toothpaste_on_brush

Searching for the right substitute for toothpastes which is also loaded with fluoride, sulfates, and other such bacteria killers? If yes, then scientific research has some great news for you: A natural ingredient can do wonders to your oral health. This natural ingredient is the coconut oil, better known as magical oil that is full of “miracle” powers. What makes it unique is that it is not only useful to fight tooth decay, but is known as a killer that crushes the yeast, candida albicans from your mouth. This yeast is said to be dangerous, and can cause deadly infections.
Though natural health professionals have been suggesting coconut oil since decades, there is enough of research that proves this natural tooth remedy well.
Treatment for Candida Albicans
Conducted in the Athlone Institute of Technology, some researchers from Ireland examined the after-effects of digested and natural coconut oil on some common bacteria strains existing in the mouth. They came up with some amazing findings: The coconut oil could effectively reduce the majority of bacteria strains, and was also proven to be a good source to eliminate candida albicans from the mouth. Since this harmful yeast, candida albicans comes into existence because of the intake of excessive sugar and processed foods, it is crucial to get a solid solution to get rid of this yeast. And yes, the coconut oil is proven to be the right solution to this.
A Remedy for the “Candy Disease”
Also known as the Candida overgrowth, this candy disease or the Candida infection can be related with various symptoms such as chronic tiredness, digestive issues, and frequent yeast infections. Though patients suffering from the candy disease may know about its treatment already, they can also look forward to using coconut oil for the same. Keeping this in consideration, researchers have been highlighting the usefulness of coconut oil as the alternative for medicines related to dental treatments.
In the report, scientists have reported that this natural oil can be one of the best alternatives to chemical dental products that include added fluoride and different sulfate chemicals.
What to Consider When Buying the Best Coconut Oil
Now that you know about the potential contribution of using coconut oil as natural cure to various dental diseases, it is essential to ensure that you have purchased the right coconut oil. You have two choices, i.e. to buy high-quality, 100% organic coconut oil online, or from a reputable local store. Though the choice is yours, you need to make sure that you buy the right one.
Here are some useful tips to get the most from the purchase of coconut oil:
1. Check the labeling of the coconut oil brand. Is it USDA certified? If yes, then this indicates that it is a reliable brand.
2. It should be cold-pressed, unrefined, and 100% organic.
Many people are still not aware of the use of coconut oil as a dental treatment. However, there is still a lot to research on this interesting finding.

Fats Found In Coconut Oil Boost Brain Function In Only One Dose

Written by Sayer Ji
Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), the primary type of fat found within coconut oil, have been found to boost cognitive performance in older adults suffering from memory disorders as serious as Alzheimer’s — and not after months or even days of treatment, but after a single 40 ml dose!
A groundbreaking 2004 study published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging found that the administration of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), the primary fat type found in coconut oil, almost immediately improved cognitive function in older adults with memory disorders.
The study involved 20 subjects with Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment who, on separate days, were given either emulsified MCTs or a placebo.  The researchers observed a significant increase in blood plasma levels of the ketone body beta-hydroxylutyrate (beta-OHB) after only 90 minutes of treatment, and depending on the apolipoprotein E genotype of the subject tested, beta-OHB levels either continued to rise or held constant between the 90 and 120 minute blood draws in the treatment condition. Remarkably, cognitive testing revealed that this brief MCT treatment facilitated improved performance on the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-cog) in 4 subjects within the study group. Moreover, “higher ketone values were associated with greater improvement in paragraph recall with MCT treatment relative to placebo across all subjects (P=0.02).”[i]
The details of the study procedure was described as follows:
The study was conducted with a double-blind placebo controlled design with two study visits. During each visit, subjects received one of two isocaloric conditions (690calories) in a randomized order: emulsified MCTs, or emulsified long chain triglycerides as a placebo. NeoBee 895 (Stepan, Inc.) was used for MCTs. To increase palatability, heavy whipping cream was used as a source of long chain triglycerides and as a source of long chain mono- and di-glycerides for emulsification. MCTs (40ml) were blended with 152ml heavy whipping cream to create the emulsified test sample. Heavy whipping cream alone (232ml) was blended to create the placebo.
Subjects fasted from 8:00 p.m. on the night prior to the study visit. They arrived in the morning and blood was drawn to determine plasma β-OHB levels and APOE genotyping (first visit only). Subjects then consumed the test beverage and rested quietly for 90min, after which blood was drawn and a 30-min cognitive testing session ensued. After testing, a final blood draw was taken.

How Medium Chain Triglycerides Work

How could a single dose of MCTs (40 ml or 2.7 tablespoons) cause an almost immediate improvement in cognitive performance in those suffering from cognitive impairments as serious as Alzheimer’s disease? The explanation is found both in the unique metabolic needs of the brain and in the configuration of MCTs themselves. Whereas the primary fuel source for the energy-hungry brain is glucose, when insulin resistance and suboptimal metabolism (hypometabolism) develops in the brain, both the brain’s structure and function are compromised. Ketone bodies provide a much needed alternative fuel source to glucose that can recharge metabolic processes within the brain, resulting in an almost immediate improvement in cognitive function.

MCTs are not like most fats we consume. For instance, due to their smaller size they do not form micelles and are not stored in adipose tissue. Whereas up to 97% of the dietary fats we ingest are made up of long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) which have been 14 and 18 carbons,[ii] MCTs have relatively shorter chain lengths of 5 to 12 carbons, making them easier to absorb and utilize. They are preferentially oxidized by the liver, and when provided in large enough quantities, they give rise to ketone bodies.[iii]
What is the best way to take MCTs? As we are advocates of whole food nutrition, coconut oil is our preferred source of these triglycerides, containing approximately 2/3rds MCTs by volume. Coconut oil also has a broad spectrum of other health benefits, which we highlighted in our previous article “13 Evidence-Based Medicinal Properties of Coconut Oil.”
Also, instead of treating coconut oil or MCTs as some new nutraceutical “magic bullet,” almost as if we are just loading natural bullets into the same old outdated allopathic gun, try incorporating it into your diet in a way that displaces less healthy fats. For instance, replace that rancid, pro-inflammatory ‘vegetable oil’ (e.g. soy, grape seed, peanut, canola oil) you are using to fry an egg or bake with, with sublimely saturated, rancidity-resistant coconut oil.
Or, enjoy a delicious curry with coconut milk as a base. Because 25% of coconut milk is fat, and about 66% of that fat is MCT, you are still getting a healthy dose. It is always better to eat smaller amounts of truly therapeutic foods, enjoyed in the context of sharing, preparing and enjoying good food, so that you will ideally never have to use the heroic “food as medicine” approach after a serious disease has had the opportunity to set in. Think: use food so that medicine never becomes necessary.

Raw Peppermint Patties

By Heather Braaten

Made from whole food ingredients, including nutrient rich raw cacao and healthy fats from coconut and cashew, these treats will not only satisfy your sweet tooth, they'll also nourish you.
Raw Peppermint Patties

Makes about 18 patties
For the filling
  • 1/4 cup, plus 2 tablespoons raw coconut butter
  • 2 tablespoons raw cashew butter
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey
  • ½ teaspoon peppermint oil
  • pinch of salt
For the coating
  • 3 full tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 ½ teaspoon raw honey
  • ½ cup raw cacao powder
  • pinch of salt
Preparation
1. Combine all filling ingredients into a bowl and mash together with a fork, carefully smoothing out lumps of coconut butter and cashew butter, until all ingredients are well combined & dough-like.
2. Roll into a long, skinny log approximately 1" diameter. Wrap in plastic wrap and set in the freezer for approximately 30 minutes, or until very cold & solid.
3. In a double broiler, or over very low heat, melt coconut oil & honey together, add cocao & salt, and stir until smooth & completely combined. Let cool slightly.
4. Remove filling from the freezer. Slice the log into thin disks. Work in batches, keeping most of the disks frozen, while you coat a few at a time.
5. Dip each pattie in the chocolate sauce. Work quickly, so the disks stay cold. Put coated patties back in the freezer and coat your next batch. Serve frozen.

Scientists Link Eating Coconut Oil To Reduction In Waist Size

Coconut oil is known as one of the world's healthiest fats. But did you know that eating coconut oil leads to drastic waist size reduction? According to several studies cited below, coconut oil contains a unique combination of fatty acids with powerful effects on metabolism, that accelerate the burning of dangerous fats.

Why Exactly Does Coconut Oil Have These Amazing Properties?

First of all, coconut oil is vastly different from most other fats. While other foods contain mostly long-chain fatty acids, coconut oil consists almost entirely of medium chain fatty acids.

Coconut Oil's Fatty Acids Boost Metabolism

Fatty acids, especially Medium Chain Triglycerides are metabolized differently than the rest. They are sent straight to the liver and, if not used right away they are stored relatively inefficiently, and so they are easy to burn.

Studies have shown that a diet rich in medium-chain fatty acids results in 20% less weight and 23% less body fat gained.

Coconut Oil Helps Burn More Calories At Rest

Each food, regardless of its calories, affects our body in a different way. Eating certain foods can have a huge effect on our hormones and metabolic health. Some foods require more energy to digest and metabolize and coconut oil is definitely one of them.

What is really important is the fact that it is “thermogenic.” Studies have shown that, compared to other fats, coconut oil tends to increase energy expenditure, that helps fat burn a lot faster.

Coconut Oil Reduces Your Appetite: You Eat Less Without Realizing It

According to recent research, medium chain fatty acids (the ones found in coconut oil), increase feelings of fullness, leading automatically to the reduction of calorie intake. In one study in particular, 6 healthy men started eating 256 fewer calories per day since they started consuming high amounts of coconut oil daily.

Coconut oil doesn't only boost fat burning (calories out), but it also reduces your appetite (calories in).

Coconut Oil Helps Burn The Dangerous Abdominal Fat

Apart from boosting metabolism and reducing appetite, coconut oil has another important property, one that can prove especially beneficial in the long run. As you probably know, not all kinds of fat are the same.

Abdominal fat, also called visceral fat or belly fat, is the fat that tends to lodge around your organs and cause inflammation, diabetes and heart disease. Any reduction in abdominal fat is likely to have very positive effects on your metabolic health, longevity and drastically reduce your risk of chronic disease. This is exactly what coconut oil does!

In a study comparing eating coconut oil to soybean oil, those who ate coconut oil not only lost weight, but also had a significant decrease in their waist circumference, hence their amount of belly fat. In another study in obese men, 30 grams of coconut oil for 4 weeks reduced waist circumference by 2.86 cm.

The conclusion is clear: Eating coconut is particularly effective at reducing the harmful belly fat in the abdominal cavity, which is strongly associated with disease.

Unbelievable But True – Here’s How You Can Heal Cavities In Natural Way!

It may sound quite amazing and perhaps unbelievable, but you can be rest assured that what you’re about to read is completely true. From now on, you can say goodbye to all those expensive and harmful toothpastes that contain dangerous ingredients that can cause CANCER! You do not need to use conventional toothpaste bought in stores anymore. Also, the best news is that your visits to the dentist will be much reduced. We found a great and completely safe solution how to treat cavities in natural way.
All you need is a simple ingredient which you may already have in your home. Believe it or not, you can heal and prevent cavities with COCONUT OIL! Latest studies have proven that coconut oil stops cavities by attacking bacteria that cause it.
How to Heal Cavities Naturally
If health authorities insist on adding chemicals to water in order to stop tooth decay, then you should use natural coconut oil, not fluoride chemicals, based on the results of a new study. Researchers at the Institute of Technology Athlone (AIT) in Ireland have discovered that coconut oil has a great effect on inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria which can cause cavities and infections in the mouth without any harmful side effects.
For their study, a team of researchers from the school add enzymes and several other coconut oils to mimic how these oils are usually processed during digestion. The team then applied digested form of each of the oils on several bacterial strains, including Streptococcus Mutans, the main acid producing bacteria, which often occurs in the mouth, and Candida Albicans – a very problematic strain of yeast that can cause fungal infection in human mouth.
Famous Hollywood actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Shailene Woodley drew the attention of the public with the new trend of beauty, which has roots in ancient Ayurvedic medicine.
It is a treatment with daily oral rinse or coating with oil, which supposedly removes toxins from the body, strengthens immunity, removes toothache and headache, bronchitis, diseases of the intestines, heart and kidney disease, female diseases, cramps and many other diseases. Besides all of this oil puling with coconut oil is a great way to whiten your teeth.
This therapy originated in Ayurveda, according to which the oral cavity is causing many diseases.

So here is how to oil pull using coconut oil:
Take about 2 teaspoons of coconut oil and put it in your mouth.
You can chew or hold the coconut oil in your mouth until it melts down and becomes liquid. This process takes about half a minute.
Once the oil is melted start to swish and pull the oil back and forth as well as sideways covering all of your teeth. Do this for about 20 minutes and then spit the oil.
You can start oil pulling this day and in just a month the cavities in your teeth will be all removed! Don’t FORGET To SHARE This Valuable INFORMATION With ALL Your Friends And Loved Ones.

How to Heal Cavities Naturally

healcavities1

The world is slowly waking up to the fact that, when you give the body what it needs, it can heal things we previously thought were impossible. A fine example of what is often deemed as an incurable health problem is dental cavities, but extensive research is now becoming more public about the true nature of tooth decay and the fact that there are proven remedies that can remedy it.
The lies perpetrated about tooth decay

How to heal Cavities naturally:

According to the American Dental Association, the reason we have tooth decay is as follows:
“[Tooth decay] occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as milk, pop, raisins, cakes or candy are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay.”
There are a few problems with this theory, including:
  • Groups of indigenous people who had fermentable carbohydrates stuck on their teeth all the time that did not brush or floss were mostly or completely free of tooth decay.
  • Bacteria do not consume processed sugar or flour because of the lack of nutrients in them.
  • Foods that bacteria like to eat, such as milk, vegetables, meat, fish and fruit, are not commonly implicated in causes of tooth decay.
So if the modern explanation of tooth decay is not accurate, what is actually the cause of tooth decay?
What actually causes tooth decay
Tooth decay, as researched by Dr. Weston Price and other dental pioneers, boiled down to three factors:
  • Not enough minerals in the diet.
  • Not enough fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) in the diet.
  • Nutrients not being readily bioavailable, and your intestinal system not properly absorbing them. The presence of phytic acid largely influences this factor.
Over a period of time, if your diet lacks vitamins and minerals from a poor diet and/or contains high levels of phytates (from grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes), the blood chemistry and the ratio of calcium and phosphorous become out of balance, which results in minerals being pulled from bones, causing tooth and bone loss.
So, the long-standing belief that sugar causes tooth decay is true, but as a result of it depleting nutrients from the body, not because bacteria eat it and produce acid that ruins your teeth.

The food remedies that can heal cavities and tooth decay

In order to restore the ratio of calcium and phosphorus in our blood, and to enable minerals to bond to our teeth, it is not enough to just avoid eating too many sweet or processed foods. We must also eat health-building foods, containing copious amounts of minerals and vitamins that will build a glassy hard tooth structure.
Foods to focus on are:
  • Coconut oil, grass-fed organic dairy (especially butter), grass-fed meats, seafood and bone broths.
  • Organic cooked vegetables (soups with bone broth are ideal).
  • Organ and gland meats, like liver.
Limit foods that are high in phytic acid, like grains, beans, nuts and seeds, as well as limiting processed food intake full of processed flours and sugars that upset blood sugar balance.
Supplements to consider are:
  • Fermented cod liver oil – very high in fat soluble vitamins A, D and K.
  • Magnesium – required to use calcium and phosphorous effectively.
  • Gelatin – if you don’t have time to make bone broth, this is a good alternative and is great for gums and digestion.
Now go get your pearly white smile back.

How to Power Your Body for Meditation With Plant-Based Foods

By Erin Trauth
While meditation can work any time with anyone in most any state of being, it doesn’t hurt to power your body with plant-based foods that will invoke a feeling of calm over us, especially for for those of us who are a little type-A and have trouble calming ourselves for meditative purposes from time to time (I am looking in the mirror on this one). Consider this list as a duel purpose one — you can think of eating these foods specifically to get your body in a more constant state of calm, or, you can think of this as a primer for those working their way into meditation and need a little boost to calm the body. These foods will help in both respects. Either way you eat it, you’ll be munching your way to a more zenned-out you!

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is not only good for your health, but the scent of it can calm you. Thus, if you add it in to your diet throughout the day or before meditation, you may bring your mind to a calmer state sooner. As reported via Eating Well, “When you’re stressed, the scent of coconut may blunt your natural ‘fight or flight’ response, slowing your heart rate. People who breathed in coconut fragrance in a small pilot study at Columbia University saw their blood pressure recover more quickly after a challenging task. The researchers speculate that inhaling a pleasant scent enhances alertness while soothing our response to stress.” Mix up a smoothie with coconut oil added in the morning, or add a tablespoon of it to your daily tea. Be sure to take  a big sniff of it before gulping it up too!

Chocolate

I know this is very sad news for all of us (NOT!), but chocolate can indeed be calming. Livestrong explains: “Eating chocolate can cause the brain to produce natural opiates — a chemical well-known for it’s anti-anxiety effects.” In addition, “chocolate is an excellent source of magnesium, a mineral that can help reduce muscle tension, which is a classic sign of anxiety.” If you’re aiming to stay plant-based, opt for dark chocolate, and do be sure to not eat too much, of course. A little nibble before meditation or on days you need some insta-Zen will do the trick just fine.

Asparagus
Asparagus is high in folate, and folate is essential for keeping your cool shades on. All Women’s Talk notes: “Depression and anxiety have been linked to a folic acid deficiency in the body, and asparagus is one of the top food sources of this nutrient.”

Avocados

Not only are avocados flippin’ delicious, but they also are jam-packed with great nutrients that will help keep your mind calm. Prevention explains: “These creamy fruits stress-proof your body. Rich in glutathione, a substance that specifically blocks intestinal absorption of certain fats that cause oxidative damage, avocados also contain lutein, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and more folate than any other fruit. A single serving (about one-quarter of an avocado) has plenty of B vitamins, too.” How’s that for an overachiever? Load up on avocados any time you feel the stress coming on or the need for meditation to set in!

Cashews

Cashews are not only delicious and versatile, but they also contain a hefty dose of zinc. “Low levels of zinc have been linked to both anxiety and depression,” Prevention explains. “Since our bodies have no way of storing zinc, it’s important to get some every day.” What better way to get this dose than with a handful of satisfying and flavorful cashews?

How do you prep your body for even more Zen? Do those of you who meditate (or make a specific attempt to eat for calm) opt for any of these plant-based snacks, or others? Let us know!

Oil Pulling For Whiter Teeth and Better Breath

Oil Pulling HeaderIt has taken quite some time, but oil pulling has finally gained some popularity in the United States. Used primarily in Ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling is a fantastic oral detoxification procedure that is simply done by swishing a tablespoon of oil (typically coconut, olive or sesame) in your mouth for 10-20 minutes.

What is Oil Pulling? by Dr. Josh Axe and Eric Zielinski

Oil pulling works by cleaning (detoxifying) the oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally sucks the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth and creates a clean, antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that is needed to prevent cavities and disease.
This unbelievably effective procedure has been used for centuries as a traditional India remedy to:
  • Cure tooth decay
  • Prevent bad breath
  • Heal bleeding gums
  • Whiten teeth
  • Soothe throat dryness
  • Heal cracked lips
  • Strengthening gums and jaw
Oil Pulling Benefits
In fact, oil pulling is mentioned in the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita where it is claimed to cure about 30 systemic diseases ranging from headaches and tooth decay to diabetes and asthma.

How to Do Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil

We recommend using unrefined, organic coconut oil and a drop or two of clove or tea tree essential oils to achieve the best antiseptic and anti-fungal effects of oil pulling. Here are some tips:
1. Put 2 teaspoons of coconut oil into your mouth. The best time to oil pull (like most other detoxification procedures) is first thing in the morning right after you get out of bed.
2. Swish for 20 minutes.  Don’t let the 20 minute time frame deter you. You won’t even notice 20 minutes have gone by if you do this during your normal morning routine (i.e. while you shower, put your clothes on and prep for the day).  But, if you can only do it for 5-10 minutes, it’s still worthwhile.
3. Spit oil into the trash. Don’t be shocked if the oil/saliva mixture you spit out is milky white or yellow.
4. Immediately afterwards, rinse your mouth out with warm water. Use salt water for added antimicrobial properties.
5. Finally, brush your teeth as normal.  For additional benefits, use my natural toothpaste recipe with baking soda, coconut oil and clove essential oil.
Note: This should be a relatively relaxing process, so don’t feel compelled to vigorously swish your mouth with oil for the entire time or else you’re bound to get sore jaw muscles. Simply move the oil in your mouth and through your teeth without swallowing any of it.

The Research

As stated by one study, “The myth that the effect of oil-pulling therapy on oral health was just a placebo effect has been broken”.
Here are just a couple studies proving oil pulling benefits on your oral and whole body health.

Oil Pulling To Prevent Cavities

In 2008, the Journal of Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventative Dentistry published a triple-blind random control trial that evaluated the effects oil pulling with sesame oil has onSteptococcus mutans bacterial count in plaque and saliva.
Twenty boys were recruited to be part of two groups; one in which 10 practiced oil pulling and another that used regular mouthwash for 10 minutes every day in the morning.
After collecting samples for 2 weeks, it was discovered that, even though the chemicals in mouth wash were slightly more effective in reducing the bacteria, oil pulling was significantly effective in killing S. mutans, one of the primary causes of cavities.
However I believe if coconut oil was used which has anti-microbial properties unlike sesame oil we may have seen that coconut oil was just as effective or more effective.

Oil Pulling Heals Gum Disease and Bad Breath

In 2010, the same journal shared the results of a similar study that evaluated the effects oil pulling has on bad breath and oral yeast. Again, taking 20 young volunteers, the results of this study were even more in favor of oil pulling than the one above.
According to the authors, “Oil pulling therapy has been equally effective to the chemicals in mouth wash on bad breath and candida”. Additionally, the researchers discovered that oil pulling also has statistically significant effects on reducing the gingival index, a marker that determines the severity for gingivitis (gum disease).
At the end of the day, you have nothing to lose, but everything to gain from oil pulling. There are relatively no known oil pulling side effects and, as we’ve seen in the research, the list of benefits is quite remarkable. Try it today and make it a part of your natural hygiene routine!
