular device, know
who it belongs to, and track the device's movement. We are not aware of
any consumer reports, inquiries or security incidents related to this
issue and will continue to monitor it carefully."
