Sulforaphane and quercetin are natural compounds that help improve cellular health

Scientists have known for some time that antioxidants including sulforaphane and quercetin are potent substances for protecting cellular health. Now they have discovered a mechanism by which these substances activate a special protective protein, in a study conducted by researchers from the University of Warwick and published in the journal Antioxidants & Redox Signalling.

The findings may lead to the identification or development of new superfoods to help prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, the researchers said.

The findings center on the activity of a protein known as Nrf2, which is consistently moving into and out of the nuclei of human cells in order to monitor their health and vitality. When a cell's health is threatened, Nrf2 begins to oscillate in and out of the cell more rapidly, which appears to stimulate cellular defense mechanisms and lead to an increase in cellular antioxidant levels.

"The way Nrf2 works is very similar to sensors in electronic devices that rely on continual reassessment of their surroundings to provide an appropriate response," lead researcher Paul Thornalley said.

Antioxidants increase sensor's effectiveness

In the new study, researchers found that, under normal circumstances, Nrf2 oscillates in and out of a given cell nucleus at a rate of one oscillation per 129 minutes. When exposed to the antioxidant chemicals sulforaphane and quercetin, Nrf2's oscillation rate increased to 80 minutes per oscillation.

Sulforaphane is an antioxidant found abundantly in broccoli, while quercetin is found in high levels in onions and apples.

The findings suggest that the presence of these antioxidants actually increases the effectiveness of Nrf2, which should in turn make cells more resistant to damage, including oxidative damage.

"The health benefit of Nrf2 oscillating at a fast speed is that surveillance of cell health is increased when most needed, that is, when cells are under threat," Thornalley said. "By understanding how this process works and increasing Nrf2's speed without putting cells under threat, new strategies for design of healthier foods and improved drugs can be devised. Current designs may have selected substances with suboptimal if not poor health benefits in some cases."

The researchers have already used their findings to develop new food supplements, which are currently being tested for their effectiveness at reducing diabetes and heart disease risk.

EU-funded BIOCLAIMS research program coordinator Andreu Palou, who was not involved in the study, said that the findings may help consumers select healthier foods.

Super-ingredients make superfoods

One of the main drivers of the cellular damage that leads to the effects of aging and to chronic diseases is believed to be oxidative damage by free radical compounds that circulate in the body in response to environmental stress (including exposure to toxins or just normal metabolic processes). By removing these free radicals from the body, antioxidants are believed to reduce the risk of these conditions.

Research has backed this up, linking antioxidant consumption to a lowered risk of heart disease and cancer, and to lower levels of inflammation and inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. Antioxidants have also been shown to prevent oxidation of LDL ("bad") cholesterol and reduce arterial inflammation.

Quercetin specifically has been linked to lower blood pressure, reduced heart disease risk and protection from the oxidizing effects of cadmium toxicity. Sulforaphane has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, and may help keep immune function from declining with age.

Energize with this Raw Superfood Breakfast Recipe!

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup Raw Hulled Buckwheat (soaked overnight, strained and rinsed in the morning)
  • 1 cup Dried Coconut Flakes (unsweetened)
  • 1 cup Seeds/Chopped Nuts: mix any Hemp, Sunflower, Pumpkin, Jungle Peanuts, Pecans, Walnuts, Almonds, Brazil Nuts
  •  1/2 cup Dried Fruit (Goji Berries, Currants, Raisins – all unsulphured and without hydrogenated oils)
  • 1–2 tbsp Raw Honey or Maple Syrup
Optional:
  • 2 tbsp. Coconut Oil (to lower glycemic index and stabilize blood sugars)
  • 1 tsp. Spirulina
  • 1–2 tbsp. Raw Cacao Powder
  • 1–2 scoops Protein Powder
  • 1–2 tbsp. Maca Powder
  •  Orange or Lemon zest
Directions:
1. Take 1 cup raw buckwheat (also called groats) and rinse under cold water. Place in large glass bowl and cover with 6 cups of water. Leave on counter overnight or for at least 6 hours, to begin the germination process.
2. In the morning, or 6 hours later, strain buckwheat with fine strainer and rinse well.
Note: Buckwheat will appear slightly slimy.
3. Ensure buckwheat is well rinsed and patted dry with paper bowl. Leave in fine strainer or sprouting tray (can be purchased online or in health food stores) with a bowl underneath for 24 hours to sprout or proceed to step 4 immediately.
4. In a large bowl, mix soaked/sprouted buckwheat with 1 cup of coconut flakes, 1 cup of nuts or seeds, 1/2 cup dried fruit, and 1-2 tablespoons sweetener plus any other additional toppings.
5. Enjoy with your favourite homemade dairy-free milks, yogurts or creams and fresh fruit! Store covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.

The rise of the superfood began in the 1990s and has grown to include a dizzying array of foods, everything from the Peruvian grain quinoa to the ancient European vegetable kale but not everyone agrees we really need them.
A fruit that can make you thin? That is the gospel according to growers of Australia's Queen Garnet plum - a "freak" stone fruit with extraordinarily high levels of anthocyanin.
Anthocyanin is the pigment that gives plums, strawberries and blueberries their deep blush.
It is also a class of antioxidant - a compound that reduces oxidative stress in living cells, and which has been investigated for its role in preventing or helping fight disease.
The Queen Garnet came under the spotlight in February when the fruit's praises were sung by popular ABC TV show Landline.
The programme detailed new research by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) that produced evidence of the berry's weight-loss potential.
A flurry of positive rural newspaper reports followed, prompting a rush of consumer interest in the Queen Garnet.
Pricey plums
Superfood status can be measured in dollars. Western consumer demand for quinoa, for example, has sent export prices in Peru soaring.
Experts warn that no single food item is a panacea and that there has been a long line of supposed superfoods with health claims that have been found wanting.
The Maqui berry of Chile and the goji berry of China are textbook examples, with producers linking these ancient foods to myriad and sometimes dubious health claims.

The Queen Garnet plum story is a little different. It was accidentally created by plant breeders trying to make a disease-resistant version of the common Japanese plum for the Queensland government a decade ago.
Then researchers at USQ took a closer look at the plum's positive properties. They fed rats a diet high in fats and carbohydrates until they were obese.
Then they added a few drops of Queen Garnet plum juice to the rats' drinking water, while exercising the rats half an hour a day. Within eight weeks, the rats had shed most of their excess weight.
That research, coupled with the Queen Garnet's reputedly deliciously sweet flesh proved a public relations masterstroke for farming co-op Nutrafruit, which paid the Queensland Government for the global license to commercialise the fruit.
But how much weight should be placed on scientific research conducted on rats? USQ Biomedical Sciences Professor Lindsay Brown, who led the research, says the results make a strong case for the Queen Garnet's health claims and for further funding for human trials.
"All the changes that rats experience with obesity - glucose levels, cardiovascular functions, inflammation - all those occur the same way in humans," Prof Brown told the BBC, adding: "The plums taste really nice."
Too good to be true?
However, others are more cautious.
Professor Manny Noakes, research director for nutrition and health at the Australian science agency CSIRO, says it is not a clear-cut case.
"It's very good research and very interesting research," says Prof Noakes.
"But when I last checked, humans and rodents were very different. You can feed rats an entire diet to test a hypothesis but that doesn't mean you'll get the same results in humans.
"To make a claim that the consumption of a food will make a difference to people's weight is a pretty long bow to cast.
"Unfortunately, this is something that happens a lot when it comes to promoting the health benefits of food. Similar claims have been made by research on animals using everyday grape seeds."

USQ's research on the Queen Garnet was partly funded by the Queensland government. However, consumers need to beware of food manufacturers who publish self-funded scientific research on the weight-loss properties of their products, says Charles Fisher, a principal at food regulatory specialist Food Legal.
Mr Fisher says about 10 manufacturers have done so since Food Standards Australia New Zealand legalised the practice in 2013.
"From a legal perspective there is a big gap between what consumers understand when they hear the word 'antioxidant' and what the scientific reality may be." he notes.
Critics of cultivated fruit such as the Queen Garnet argue native fruits such as lemon myrtle can deliver even higher levels of anthocyanins.
But Nutrafruit director Hugh Macintosh says indigenous foods are extremely difficult to commercialise.
"There are many fruits out there with high levels of antioxidants but they have to be harvested in the wild so the supply is unreliable, whereas we've been growing plums for a long time so know how to do it consistently," says Mr Macintosh.
"Our plums may not be as sexy as something found in the Amazon but they're something most of us have been eating all our lives and they have a lot of potential," the Nutrafruit director adds.

  1. Absolutely no adverse effects were experienced from both seaweed varieties and the combination.
  2. CD4 cells (T-helper white blood cells that fight infection and are used to stage HIV) and HIV-1 viral load (another HIV biomarker) remained stable.
The results were so promising that one participant volunteered to continue the study for an additional 10 months, and this participant actually benefited from “clinically significant improvement in CD4 and decreased HIV viral load”!

In the study above, researchers also discovered that the spirulina supplementation lowered intimal aorta surface by 33% to 48%, which suggests that it can prevent atherosclerosis and subsequent stroke. (17)

Because they are both similar microalgae species, it’s easy to understand how scientists confused spirulina with chlorella back in the 1940s. In spite of their stark differences, people commonly mistake one for the other even today. Here are the four main differences that are important to understand:
1. Shape
First of all, spirulina is a spiral-shaped, multi-celled plant with no true nucleus. It’s blue-green in hue and can grow up to 100 times the size of chlorella. Comparably, chlorella is a spherical-shaped single-celled microorganism with a nucleus and is solid green.
2.  How It’s Grown
Second, the growing conditions differ considerably. Spirulina grows best in low-alkaline conditions — particularly, fresh water lakes, ponds and rivers. It also requires an abundance of sunshine and moderate temperatures.
Chlorella, on the other hand, grows in fresh water typically occupied by other organisms, which makes it more challenging to harvest.
3. Preparation
Third, the ways in which both spirulina and chlorella can be eaten are also very different. Because of its hard, indigestible cellulose wall, for instance, chlorella requires mechanical processing to make it worthwhile for human consumption. Otherwise, the body won’t be able break down and metabolize its nutrients.
The process can be quite costly, which explains why chlorella is usually more expensive than spirulina. On the other hand, spirulina has a completely digestible cellulose wall and can be immediately consumed and digested with ease.
4. Nutrition
Finally, although both are considered superfoods, spirulina and chlorella differ in their nutritional content. Arguably the healthier of the two, spirulina contains more essential amino acids, iron, protein, B vitamins, and vitamins C, D and E.
With that said, chlorella still holds an abundance of health benefits. My personal go-to, however, is spirulina.
