Add flaxseeds to your diet today!

Have you heard about the many benefits of flaxseeds? The health benefits are overwhelming!
Flaxseeds are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids; in fact, they're one of the top sources. Flaxseeds primarily have alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which makes them a good source of omega-3 fatty acids to add to baked goods. ALAs are able to withstand high temperatures that occur during baking.

Because of the high omega-3 content, flaxseeds can be helpful to the cardiovascular system. ALA and the lignans flaxseeds contain can help protect the blood vessels from inflammatory damage and help reduce stress. With the high content of omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseeds can definitely help us increase our overall omega-3 intake, and by doing that, we will then help regulate and possibly lower our risk of high blood pressure. Because of the high fiber content, flaxseeds can also help reduce the ratio of LDL (the "bad" fat) to HDL (the "good" fat) cholesterol.

Another benefit of flaxseeds is that they contain lignans. Lignans are like fiber, but you're getting much more than just fiber. They also provide antioxidant protection through their unique structure, which gives them even more health support. For example, oxidative stress (often related to lack of antioxidant intake) and excessive inflammation are common risk factors for a variety of health issues (insulin resistance, arthritis, cancer, asthma, obesity, etc.) and lignans have been shown to reduce this stress. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of flaxseeds also make them a good candidate for cancer prevention. How is this possible? Chronic inflammation and chronic oxidative stress are risk factors for cancer development. Cancer risk reduction is strongest for breast, prostate and colon cancer. Breast and prostate cancer are included in the list of hormone-related cancers, meaning our hormones are directly related to how often these types of cancer cells multiply.

Thirdly, flaxseeds also have high fiber content (about 4 grams in 2 tablespoons) and mucilage gum content. Mucilage gum is a water-soluble fiber that is gel-forming and can provide great support for the intestinal tract. This type of fiber prevents food from going through the digestive tract too quickly. This improves the absorption of nutrients. The fiber content of flaxseeds helps delay gastric emptying and improve absorption of nutrients. Flaxseed fibers also help to steady passage of food in the intestines. It is known that a high-fiber diet can help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, and because of the high content of fiber in flaxseeds, this is a good way to get fiber into your system.

The combination of these three benefits - omega-3 fatty acids, high lignan content and mucilage gums - is what makes flaxseeds so great for our health. Now, how can you incorporate more flaxseeds into your diet? Finding creative ways can always be fun. Adding ground flaxseeds to muffins, cookies and bread is a good way to do this. As mentioned earlier, the particular omega-3 fatty acid they contain is able to withstand high temperatures for a good amount of time. This means they will not lose their benefits. Grab some ground flaxseed for your baked goods, smoothies or yogurt.

Scientists Develop Bioactive Paper to Protect Food, Avoid Human Health Risks!

The packaging paper and carton will have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Researchers from Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council (Conicet) have developed a bioactive paper with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties to solve the storage and transport issues that cause food to decay and threaten human health.

The project won an annual prize funded by food company Arcor and the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion on Tuesday. The award includes a cash component of US$7,600. Dr. Raquel Martini, one of the researchers, said the prize “is an incentive to move forward and bring scientific work closer to society because these are projects that apply to people’s daily life.”
According to researchers, in most cases, packaged foods are damaged by micro-organisms such as molds, yeasts, and bacteria that can be harmful to humans. The research aims to provide solutions to this problem by developing a new type of paper or carton packaging where specific natural molecules are injected into the surfaces’ cellulose.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) packaging of food is one of the factors that affect the loss of food, together with the collection, transport, infrastructure or market and prices mechanisms, as well as institutional and legal frameworks. This means that up to a third of all food is spoiled or wasted before being consumed by people.
Dr. Martini said “the objective is to continue expanding and consolidating the bioactive packaging research and other related projects” to optimize food conservation.

Sugary soda and cola drinks reduce fertility!

A couple who drink even one can of cola or soda a day reduce their chances of starting a family—and the impact on fertility of energy drinks could be even greater.
A woman drinking at least one sugar-sweetened soda every day is 25 per cent less fertile, and it has an even bigger effect on the man, whose fertility levels drop by an average of 33 per cent.
Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine fear that energy drinks could be having an even bigger effect, although they say the study group size was too small to definitively draw that conclusion.
They surveyed 3,828 women, aged from 21 to 45, and 1,045 of their male partners, and they analysed lifestyle factors, including the number of sugar-sweetened sodas they drank.
Even after allowing for other factors that could affect fertility—such as obesity, caffeine intake, alcohol, smoking and diet—the researchers found that soda drinks were directly linked to fecundity, defined as an ability to conceive in any 30-day cycle.
Around 15 per cent of couples in the US have difficulty conceiving, and the researchers suggest that one simple remedy could be to stop drinking soda drinks. It could be an inexpensive remedy compared to the $5 bn that is spend every year on fertility treatments.
Sodas and colas reduce semen quality and start early menstruation, according to other studies, and they've also been linked to weight gain and type 2 diabetes.

More than half of heart attacks never detected!

Many of us may have suffered a heart attack without ever knowing it and yet lived to tell the tale without ever taking any medication. Around 63 per cent of heart attacks (myocardial infarctions, or MIs) are never picked up in routine examinations, a new study has discovered.
Around half of those who suffer an MI without knowing it are still alive 10 years later, a similar rate to those whose heart attack had been picked up by a scan such as an electrocardiogram or cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR).
A research team from the National Institutes of Health discovered the phenomenon of the undetected heart attack when they examined the health of 935 elderly patients living in a care home in Reykjavik, Iceland, who had an average age of 76. After undergoing a heart scan, the researchers discovered that 10 per cent had suffered a heart attack that a previous scan had already identified—and yet 17 per cent of the whole group had unwittingly had a heart attack that had never been diagnosed. "That means 63 per cent of the MIs identified by CMR were missed in routine medical care. Unrecognised MI may be more common than recognised MI," said study team leader Tushar Acharya.
Yet whether or not the heart attack had been diagnosed, the survival rate was roughly the same after 10 years, at 49 per cent for an unrecognised attack and 51 per cent for a diagnosed MI.
What is surprising about the similar mortality rates is that the patient whose heart attack hasn't been diagnosed will not have been prescribed the usual medications to prevent a further attack, such as statins, beta blockers or ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors. They would also have continued with a lifestyle that could have contributed to the attack in the first place, such as smoking, not exercising or an unhealthy diet, Dr Acharya said.

Common painkillers are changing the brain!

After a mass shooting, people often suspect the perpetrator was on some medication that could have pushed him over the edge—and they could be right. Even everyday over-the-counter painkillers change the way the brain functions, and reduce empathy to others, a new study has discovered.
Common painkillers such as ibuprofen, aspirin and paracetamol alter sensitivity to painful experiences, and make the user less empathetic, and affect the way the brain processes information.
The findings are 'alarming', said researchers at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and health watchdogs should be made aware of the potential harm that the drugs—none of which need a prescription—could be doing.
"Consumers assume that when they take an over-the-counter pain medication, it will relieve their physical symptoms, but they do not anticipate broader psychological effects," said lead researcher Kyle Ratner.
In a review of previously published studies, the researchers say that the painkillers blur the distinction between physical and social pain. They don't just blunt pain, they can also "hinder people's ability to put themselves in another person's shoes, and feel that person's emotional and physical pain", the researchers say.

3 Powerful Antioxidant Supplements For Your Body!

Antioxidants are present in everyone’s bodies at all times. Some of them are made by the body itself, while some are introduced from food or antioxidant supplements. These antioxidants are important to help the body function and thrive, and so it’s important that you meet the daily recommended intake.

But it can be difficult to keep up with your nutritional intakes and to know what kind of and how many supplements you need to support cellular health. Berkeley Wellness, a magazine from the University of the same name, reports that two-thirds of Americans take at least one dietary supplement daily, a fact which has led to a massive selection of products. And because the number of options can be overwhelming, you might not know how to find the right one.

To help you in this endeavour, we’ve created an antioxidant supplements list for you to use:
GlutathioneThis is considered amongst the body’s most important antioxidant, so if you are looking to get the best antioxidant supplements benefits, this is the one you need. It is found in your cells and helps boost the ability of vitamins and other antioxidants to do their work. Glutathione helps with protein use, creates enzymes, aids in the digestion of fats, and can even help fight off cancer cells.

In addition to being one of the most popular supplements for cellular health, it’s also popular for digestive health, making it a versatile supplement that many people take daily.
QuercetinThis supplement is derived from foods like berries and leafy greens. It is safe for almost everyone and has very little risks associated with it. There are no side effects in people eating nutrient-dense diets high in quercetin or from taking supplements by mouth.
In addition, amounts up to 500 milligrams twice daily for 12 weeks appear to be very safe for helping inflammatory health problems. These include heart disease, blood vessel problems, allergies, and symptoms relating to disorders such as arthritis.
Selenium
This is a trace mineral found naturally in soil and appears in certain foods and water, though in very small amounts. It supports thyroid glands and helps protect cognition in those that take it. It may also help fight off viruses, defend against heart disease, and help with other conditions like asthma.
These supplements are just some of the most commonly used, and powerful, on the market today. Hopefully, this antioxidant supplements list is useful to you in keeping your body working like a finely-tuned machine.

MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS OFFER HOPE TO CHILDREN BORN WITH GENETIC BLOOD DISEASES!

Dr Rabi Hanna, M.D

Improved Bone Marrow Transplants, Gene Therapies, and New Medications Will Mean Longer, Healthier Lives for Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia Patients, Cleveland Clinic Physician Says
February 10th 2018, DUBAI
A series of clinical breakthroughs will revolutionize the treatment of genetic blood disorders and increase the life expectancy of children diagnosed with sickle cell disease and thalassemia, a leading physician has said.
Dr Rabi Hanna, M.D., a specialist in pediatric haematology, oncology, and blood and bone marrow transplantation at Cleveland Clinic in the United States, says significant changes in treatment are likely in the next five to 10 years, including advances in bone marrow transplant techniques, gene therapies, and improved medications.
Currently, the most common treatments, including blood transfusions and medication, only relieve the symptoms of the disease rather than provide a cure, and many patients die young. Unless they can receive a bone marrow transplant, the average life expectancy of a child diagnosed with sickle cell disease is just 34 years.
“We really have to provide a cure, and the only cure available has been bone marrow transplantation, with the best outcome from donors who are matched family – brothers and sisters,” Dr Hanna said.
“In the past few years, there have been big steps forward in haplo-transplants, using family members that are only half-matched, particularly a mum or dad with 50 percent of the child’s genes. That will give more children the chance of a cure, replacing bone marrow that is defective with new bone marrow that is healthy.”
New treatments will be particularly important in several Arab countries, where rates of both sickle cell disease and thalassemia are higher than in Europe or North America.
Both diseases cause abnormalities of the patient’s haemoglobin, the part of the red blood cells that transport oxygen.
“For thalassemia, the occurrence is much higher in the Middle East compared with the U.S., and for sickle cell disease it is slightly higher, especially in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates,” Dr Hanna said. “For thalassemia, one in every 12 in the United Arab Emirates is a carrier for the gene that causes the disease.”
Dr Hanna says trials of haplo-transplants are now in phase two and three, testing for efficacy and side-effects. Cleveland Clinic was part of an initial phased study, using modified chemotherapy to help prepare patients.
Gene therapy, using modified DNA to introduce a functional gene to replace the mutated gene causing the blood disorder, offers additional possibilities for a cure beyond bone marrow transplants.
“Early phase one studies looking at this area of gene therapy for thalassemia are very promising, although they are in the very early stages so it’s going to take time before we see them become available in a clinical setting,” said Dr Hanna.
“There are also several medications that have recently been developed for the treatment of sickle cell disease and thalassemia – two have been approved by the FDA, and others are pending. These aren’t a cure, but they can make the disease less severe.”
