The magic of spirulina on your skin!


Spirulina is a dark green algae that grows on the surface of lakes. Here in Kenya, it grows on Lake Victoria, therefore it is readily available in many supermarkets and health food shops. It contains 65 percent protein and is packed with vitamins, iron, amino acids, and omegas, thus, it is extremely nourishing.
The antioxidants found in spirulina are four times the amount found in berries. The rich green colour comes from chlorophyll which helps to eliminate toxins from our body, while also boosting the immune system. This powder can be taken with water, smoothies, or sprinkled on food.

It is highly alkaline therefore it is beneficial when ingested or applied to the skin. It is available in powder, tablet or flake form. Some of the many benefits of spirulina for the skin include:

Apply to a clean face, avoiding the eyes, nostrils and mouth. You can apply with your fingertips or a brush.

Step 3 - Dry

Allow drying for 10 – 15 minutes.

Step 4 - Rinse

Rinse off with warm water.

Step 5 - Moisturise

Nuns grow spirulina for malnourished children - You can grow this superfood at home

Many people believe the word "superfood" is a term used for click bait and nothing more, but superfoods not only exist, they are the superheroes of the food world. Spirulina is one such food.

In the Central African Republic, Catholic nuns are using the blue-green algae to fight malnutrition at the St. Joseph Health Center. Bangui, where the nuns are located, has been dealing with the effects of a conflict that has made resources scarce. After a meeting with a French pharmacist who advised them on how to grow spirulina, the nuns at St Joseph Health Center were able to successfully harvest the algae to combat malnutrition.

Energize with this Raw Superfood Breakfast Recipe!

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup Raw Hulled Buckwheat (soaked overnight, strained and rinsed in the morning)
  • 1 cup Dried Coconut Flakes (unsweetened)
  • 1 cup Seeds/Chopped Nuts: mix any Hemp, Sunflower, Pumpkin, Jungle Peanuts, Pecans, Walnuts, Almonds, Brazil Nuts
  •  1/2 cup Dried Fruit (Goji Berries, Currants, Raisins – all unsulphured and without hydrogenated oils)
  • 1–2 tbsp Raw Honey or Maple Syrup
Optional:
  • 2 tbsp. Coconut Oil (to lower glycemic index and stabilize blood sugars)
  • 1 tsp. Spirulina
  • 1–2 tbsp. Raw Cacao Powder
  • 1–2 scoops Protein Powder
  • 1–2 tbsp. Maca Powder
  •  Orange or Lemon zest
Directions:
1. Take 1 cup raw buckwheat (also called groats) and rinse under cold water. Place in large glass bowl and cover with 6 cups of water. Leave on counter overnight or for at least 6 hours, to begin the germination process.
2. In the morning, or 6 hours later, strain buckwheat with fine strainer and rinse well.
Note: Buckwheat will appear slightly slimy.
3. Ensure buckwheat is well rinsed and patted dry with paper bowl. Leave in fine strainer or sprouting tray (can be purchased online or in health food stores) with a bowl underneath for 24 hours to sprout or proceed to step 4 immediately.
4. In a large bowl, mix soaked/sprouted buckwheat with 1 cup of coconut flakes, 1 cup of nuts or seeds, 1/2 cup dried fruit, and 1-2 tablespoons sweetener plus any other additional toppings.
5. Enjoy with your favourite homemade dairy-free milks, yogurts or creams and fresh fruit! Store covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Ultimately, the participants experienced a 47% decrease of arsenic in their body!

When researchers took 11 HIV patients who have never taken antiretrovirals, they split the participants into three groups: one that was assigned to eat 5 g of brown seaweed every day, one that was to eat 5 g of spirulina, and one that ate a combination of both. (10) After the three-month trial period was complete, two key findings were discovered:
  1. Absolutely no adverse effects were experienced from both seaweed varieties and the combination.
  2. CD4 cells (T-helper white blood cells that fight infection and are used to stage HIV) and HIV-1 viral load (another HIV biomarker) remained stable.
The results were so promising that one participant volunteered to continue the study for an additional 10 months, and this participant actually benefited from “clinically significant improvement in CD4 and decreased HIV viral load”!

4. Helps Prevent Cancer

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, “A number of animal and test tube studies suggest that spirulina increases production of antibodies, infection-fighting proteins, and other cells that improve immunity and help ward off infection and chronic illnesses such as cancer.” (11)
This doesn’t come as a surprise as more than 70 peer-reviewed articles have been published in the scientific literature evaluating spirulina’s ability to effect cancer cells! (12)
In an article published this past April, Czech Republic scientists pointed out that, in addition to its ability to control blood cholesterol levels, “Spirulina is also rich in tetrapyrrolic compounds closely related to bilirubin molecule, a potent antioxidant and anti-proliferative agent.” (13)
When tested on human pancreatic cells, these researchers discovered that, “Compared to untreated cells, experimental therapeutics significantly decreased proliferation of human pancreatic cancer cell lines in vitro in a dose-dependent manner.” Essentially, this proves that consuming spirulina can help prevent developing various cancers!

Phycocyanin is a pigment found in the spirulina that scientists have discovered possesses antihypertensive effects (it lowers blood pressure). (14) Japanese researchers claim that this is because consuming the blue-green algae reverses endothelial dysfunction in metabolic syndrome.
I find this extremely promising for Americans because metabolic syndrome has rapidly become one of the main causes of preventable disease today, as it raises one’s risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and stroke. (15)

Along those same lines, spirulina benefits have also been shown to prevent atherosclerosis and reduce elevated blood cholesterol levels.
A recent animal study published in The Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology took rabbits, fed them a high cholesterol diet (HCD) containing 0.5% cholesterol for four weeks, and then fed them a HCD with 1% or 5% spirulina for an additional eight weeks. (16)
After the eight-week trial was complete, LDL levels decreased by 26% in the group eating 1% of spirulina and 41% in the group eating 5% spirulina, which heavily suggests that the more we eat the more benefits we will receive! Serum triglycerides and total cholesterol were also significantly reduced.

In the study above, researchers also discovered that the spirulina supplementation lowered intimal aorta surface by 33% to 48%, which suggests that it can prevent atherosclerosis and subsequent stroke. (17)
It’s important to remember that this clinical trial was conducted on animals that were still eating a HCD, and it highlights that regular spirulina consumption can literally reverse the damage done by eating a poor diet. You can only imagine the heart health benefits that would be experienced in those individuals who have a balanced diet!

They say that so many birds come to the lake for this food, that often in winter some parts are covered with them.” (21)
Referred to as “Tecuitlatl,” spirulina was a primary source of protein for the Aztecs for several hundred years and Lake Texcoco remains an abundant fountainhead of this Superfood still today.

First mentioned by Dangeard in the 1940’s, history tells us that Central Africans near Lake Chad have been cultivating spirulina since they first inhabited the region in the 9th century.
Referred to as “die,” an article was written in 1959 highlighting this fascinating food, yet researchers confused it with Chlorella. It wasn’t until a Belgian Expedition in 1969, however, that scientists finally discovered the true value of spirulina. (22)

Because they are both similar microalgae species, it’s easy to understand how scientists confused spirulina with chlorella back in the 1940s. In spite of their stark differences, people commonly mistake one for the other even today. Here are the four main differences that are important to understand:
1. Shape
First of all, spirulina is a spiral-shaped, multi-celled plant with no true nucleus. It’s blue-green in hue and can grow up to 100 times the size of chlorella. Comparably, chlorella is a spherical-shaped single-celled microorganism with a nucleus and is solid green.
2.  How It’s Grown
Second, the growing conditions differ considerably. Spirulina grows best in low-alkaline conditions — particularly, fresh water lakes, ponds and rivers. It also requires an abundance of sunshine and moderate temperatures.
Chlorella, on the other hand, grows in fresh water typically occupied by other organisms, which makes it more challenging to harvest.
3. Preparation
Third, the ways in which both spirulina and chlorella can be eaten are also very different. Because of its hard, indigestible cellulose wall, for instance, chlorella requires mechanical processing to make it worthwhile for human consumption. Otherwise, the body won’t be able break down and metabolize its nutrients.
The process can be quite costly, which explains why chlorella is usually more expensive than spirulina. On the other hand, spirulina has a completely digestible cellulose wall and can be immediately consumed and digested with ease.
4. Nutrition
Finally, although both are considered superfoods, spirulina and chlorella differ in their nutritional content. Arguably the healthier of the two, spirulina contains more essential amino acids, iron, protein, B vitamins, and vitamins C, D and E.
With that said, chlorella still holds an abundance of health benefits. My personal go-to, however, is spirulina.

Yesterday marked the third time in the last month that I had overheard someone being diagnosed with a magnesium deficiency. The interesting thing is that in all three scenarios (my own included) the symptoms that each individual was exhibiting to prove the deficiency were completely different from one another. Needless to say, this made me curious and led me down a bit of a rabbit hole in further understanding what exactly magnesium is and how it plays a role in our overall health.

What Is Magnesium?

Magnesium is a mineral that is essential to the body for maintaining normal muscle and nerve function. It is involved in over 300 metabolic processes in your body and plays a key role in keeping a healthy immune system, maintaining heart rhythm and building strong bones.(2) Naturally magnesium can be found in a number of seeds (i.e., pumpkin and sunflower), nuts (i.e., almonds and cashews), and even in spinach which packs an average of 79 mg of magnesium per 100 gram serving.
The daily recommended intake of magnesium ranges from 400 to 420 mg in men, 310 to 360 mg in women and 80 to 240 mg in children all depending on age. It is also suggested that when pregnant, women increase their magnesium intake to between 350 and 400 mg depending on the age at which they are pregnant.(1)

Every system and function in our body depends on magnesium, but many things can deplete our magnesium levels — from something as simple as vomiting or diarrhea to more serious medical conditions like diabetes, pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism, and kidney disease.
Even beverages such as too much coffee, soda, or alcohol can trigger the downward spiral. If you lose too many bodily fluids during a heavy menstrual period or through excessive sweating, your magnesium levels are a bit lower than preferable.
Stress is another big way to deplete your magnesium stores. According to Dr. Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle:
The scenario that I like to talk about is very basic. You’re under massive stress. Massive stress means you’re losing magnesium. You’re burning magnesium out of your body, because it helps support your adrenal glands. It helps keep you away from anxiety and depression. It helps relax your muscles.
If you’re all tight and stressed, your magnesium is being lost, [which makes] the muscles of your blood vessels tighten. That tightness is going to cause increased blood pressure…

Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency

We haven’t gotten to the big question yet, though — how do you know you suffer from a magnesium deficiency? All of the symptoms below can be attributed to low stores of magnesium in your body:
  • muscle twitches, muscle spasm and weakness, restless leg syndrome (RLS)
  • tension in upper back, neck pain
  • headaches, tension headaches, blurred vision
  • sleep disorders, insomnia
  • agitation, anxiety, irritability, depression
  • jitteriness, hyperactivity, panic attacks, hyperventilation
  • sensitivity to noise
  • loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting
  • abnormal heart rhythms, heart palpitations, feeling that you can’t take a deep breath, coronary spasms, low blood pressure
  • craving for salt, carbohydrates, chocolate
  • drinking a lot of water but still feeling thirsty
  • confusion, disorientation,
  • poor nail growth
  • numbness, tingling, seizures
  • constipation, urinary spasms, menstrual cramps
So how can you restore your magnesium levels? Start by healing any possible gut issues (your gut health affects the absorption of minerals, including magnesium).   • Acerola cherry has twice as much magnesium than oranges, enhances memory, and regulates blood sugar.
  • Goji berry is loaded with magnesium. It also normalizes blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
  • Barley grass contains four times more magnesium than spinach, and caused significant improvements in those suffering from ulcerative colitis.
  • Moringa is great for low energy and contains large amounts of magnesium.
  • Spirulina is another food rich in magnesium and also reduces blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Tulsi (also known as holy basil) is abundant in magnesium and especially effective in supporting the heart.
These supplemental foods are some of the highest sources of magnesium. You can take them separately, or buy them already combined in one of my favorite nutritional drinks. But any way you do it, increasing your magnesium is essential for your health.
