Deadly Mistakes: Medical Errors Are 3rd Leading Cause of Death

By Sara G. Miller
Medical errors may be the third leading cause of death in the United States, a new review suggests. But you wouldn't realize that fact by looking at the latest U.S. mortality statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the researchers for the new study said.
The review showed that about 251,000 deaths in 2013 stemmed from medical errors, placing this cause third behind heart disease (with about 611,000 deaths) and cancer (with 584,000 deaths). The next most common cause of death after medical errors was chronic lower respiratory infection, which accounted for nearly 150,000 deaths that year, the researchers found.
But because of how deaths are currently reported in the U.S., medical errors are rarely listed as the cause of death, said the review, published today (May 3) in the journal BMJ.

No-Bake Chocolate Fudge Cookies

Vegan, gluten-free, no bake/raw, nut-free, refined sugar-free, soy-free
These no-bake fudge cookies are my quick and easy solution when a chocolate craving strikes! I start with a homemade coconut oil chocolate base (made even creamier with sunflower seed butter!), and add chia seeds for healthy Omega-3 fats, shredded coconut for a hint of macaroon flavor and texture, and of course rolled oats for the classic no-bake cookie ingredient. The cookies will soften a great deal at room temperature, so I recommend enjoying them straight from the fridge.

Yield

Total Time
10 Minutes

Ingredients:

For the wet ingredients:
  • 3 tablespoons (45 mL) virgin coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons (30 mL) sunflower seed butter*
  • 1/4 cup (20 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) pure maple syrup, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
For the dry ingredients:
  • 7 tablespoons (50 g) gluten-free rolled oats
  • 6 tablespoons (35 g) unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 2 tablespoons (25 g) chia seeds
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt, or to taste

Directions:

  1. Line a large plate with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a medium pot, melt the coconut oil over low heat. Whisk in the sunflower seed butter, cocoa powder, and maple syrup until smooth. Remove the pot from the heat and whisk in the vanilla.
  3. Add the oats, coconut, chia seeds, and salt into the pot and stir well until combined. The mixture will be thick, dense, oily, and gel-like (from the chia seeds), but this is normal. Swear.
  4. Using a retractable ice cream scoop (approximately 2 tablespoons/30 mL) or simply a spoon, scoop the dough and place the mound onto the plate, leaving a bit of space between each cookie.
  5. Place the cookies in the freezer to set for about 10 to 15 minutes, until firm, or simply chill in the fridge if you have the patience.
  6. Store leftover cookies in an airtight container in the fridge for 1 week, or freeze them for up to 4 to 6 weeks. These cookies have the best texture/flavour straight from the fridge (rather than the freezer) so I prefer to store them in the fridge.

Tips:

  • * Instead of sunflower seed butter, feel free to use natural peanut butter or almond butter. I also recommend stirring the nut or seed butter very well before measuring (if it has oil on the top) to avoid oily cookies.

Why Are Human Babies So Helpless?

by Mindy Weisberger, Senior Writer

Some animals come into this world more self-sufficient than others.
Many can fend for themselves without any parental supervision almost immediately — picture baby sea turtles hatching on the sand and then somehow finding their way to the ocean.
Other animals, like newborn giraffe calves, are able to clamber upright and walk around on their own within hours of birth.

Human babies, however, are a different story.

For the first two months of life, they can't lift their heads without help. They usually roll over for the first time at about 4 months, and sit up at around 6 months. They usually start standing at about 9 months, and take their first tentative steps at around 1 year old, according to infant developmental milestones compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
But even then, babies are just getting started. Fine-tuning the most basic survival skills, such as walking and feeding themselves, takes at least another year or more, and the little ones generally remain dependent on parents or caregivers for well over a decade before they're even able to begin to navigate parts of the world on their own.
And that's OK, experts say. The extra time that humans need to acquire these abilities is part of the evolutionary trade-off for having highly developed brains capable of managing complex reasoning, communication and social interaction, alongside the physical requirements and capabilities of our adult bodies.

Leaving the nest

When animals produce self-sufficient young, it's for a number of reasons related to both biology and behavior, according to John Dumbacher, a curator of ornithology and mammalogy at the California Academy of Sciences.

Some animals need their young to be mobile as quickly as possible — in water or on land — because adults are constantly on the move and the young need to keep up (or keep away from predators). Other species that don't roam as widely hunker down with helpless young in their nests or burrows.
And there can be a lot of variation among animals from the same group.
Take birds, for example. "Songbirds — robins, bluebirds — those tend to be born more or less naked, with their eyes closed, and they can't do much more than lifting up their heads and getting a meal from their parents," Dumbacher told Live Science.
Newly hatched chickens, on the other hand, are much more capable of taking care of themselves. "They have downy feathers; they can walk around; they can peck at the ground," Dumbacher said. And ducks, he added, can hop into the water shortly after hatching and swim after their mother.
The variety and the hatchling's ability can be partly explained by the size of the adult bird, Dumbacher said, which translates into the maximum size of the egg it can lay. Bigger-bodied ducks, chickens and geese can lay larger eggs that hold more nutrients, so an embryo can spend more time developing inside. Songbird eggs are already as large as they can be relative to the parents' body size, so their young are born in a less-developed state and require more time under the parents' wings, Dumbacher added.

Biology and behavior

There is similar variability in mammals, Dumbacher said. Although all mammal newborns are dependent on their mothers for nutrition, some are more physically capable as newborns than others.
Foals can stand up and walk independently soon after birth because adult female horses are big enough, and can gestate long enough, for their young to develop substantially before birth, making them more physically capable even as newborns, Dumbacher explained.
However, shrews — like songbirds — are born nearly naked and with closed eyes, and must be kept warm by a nest and their mother's body heat.
"With its high metabolic rate and a small body size, it's hard for something like a shrew to carry a baby for a long period of time," Dumbacher said.

Physical and metabolic limitations also apply to human gestation and birth, according to a study published in 2012.

It was already known that the brains — and skulls — of developing babies can't grow bigger than they do in the womb (on average) because they wouldn't fit through the mother's pelvis. The study found that a nine-month gestation period (again, on average) is likely the longest that a woman could safely sustain the accelerated metabolic rate required during pregnancy.
But self-sufficiency of mammal newborns is dependent on more than a species' size and metabolic rate, Dumbacher added. "It's also determined by the ecology of the species, and how much of their behavior can be coded in instinct versus how much has to be learned from their parents," he said.
In other words, the more information about behavior that a juvenile has to absorb from adults of its own kind, the more important the role of long-term parental care is in integrating a young newcomer into the patterns and practices of the group.
That starts to explain the long road that a human baby must travel from helpless newborn, to child, to adult, considering how much they need to learn from their parents about communication and social behavior.

Slow and steady

The lengthy development process that humans experience is "a luxury," said Marianella Casasola, an associate professor in the Department of Human Development at Cornell University. And it extends even later in life than experts once thought.
"There's a lot of development that goes on in the prefrontal cortex [of the brain] even into early adulthood," Casasola told Live Science.
Though it may seem like humans' early physical capabilities lag behind those of other animals as newborns, in the long run, humans' lengthy period of relative helplessness eventually delivers a substantial cognitive payoff.

"We know that things evolve in a certain way because there's an advantage to it," Casasola told Live Science. "The longer maturation rate allows us to develop much more complex thinking."

10 Foods That Unclog Arteries Naturally And Protect Against Heart Attack

Nature has created numerous natural foods that can help us maintain our good health, detox it and prevent numerous diseases. Thus, it also contains foods which can help you unclog your arteries and promote heart health!

These foods are the following:
Green Tea
This tea is rich in catechins, which impede the cholesterol absorption during digestion. Therefore, the consumption of 1-2 cups of green tea will prevent the blockage of arteries and enhance the blood-lipid levels. It will also stimulate your metabolism, promote heart health and help you lose excess weight.
Pomegranate
Pomegranate includes phytochemicals which have antioxidant properties and prevent damage of the lining of arteries.  Its juice triggers the production of nitric oxide, which keeps the arteries open and supports the blood flow!
Turmeric
Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, and it alleviates inflammation, which is the greatest cause of arteriosclerosis — the hardening of the arteries.
Therefore, its introduction in your regular diet will reduce the risk of blood clotting and it will lower the damage to arterial walls.
Avocados
You can add some avocado to your burgers and sandwiches, instead of mayo. According to researchers, it daily use will improve your blood cholesterol, as it will reduce LDL, and elevate HDL cholesterol levels.
The latter helps the arteries to prevent obstructions.
Broccoli
Broccoli is high in vitamin K, which prevents calcium from damaging the arteries, and it also includes fiber, which reduces blood pressure and cholesterol.
Asparagus
This natural artery-clearing food will promote cardiovascular health as it prevents blood clots and reduces blood pressure. It is high in minerals and fiber, and vitamin C, B2, K, B1, and E.
Spirulina
Spirulina is a blue-green algae which effectively regulates blood’s lipid levels, and is rich in proteins which include all essential amino acids for an optimal health. It stabilizes the blood pressure and relaxes the artery walls, and at the same time, balances the fat levels in the blood.
Cranberries
Cranberries are high in antioxidants, which lower the LDL and elevate HDL cholesterol levels. The daily consumption of the juice of cranberries will lower the risk of heart disease by 40%!
Persimmon
Persimmons are abundant in antioxidants and polyphenols, which lower LDL and triglycerides. They are also high in fiber, which helps the regulation of blood pressure and maintains the arteries clean.
Cinnamon
This delicious spice can help to reduce cholesterol levels while clearing out plaque and preventing further build-up. Cinnamon is full of antioxidants which improve cardiovascular health by protecting blood from oxidation.
Sprinkle some in your coffee, on your toast, or on just about any other food to spice it up a little and reap the benefits!

God Himself Sent It To People: Antibiotic, Antioxidant, Cleans The Bloodstream, Destroys Cholesterol

Basil (lat. Ocimum basilicum) is a plant with green, oval leaves and specific aroma. It can be of 6 different species, which have distinct taste and appearance.
Basil has powerful antioxidant properties which promote a healthy diet and lifestyle, as they protection from free radicals damage, cancer, and prevent aging.
god-sent-people-antibiotic-antioxidant-cleans-bloodstream-destroys-cholesterol
Beta-carotene is one of these antioxidants, which is turned into vitamin A in the body. It prevents the oxidation of cholesterol and protects the heart and blood vessels.
It also prevents rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, osteoarthritis, which are often the result of free radicals. Basil can offer numerous health benefits, such as:
Natural antibiotic
According to scientific research, basil boosts the immune system. It has powerful antiseptic and antibacterial properties, and thus treats various bacterial infections.
Protects the heart and blood vessels
This plant is high in vitamin B6 and magnesium. Magnesium prevents heart attacks and strengthens the cardiovascular system.
B6 prevents the accumulation of harmful ingredients, like homocysteine. Moreover, it lowers the risk of arrhythmia and provides relaxation of the muscles.
Basil in cooking
Basil is an extremely important condiment in numerous cuisines around the world. This is due to the fact that it goes well with various dishes.
However, note that you should add basil at the very end of the preparation process, in order to preserve its taste. Moreover, make sure to use it fresh, in order to obtain a stronger flavor.  Therefore, it is often used in cooking.
The basil tea is extremely healthy and delicious. You should pour some hot water over some chopped basil leaves, cover the pot and leave it thus for 8 minutes. Afterward, strain it and enjoy it!
It can also be used in the preparation of ide desserts. You should chop basil and mix it with lemon juice. Then, add some water and sugar cane juice, and freeze it in ice cubes.
Then, blend the ice cubes in a blender and serve it as an ice dessert in a Mediterranean style. You can combine it with some fresh, Italian salad of tomato, mozzarella, and fresh basil.
Yet, the most popular basil dish is pesto Genovese’s. It is prepared with pine nuts, green basil sauce, and Parmesan cheese. Prepare the sauce using olive oil, garlic, and chopped basil. Serve it with rice, pasta, and brochette.

The Gain Without (Shoulder) Pain Workout

The Gain Without Pain Workout
No pain, no gain! Everybody is familiar with this expression. But if you suffer discomfort during a shoulder workout, it could spell trouble. What starts as a twinge can soon get worse, yet many gymgoers ignore it until the pain becomes intolerable.
It’s a familiar tale. Shoulder injuries are among the most common in the gym and often require lengthy rehabilitation or surgery. Well-intentioned but harmful advice often makes matters worse.
The bottom line is that the shoulder is a complex joint. It’s worth taking time to learn the basics and following the steps necessary to prevent your gains from being compromised by injury.

The shoulder is the most flexible joint in the body, but the flip side is, it’s also one of the less stable.
I say “joint,” but it is not actually a single joint. It is the articulation between the head of the humerus bone on the upper arm and the glenoid fossa socket on the shoulder. It’s often likened to a golf ball resting on a rather large tee. The joint is designed for maximum mobility to allow a broad spectrum of upper-body movement, but this inherent instability is at the root of many problems.
The rotator cuff is crucial because it stabilizes the shoulder. Most shoulder injuries affect the rotator cuff, and the purpose of most rehab work is to strengthen it.
The rotator cuff consists of four muscles that can be remembered by the acronym SITS: supraspinatus, infra-spinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. These muscles originate from different parts of the scapula (shoulder blade) and insert into the humeral head, converging together into a tendinous “cuff ” around the joint.
Problems usually occur when tight internal shoulder rotators pull the humeral head forward and inward. If the external shoulder rotators are weak, they are unable to counteract this force, and this leads to pain in the rotator cuff.
Although the pain is felt in the shoulder, the root of the problem is usually more widespread. The chest, back, and biceps muscles all traverse the shoulders, so every upper-body workout activates the rotator cuff to some extent. Unfortunately, many of the exercises we do for these body parts cause internal shoulder rotation. There is a mismatch between the internal and external shoulder rotators. Guys who hammer their pecs and lats are potentially storing up problems by overtraining their internal rotators and neglecting their external rotators.

Evidence

1. Studies testing the rotator cuff strength of patients with shoulder impingement syndrome consistently show muscular imbalances between external rotator and internal rotator muscles of the injured shoulder.
2. Significant decreases in electrical activity in the supraspinatus and infra-spinatus rotator cuff muscles were found in subjects with shoulder impingement syndrome compared with uninjured subjects.
3. A number of studies have measured the strength ratio of the external rotators and internal rotators in healthy uninjured subjects. They report that one should be at least 60 to 70% as strong as the corresponding muscle group. So if your internal rotators can lift a weight of 10 pounds, your external rotators should be able to pull a weight of between 6.5 and 7.5 pounds to prevent muscular imbalances.

Golden Rules

1. Do not ignore shoulder pain. Training through it will lead to more serious injury, which will require longer and more invasive treatment. If you experience pain, incorporate rest and a modification period into your program to keep the muscles from grating and teach them how to be exercised safely.
2. Be wary of exercises that require excessive internal rotation of the shoulder, such as front raises, lateral raises with thumbs down, and upright rows. These moves put the supraspinatus muscle in a potentially compromised position.
3. Strengthen your middle and lower trapezius and rhomboids to increase shoulder blade stability. Try reverse flyes with straight elbows to hit the middle traps.
4. Keep external rotators strong and internal rotator muscles flexible to avoid a poor internal/external strength ratio, which results in the humeral head pulling forward. Regular stretching after workouts helps.

Try This Workout

If you search for rotator cuff exercises on the Internet, a plethora of generic moves appears. The exercises here don’t cover everything, but they are the most effective moves for guys looking to improve their range of motion and the strength of their rotator cuff and scapula.
The rotator cuff is composed of a similar number of slow and fast-twitch muscle fibers, so your aim should be to increase muscular endurance, and you should vary the tempo. Resist the urge to go heavy: This program is about preventing injury rather than hypertrophy, so it’s a short-term measure that will allow you to gain without pain afterward.
