Is eating fat good for you?

It's the message in several new health books: eat more fat to lose weight and gain energy.

We're definitely moving away from low-fat eating to plans that include more fat. But when it comes to which fats are healthy, there's still some controversy.

By now the word is out foods like olive oil, avocado, nuts and salmon are loaded with mono-unsaturated, or healthy fats, which are good for us.

But the new book "Smart Fat" takes the message much further.

The plan adds most fat back in, even saturated fat which was perceived to be unhealthy.

Action News spoke with co-author of the book Jonny Bowden via Skype.

"We've been terribly misled about the health risks of saturated fat," Bowden said.

He says taking fat out in the past led to people eating more high-carbohydrate and sugary foods.

"I believe it to be largely responsible for the obesity epidemic we're seeing today," Bowden said.

But he says the "Smart Fat Solution" isn't a license to chow down on burgers and fries.

The plan is broken up into four components: fat, fiber, flavor and "clean protein."

Registered dietitian Althea Zanecosky likes that "Smart Fat" encourages people to eat fewer processed foods. She says in many cases choosing the higher fat food is better.

We looked at a certain fat-free pudding, it's only 70 calories, but it has 16 grams of sugar. You're better off having more fat, less sugar.

She also likes pushing people to eat more vegetables and those well-known heart healthy foods.

But she cautions, "We still have to be careful because any fat still has calories."

For nuts, she suggests the 100-calorie packs.

For dark chocolate, keep it to one to two ounces a day.

As for the argument on saturated fat, new research has shown it may not be as harmful as once thought, but not all experts agree.

The American Heart Association still says people should limit saturated fat.

But Bowden says it's not the fat that's the problem. He believes it's the hormones, pesticides and antibiotics used on grain-fed animals.

"All of it winds up in their fat, that's what makes animal fat toxic, not the fact it comes from animals," Bowden said.

He recommends people eat grass-fed animal products whenever possible.

Many mainstream experts disagree.
"There is no good science to show grass-fed is better than conventional," Zanecosky said.

Bowden says overall the "Smart Fat Solution" will boost Omega-3s and that can help prevent inflammation and possibly disease.

He says it's not a quick fix for weight loss, but there are benefits.

"When you get the toxins out, when you get the sugar and starch out and start eating foods your body recognizes as energetic and nourishing, your entire life will change, your entire energy will change," Bowden said.

As a nurse, I suggest looking at all the information out there and find what works best for you long-term.

Cutting down on processed and sugary foods is good advice for everyone, as is eating more vegetables and healthy fats.

When it comes to saturated fat, talk to your healthcare provider about what is best for you.

Highly Nutritional Black Superfoods For This Summer

Blackberry

For many years now, green foods have always been in the limelight. Green foods like spinach, kale, broccoli, etc, have a high content of vitamins and nutrient.Black foods too are highly nutritious in nature. Black-coloured foods are also superfoods and consuming some of these foods in the summer will help to keep your body cool and fit in the scorching sun.
Experts advise that if you make these black foods a part of your summer diet, there is no way you will fall ill. Black foods are healthy because their colour hails from anthocyanins, a plant pigment that may help lower the risks of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Black foods also have a higher rate of antioxidants when compared to light-coloured foods, and this is again due to their high pigment content. Here are some highly nutritional black superfoods for this summer.

Highly nutritional black superfoods for summer are:

1.Black Rice: Brown rice should be a must add in your diet. Black rice contains more anthocyanin, which means if you consume this rice, your immunity gets doubled up. It also protects the cells from free radical damage.

2.Black Olives: Black olives are a healthy option too. These little foods contain an antioxidant that helps to prevent heart diseases and, at the same time, lowers cholesterol levels too.

3.Black Tea: Black tea is quite popular in many parts of India. It is considered as a superfood only because it contains the aflavins, which help to lower your risk of having a heart attack.

4.Black Beans: Black beans are a great source of iron. They not only help to build-up good blood cells, but they also help in lowering your risk of developing a cancer.

5.Blackberries: The polyphenols that are present in blackberries help to look after your brain. If you consume these little berries on a regular basis, as you age, you will not suffer from memory loss.

6.Black Mushroom: There is a compound in this mushroom that helps to prevent cancer. Likewise, the rich antioxidants present in black mushrooms help to boost the immunity and prevent premature ageing.

7.Black Pepper: The active compound called piperine gives the spicy taste to these corns. Pepper is filled with rich sources of iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, chromium, vitamins A and C. These little corns help in weight loss as well as prevent summer sicknesses.

8.Black Mustard: Mustard seeds should be a must add to your daily diet. These little seeds are packed with calcium that enables this amazing superfood to protect your bones and teeth.

9.Black Sesame Seeds: These little seeds are filled with protein that helps in regulating blood pressure, prevents diabetes and above all, these seeds are good for the heart.

These are the highly nutritional black superfoods for this summer.

Healthy Mind, Healthy Body

Lessons in health from an expert and mom.

Mattie, left, and Lucy Quantz enjoying stir fry. Their mother, Yvette, is a Lafayette registered dietician who believes in offering kids a variety of options when it comes to eats.

Anyone who has lived the healthy life knows it’s a mind game. Anyone who has failed at a diet or given up a week after New Year’s knows there is a connection between how we think and how healthfully we live our lives. Our children are no different.
Expert momma and nutritionist Yvette Quantz gives us the foundation for keeping our children’s minds and bodies healthy from the word go. And, yes, it starts as soon as they begin consuming food.
The first rule is simple — don’t stress. “Start with offering a variety of foods but not stressing over if they choose to eat it or not,” Quantz says.
Quantz is the mother of two and a registered dietician with Acadiana Nutrition Group, which provides “individual nutrition services for people who want to live better and feel better.” Quantz’s approach to nutrition in the mommahood is perhaps best explained in that tagline for her business. Food is about exploration for kids and about how it makes them feel.
“Let them taste and explore and teach them that what you fill your body and mind with is important in the way you live. It’s not only the foods we eat and how they make us feel but what we read and what we watch. What friends we spend time with and who lifts us up,” she says. “The food we eat directly impacts how we feel about ourselves and how we share the gifts we’ve been given in this world.”
Offer children healthy choices but don’t label foods inherently good or bad.
Avoid making food the reward from even the youngest age. Don’t ban a certain food or restrict calories. Food battles leave no winners. Digging your heels in when it comes to eating can create defiance and cause children to resist even more.
Healthy children come from healthy parents. Living healthfully is perhaps the greatest example to children of how to eat and exercise.
“It is good to take charge and ownership of our health but not to the point where we are obsessed or commenting on other people’s bodies,” Quantz says.
It’s a balancing act, but it all begins with teaching children to observe how different foods make them feel rather than how it will impact their waistline.
For example, at 9 years old, Quantz’s oldest daughter is starting to get that food can empower us to live better rather than focusing on a number on a scale.
“Do I focus better and do I think better?” Quantz asks. “She notices that when she has eggs for breakfast [something with more protein], she thinks better.” — AJH

Romagna: What fitness means to me

Fitness provides a lot of benefits. To name a few, it provides strength, cardio- respiratory endurance, flexibility, healthy weight and body composition, energy and optimal function of the body. But what does it really provide? I was recently asked that question: “What has fitness provided for you?” Well, fitness has provided me, like many others, with all the above attributes, but it’s been more than just a means to an end; it literally has been my life.
I grew up with a pool in my backyard, and when I wasn’t swimming I was shooting hoops, playing catch, making obstacle courses for my bike and putting on mock football camps in my front yard. When friends weren’t available, I did it by myself. Yes, I even played catch by myself; throwing the football high and far and trying to make the play before it hit the ground.
I was a multisport athlete throughout college and even met my wife on the track — yes, literally on the track.
Although I earned an undergraduate degree in English, I always found myself gravitating toward health and wellness. After my college sports career ended, I continued with martial arts, rugby and bodybuilding all while working in a variety of sales jobs. One day, my boss, who knew my real passion and likely sensed I was not happy, told me, “Go do what you love.”
Since that day, I have been a college strength coach, personal trainer, group fitness instructor, youth coach and for almost 10 years an instructor in the health, wellness and sport program at the University of Dubuque, and more recently the chair of the department.
To say that fitness has shaped my life is an understatement. So, what has fitness provided me?

Career

Every day, I get to share my passion for health and wellness with students in the classroom, clients in the studio and subscribers through my writing. At the risk of sounding cliché: “It’s not work if you love what you do.” At the university, we often talk about vocation and calling with our students. I have found mine.

Opportunities

Because of my experience in fitness, I have been able to share my message everywhere from the Court Reporters Convention to a sixth grade anatomy class, and many places in-between.
I’ve gotten to travel to Miami, New York and Los Angeles, places I likely would have never gone if not for fitness. I’ve met the Incredible Hulk (he’s big) and I’ve met Jack LaLanne (he’s little) and I’ve been able to bring my family to Venice Beach, Calif.

Family

As I stated, I met my wife on a track, and we have never stopped running. Fitness certainly has shaped our family.
My wife is a personal trainer and we have three girls and one boy who all value the active lifestyle. They are involved in track, football, dance, theater, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, hockey and basketball.
And, because of their involvement and busy schedules, they are good students. They, too, value fitness.

Health

Arguably, the most important thing a life of fitness has given me is health. As I tell clients, “Without health, what do you have?” I’m fortunate to be able to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and keep up (for the most part) with my kids. I’m fortunate.
This article isn’t an attempt to grandstand but rather a message to let you know that maybe fitness doesn’t have to be your life, but it can be part of your life and it will certainly change your life.

The World’s Weirdest Eating Competitions

Things are about to get weird. Om nom nom.

World’s Deep-Fried Asparagus Eating Championship in Stockton, California, USA: Every April, contestants scarf down as much deep-fried asparagus as they can in ten minutes. The prize? $2,750. The championship attracts big names, including Joey Chestnut, the number one ranked competitive eater in the world. This year Chestnut set a new world record, eating 12 pounds and 8 3/4 ounces of deep-fried asparagus.
Level of weirdness? Somewhat weird, considering that Americans are eating vegetables. But they are coated with grease, making it more understandable.

World Championship Haggis Eating Competition in Perthshire, Scotland: Each year the contest attracts competitors from the UK, US, Australia, and New Zealand. Contestants are given 1lb of the national Scottish meal, which consists of sheep innards, oatmeal, and spices. The fastest time wins.

Level of weirdness? This crap is boiled in a bag, which is traditionally an animal’s stomach. That’s weird.

Caviar Speed Eating in Moscow, Russia: In 2012, a group of caviar producers held the first-ever (and what seems to be probably the last-ever) caviar eating contest. Organisers gave each contestant half a kilogram of black caviar, valued at £800; in total, the event cost approximately £42,000. The winner finished the half a kilogram in one minute and eight seconds.

Level of weirdness? Spending £42,000 on a fish egg eating contest is not just really weird, it makes me feel cold and dead inside. THINK OF ALL THE BURGERS THEY COULD HAVE EATEN.

Fermented Soybean Eating Contest in Mito, Japan: This soybean dish, called natto, is described by the website Kotaku as “fermented beans that are slimy, sticky, and smell like socks”. Yum! The annual event is in its 13th year and has two rounds: one for men and another for women. Each group is challenged to eat 350 grams and 210 grams respectively.
Level of weirdness? If this stuff actually tastes like socks then yes, VERY, VERY, WEIRD.

Ball Eating Contest in Clinton, Montana, USA: Our number one weirdest food challenge is in the United States, the country that popularized eating challenges and morbid obesity. Held at the annual Testicle Festival, nicknamed Testy Festy, the contestant who consumes the most bull testicles in ten minutes is crowned the winner. As a spokesperson for the festival explains: “You chase [the balls] down with water, ranch, cocktail sauce, you name it, they’ve got a supply for you.”   Level of weirdness? Weird Al Yankovic would take one bite, and begin weeping because he wouldn’t be able to handle the weird.

Fast Food Chains' Sales Struggle In Wake Of Healthy Eating Trend

Heightened awareness surrounding the dangers of commercially processed food is hitting McDonald's, the number one global fast-food chain, where it hurts, their wallet.

Heightened awareness surrounding the dangers of commercially processed food is hitting McDonald's, the number one global fast-food chain, where it hurts, their wallet.

Due to a decline in company sales and an attempt to remain “relevant,” McDonald's CEO Don Thompson announced plans to provide speedier service, extend breakfast hours and prepare more “high quality,” healthier food.

In order to keep up with the “trends,” McDonald's has added several new items to their menu including chicken wraps and breakfast sandwiches made with egg whites. Unsurprisingly, the changes have failed, most likely because people interested in eating healthier food just simply aren't going to look for it at a fast-food chain, especially McDonald's.
According to the Oak Brook, Illl.-based McDonald's, guest counts fell 2 percent globally and 1.6 percent in the U.S. last year. Earnings for the number one fast-food chain reached $1.4 billion for three months ending on Dec. 31, with earnings per share totaling $1.40, just one cent more than Wall Street expected.
“McDonald's edged up 44 cents to close at $95.32. Since peaking at an all-time high of $103.70 last April, the stock has zigzagged lower and is trending closer to its 52-week low of $92.25 hit last January,” reported CBS Chicago.
The fact that the world's largest fast-food chain is considering extending their breakfast hours, shows just how badly the company is hurting. Despite persistent consumer requests to extend breakfast past 10:30 a.m. in the past, the chain refused, blaming limited kitchen space and the “logistically impossible” task of offering both the breakfast and lunch menu simultaneously.
“Still, it's an option the chain is eyeing more seriously at a time when people's eating habits are changing – particularly those coveted customers in their 20s and 30s known as Millennials,” reported WTTG Fox 5.
Head of McDonald's USA, Jeff Stratton, stated in an interview, “We know, as an example, that breakfast on the weekend cut off at 10:30 doesn’t go very well,” indicating that extending breakfast hours could increase revenue.
As far as how the company plans to implement the changes is unknown. “Well, we're just beginning. … We're just taking a look at it,” said Stratton. McDonald's representative Lisa McComb admitted that “there are no tests currently in place for the extended breakfast hours,” Fox reported.
McDonald's executives believe that customers “want foods personalized to their tastes and schedules,” and in response have created an “after midnight menu” that offers a mix of breakfast and lunch items from 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.
Another reason why the leader of morning fast food may be considering extending breakfast hours could possibly be in response to the upcoming launch of the Taco Bell breakfast menu, set to begin March 27 and lasting until 11:00 a.m.
“We can turn the breakfast conversation into a two-horse race,” said Taco Bell President Brian Niccol during an interview. He added that they plan to be a “strong No. 2″ after McDonald's, offering breakfast menu items like the “Waffle Taco,” “A.M. Crunchwrap,” “Bacon and Egg Burrito” and a “Sausage Flatbread Melt,” none of which sound like they’d be very successful in terms of meeting the needs of consumers seeking healthier food choices.
AP reports that Starbucks, also competing heavily with fast-food chains like McDonald's and Taco Bell, plans to launch “revamped breakfast sandwiches, including a croissant sandwich with ham, cheese and egg” beginning March 4.
U.S. brand and strategy officer for McDonald's Kevin Newell doesn't feel threatened by Taco Bell's plans, insisting, “I think they're going to find that going into the breakfast business is not like what they're accustomed to, in terms of marketing.”
Meanwhile, while the fast-food industry struggles, organic food farmers face strict new regulations enforced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that could potentially put them out of business.
Proposed FDA regulations would “curtail many common techniques, such as using house-made fertilizers and irrigating from creeks” as well as tilling cropland with grazing animals, reported the LA Times.
Jim Crawford, the owner of New Morning Farm, a sustainable farm that grows certified organic vegetables, berries and herbs in the mountains of south-central Pennsylvania, was recently approached by an FDA official while loading fresh tomatoes into his truck.
Crawford said the official showed him his badge and informed him that farming techniques that he's been using for nearly four decades could soon be illegal. The FDA crackdown reportedly follows pressure on the FDA to regulate farming practices more efficiently after tainted cantaloupes killed 33 last year.
“Many farmers who take part in the locally grown food movement argue that contamination is a problem of industrial-sized farms and that some of the practices the FDA might ban actually make consumers safer,” reported the LA Times.

How to Stop Using Food Like a Drug

How to Stop Using Food Like a Drug Final
You might be hard-pressed to find many people who never take advantage of the “elixir” effects food can have on us. For instance, I’d venture that the majority of us start our day with a cup of coffee or caffeinated tea. Some of us wind down after a long week with a glass of wine or a taste of our favorite bourbon. Even a small dose of sugar during times of excessive stress can lower cortisol (hence why some of us reach for an extra indulgence when things get rough). As long as we’re talking occasional or modest gratification, we can take advantage of these benefits without worry. But for some people, food becomes an ongoing coping mechanism or an unhealthy dependency to get them through their day. Where’s the line between normal indulgence and chronic “abuse” of food? And what do we do when we find ourselves sliding into risky territory?

The body is designed for us to enjoy eating. Lab animals that don’t produce dopamine die because they literally won’t eat without the internal motivation-reward boost. We’re naturally drawn to the scents and textures of food, along with the associations they offer. I sometimes think about certain meals as actual memories because they opened new territory of culinary delight.
Yet, other than a cup of coffee each day, I’m careful about how I use food. A few years ago I even kicked my nightly wine habit because I thought I might feel better without it. It wasn’t until I found a healthy workaround that I reintroduced it. I wanted to make sure I was getting the benefits, without the downsides.
And there’s the rub. When is an indulgence working against us, not for us?
Even if we glean some benefit from something (e.g., an energy boost from coffee or a drop in cortisol from a piece of chocolate), do we also experience a downside? And does our habit keep us from addressing the real lifestyle or emotional roots that are causing our discomfort? Are we relying on caffeine because we refuse to take responsibility for our poor sleep habits? Are we using sugar or any other kind of food to distract ourselves from circumstances we feel afraid or powerless to deal with?
In other words, are we using food as a stand-in for better lifestyle choices and/or honest psychological inventory?
Let me add one caveat before we dig in. The biology and psychology of full blown food addiction is beyond the scope of what I’m covering here. While some of these strategies may be similar to or part of a food addiction recovery plan, the picture is more complex at that level, and I’d refer anyone who thinks they’re beyond reining in their own behaviors to food addiction professionals.
Today I’m aiming for the “gray” area between normal eating and ongoing misuse/“abuse” of food, where I think many of us can find ourselves at one point or another.
That said, here are some tips.

Stop feeding the physiological cycle

It’s impossible to talk about using food as a drug without looking at the genuine neurological and hormonal impacts it has on the body. The fact is, certain foods affect us more like drugs than others.
With actual drug use, we’re not operating with innate satiation signaling. But with food, our bodies have a built-in system for telling us when to eat, how much to eat and when to stop.
In our paleolithic ancestors’ time, it worked great. Today, we’ve become our own saboteurs. We’ve known for years that sugary and processed foods (those that strategically combine sugar, salt and certain fats into a triple crown disaster) are intentionally designed to override our inherent satiation signals and hyper-trip our reward systems.

Unfortunately, our own body composition can work against us—leading us deeper into a cul-de-sac of poor eating choices and behaviors. Leptin is one key hormonal player in our satiety signaling. When we’re obese, we lose leptin sensitivity, and we’re drawn to eat despite being functionally full. This is where we get into trouble and the gate is open to food dependence—a phenomenon that looks strikingly similar to chemical drug dependence in neurological scans.
The physiology here could easily be its own post, and I’ve written about these issues in the past. Suffice it here to say that it’s time to kick sugar/high carb (same deal) and processed foods to the curb. You’ll be forever waging an uphill battle with these food products. Food chemists have you by the tail. Get the monkey off your back by going cold turkey or by gradually replacing these choices with healthier ones that won’t hijack your physiology. Regular readers, you know the drill. But for any newbies, take heed.

Assess your habits honestly

Coffee at 6:00, 8:00, 10:00, 1:00 and 3:00? Sweetened almond milk ice cream after dinner? Paleo-branded treat on your morning break? A superfluous energy drink after a regular intensity workout? Snacking after dinner?
Routine influences our desires. If we’ve done something again and again, we come to expect it. That little insistent voice inside us feels darn well entitled. It’s like establishing Wednesday night as movie night for the kids for six months, and then telling them this Wednesday is too nice to stick with the routine. Not that it isn’t worth shifting the schedule, but good luck handling the initial rebellion.
Acknowledge the crummy ruts for what they are, and come up with something new (and healthier) to put in their place.

Identify your psychological triggers

Identify what you’re feeling when you start raiding the cupboards or the candy machine. What’s really lacking when you pop the top off a soda? What are you trying to avoid when you’re reaching for that bag of chips?
Research shows that emotional awareness impacts our food choices. So when you start to fixate on the thought of a food or a lot of food, pay attention to what’s going on in your body, mind and environment. Observe and note for as long as you can. Get the whole 360º on that sensation. Write it down if you have to. Next time do the same thing. Keep doing it until you begin to catch that feeling before the craving hits. Then work on redirecting.

Ask where you’re stuck in life

You may find patterns in those psychological triggers. Maybe they’re the ones you’d anticipate, or maybe they surprise you. Who, what, and where tend to be associated with these triggers? This doesn’t mean you can blame your unhealthy behaviors around food on someone or something else. But it begs the question: if you’re using food to self-medicate, what exactly are you trying to medicate?
Sometimes our poor lifestyle choices are a half-conscious response to stressful or otherwise unfavorable life circumstances. The Primal strategies in these cases remain the same, but a bigger set of overarching choices come into play. We should ask the questions that feel too big to ask.

Make food substitutions (or not)

Sure, you can swap a sugar-laden “chocolate” bar for 80% dark chocolate squares, real cocoa nibs or a chocolate protein shake with a little extra pure cocoa powder mixed in. You can create Primal versions of just about every favorite comfort food you can come up with.
But…
For some people, even eating anything close to the original can send them over the edge and balloon cravings rather than satiate them. These are foods where moderation has no meaning.
Be honest about all those good intentions that never stuck with a particular food or group of foods. Lose the guilt or the nagging voice that says you “should” be able to control how much of X food you eat. What’s the point? Admit that it isn’t good for you as an individual and move on. Case closed.

Call food advertisers’ bluffs

In Grok’s day, food was food. Beyond those involved in communal ritual or those that were simply harder to come by, food didn’t come with layers of marketing hype.
I like (real) chocolate as much as the next person, but let’s be honest. If you’d never seen an ad for chocolate of any kind and never heard a cultural reference about its “powers,” would it have the same appeal? What about chips and soda? And foods from certain mostly fast food restaurants? The list could go on here. What stories do we start to believe about certain foods that only make them seem more enticing?
Stop subjecting yourself to commercials and other advertising that encourage you to think a food offers anything other than calories and nutrients (or not). And when they do come along, call them on their bluff. Contrary to what the ad made it seem like, eating a square of Dove chocolate didn’t send me into an unbridled state of euphoria.

Use routine to your advantage

Some people find it helpful to eat the same thing each day for a meal or two. Research shows habituation through exposure to less food variety can encourage people to eat less. Switch it up when you get entirely bored. But over time, your body will anticipate the taste of what it comes to expect. Make the routine healthy to make it work for you.

Eat mindfully

Eating for a “hit” of some kind means we come at food for an immediate feel-good outcome. Mindfulness reminds us the real action (and enjoyment) is in the process. How we eat can very well influence what we eat.
Consciously choose what you will eat, and bring your attention fully to the food—its preparation, its presentation and your enjoyment of it. For many people, it can feel like a ritual. Mindful eating puts us in a different relationship to what we’re eating and to the act of eating itself.
If you feel drawn to foods you know you’re trying to kick, use mindfulness to get curious about what is pulling you toward making that choice. What emotions are coming into play? Research tells us that our eating plans are dictated by rational thought, but our actual eating behaviors are driven by emotion.
Stay with the instinct and the feelings tied to it, but observe it rather than identify with it. Over time, this will help you detach from your instinct and offer some emotional room to make a better choice.

Pursue other means of feeling good

When’s the last time you did something that elicited real euphoria? How long has it been since your last vacation or weekend road trip, your last massage, your last afternoon with your best friend? Do you take substantive breaks in your day to sit in the sun or walk in the moonlight? How often do you listen (or make) live music or dance or have sex or make a fool of yourself just for the fun of it? Would you be good company for Grok, or do you bore yourself these days?
When we routinely keep ourselves on too short a leash—forgoing the thrill of unplanned/planned adventures, taking for granted or never leaving meaningful time for our closest relationships, neglecting to practice hobbies, visit the places or read the books we love—we’ll settle for that cheap substitute of a food craving.
So whether you’re looking to stop abusing clearly unhealthy foods, or even primal-approved indulgences, I hope these tips can help.
That’s it for today, everyone. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject, since I know most of us have some experience with it. How do you manage the healthy use of food?

How To Test For Low or High Stomach Acid in Seconds With Apple Cider Vinegar

In the last decade, dark chocolate has become extremely popular, due to the fact that it is rich in iron, potassium, selenium, copper, fiber, zinc magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus.
Therefore, it became the choice number one whenever we felt like craving for something sweet when we felt anxious, depressed, frustrated, in the case of obesity and diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
And it seems that dark chocolate was perfect for almost every situation! We said almost, as it is not beneficial in the case of one condition.
Acid reflux, or heartburn and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), is a condition which leads to pain in the chest, sore throat, a burning sensation in the throat, stomach, and even mouth. It can be very uncomfortable and stressful, and the pain can ruin important evenings and dinners.
Acid reflux can be caused by excess stomach acid, as well as reduced amounts of stomach acid in the body, weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES), and obstruction of the upper bowels.
The LES can be weakened by the following foods:
  • Alcohol
  • Nicotine
  • Peppermint
  • Fish oil (dietary and supplementary)
  • Caffeine
  • Certain medications (ie. SSRI, hormonal treatments)
  • Tomatoes
  • Citrus fruits and juices (lemon, lime, orange, etc.)
  • Chocolate
Namely, chocolate has been found to reduce the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure, and this condition is known as “Chocolate-Induced Reflux”.
The LES is the muscle which binds the esophagus to the stomach, and it opens in order to allow the food and drinks to go into the stomach and closes in order to prevent their return.
If it is weakened, it leaves the food and drinks to return back and lead to irritation. Moreover, it can also be weakened due to an intestine obstruction or even small intestinal bowel overgrowth (SIBO).
If left untreated, acid reflux can lead to a damage of the mucosal membrane, as well as cancer and ulcers. Therefore, you should always chew your food well, eat in a relaxed state, and do not consume trigger foods.
If the signs of an acid reflux are mild, you would probably not go to check the state at the doctor, and examine whether the reason is too much or too low stomach acid. However, there is a test you can perform, and you will need only one thing- apple cider vinegar.
This is how to perform it:
  1. Swallow a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  2. In the case you feel no burning sensation, the reason is hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid). In this case, you should increase the levels by subsequently adding 1 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily until you reach 6 tablespoons or a slight burning sensation occurs.
  3. In the case you experience no symptoms, you should maintain that dose and every day decrease it by one tablespoon unless you experience a burning sensation.
  4. In case you feel extreme burning and irritation after the consumption of the first tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, then you are suffering from hyperchlorhydria (excess stomach acid).
Note that you should consult your doctor and do the needed tests in order to make sure that the burning pain is not a symptom of a peptic ulcer or a heart condition.
Low Stomach Acid
  • In the case of a low stomach acid, you should follow these steps:
  • Always chew the food well
  • After big meals, make sure you take digestive enzymes
  • You should increase the intake of pineapple and papaya due to the natural bromelain and papain enzymes
  • Continue dosing 1 – 6 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily in the case you do not feel any burning
  • Massage the abdominal area to stimulate gastric secretions
  • When you eat, take 3 deep breaths before the meal and smell your food, as the nose is the first step I digestion and it stimulates the secretion of saliva in the mouth and digestive enzyme release from the pancreas
  • Deal with stress, by exercising, deep breathing techniques, meditation, walks in nature.
High Stomach Acid
In the case of a high stomach acid, you should follow these steps:
  • Every day, add 1-2 teaspoons of sodium bicarbonate in a full glass of water
  • You should not lie down immediately after meals
  • Eat a few hours before going to sleep
  • Lose weight and exercise regularly
  • In order to relieve the gastric pressure and stress, regularly perform an abdominal and upper body massage
  • Make sure you sleep more and your head should be a bit lifted
  • When you eat, take 3 deep breaths before meals
  • You should take acid suppression pharmaceutical agents (antacid calcium carbonate, Proton pump inhibitor H2-receptor antagonist, etc)
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Consume smaller meals and foods, like smoothies, which are easy to digest
  • Manage stress, by meditation, exercise, reading books, swimming, gratitude, etc.
  • Do not consume acidic foods (meat, vinegar, citrus fruits), avoid carbonated beverages and food triggers (chocolate, spicy food, tomatoes, pineapple, papaya, caffeine, alcohol, etc)and smoking for 1 week, and then again assess the intensity of discomfort
This condition can be mixed with lung conditions, peptic ulcers, musculoskeletal issues, and serious heart conditions.
Therefore, if you have noticed bleeding through the mouth or stool, chronic discomfort, or unexplained pain, you should immediately visit your doctor.
Moreover, if you have been using acid suppressing pharmaceuticals for some time now, and you would like to try some other natural alternative, you can seek help from a Naturopathic doctor.
Yet, you should never quit or start using certain medications on your won, as your body should be prepared for the elimination of medications and the introduction of the new alternative therapy.
