How to Make Anti-Inflammatory and Pain Relief Turmeric Ginger Tea

How to Make Anti-Inflammatory and Pain Relief Turmeric Ginger Tea

Turmeric and ginger are botanically related to each other and have both been used for centuries as spices in cooking and as medicinal herbs. These herbs are recommended for treating gastrointestinal problems, inflammatory conditions and several other conditions. I’ve written in the past about how inflammation is created in the body and about the damage it causes, and you can read more about it here. Ginger and turmeric are two of the best herbs to relieve joint pain and are mentioned in my article about the best herbs to relieve joint pain.
The strong anti-inflammatory properties of ginger are excellent for dealing with muscle and arthritic pain. Ginger contains powerful anti-inflammatory substances called gingerols. These have been tested in various research of rheumatic diseases such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. The participants in the research reported a gradual reduction of pain, improving agility and movement and reduction in swelling when using ginger regularly. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger also promote digestion and soothes colic, relieve nausea and intestinal gas, and also as a treatment for colds and other respiratory conditions. I have already written a very detailed post in the past on how to use ginger as a medicine for great health.
Studies have shown that turmeric is more effective at easing pain than aspirin and other similar chemical medications. It is a great help in the relieving of chronic arthritis and joint pain, as well as relieve symptoms of ulcerative colitis and osteoarthritis, which are two other inflammatory conditions. One of the active ingredients in turmeric is called curcumin, and is used in traditional Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine to treat arthritis. It is claimed that turmeric reduces arthritis joint pain, inflammation, and stiffness related to arthritis. Turmeric also has a good effect on the digestive system as well. If you are interested to learn more about the amazing health benefits of turmeric then you can read a previous post about all the reasons to eat more turmeric.

For 1 cup of water use 1 teaspoon each of fresh grated turmeric and ginger roots. If you use ground turmeric and ginger, use 1/3 teaspoon each. Add raw honey to taste, and a slice of lemon if you want.

Anti-Inflammatory Ginger Turmeric Tea Recipe

In order to increase turmeric absorption in the body (studies have revealed that turmeric has low absorption and rapid metabolism that lead to relatively low bioavailability in the body) you need to add a little bit of fat to the tea, such as a teaspoon of coconut oil or flaxseed oil for example. Another option is to add a little bit (1/4-1/2 tsp) of black pepper that contains piperine which aids the absorption of curcumin. You can read more about turmeric absorption in my previous article How to Optimize Turmeric Absorption for Super Boosted Benefits.
Preparation
In a small saucepan, bring water to boil. Add fresh grated turmeric and ginger, reduce heat, and simmer for 10-15 minutes. If using ground turmeric and ginger, boil for 7 minutes. Then strain the tea and add the honey and lemon to taste. Add the coconut oil or black pepper to increase turmeric absorption.
How much and how often
There are no official dosing instructions exist for ginger and turmeric tea. You can drink 1 cup of it on days you feel extra achy.
Side effects
Although these herbs are considered safe and without significant side effects when used appropriately by adults, each may interact with certain prescription medications. For example both may not be safe if you have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning drugs. Therefore talk with your doctor before deciding if one or both herbs might be useful for your situation. Also taking these herbs by mouth in medicinal amounts is likely unsafe in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Anti-Inflammatory Pineapple Ginger Smoothie

by KAREN FOSTER

Pineapple has been used for centuries to reduce pain and inflammation. It turns out that an enzyme found in pineapples called bromelain does, in fact, have scientifically proven medicinal benefits. Two molecules isolated from an extract of crushed pineapple stems have even shown promise in fighting cancer growth. Studies have shown that bromelain reduces swelling, bruising, healing time and pain. An even more potent anti-inflammatory is ginger whose analgesic properties have been proven stronger than ibuprofen. Combine the two in this smoothie recipe and you have deliciously balanced beverage at any time of the day.

Ingredients:
- 2 cups ripe pineapple
- 1 cup ripe mango
- 1 piece of ginger (about 3 inches)
- 1/2 cup of celery
- 1 cup of coconut water
- 1 tsp. fresh vanilla

A high-speed blender is your friend for this recipe so if you have a vitamix or blend-tec you'll be able to achieve a great consistency.

Turmeric Smoothie Recipe Makes A Delicious & Powerful Antioxidant

by Joe Martino

How would you like to start your day with an awesome antioxidant packed smoothie that has a ton of medicinal properties as well? This turmeric smoothie recipe is perfect for that.

The Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family. The average person may best recognize turmeric as a spice commonly used in Indian cuisine. The active compound curcumin is known to have a wide range of medicinal benefits including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumour, antibacterial, and antiviral activities. In India, turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for stomach and liver ailments. Turmeric can also be used topically to heal sores due to its antimicrobial properties.
Turmeric is also the liver’s favorite spice and helps boost liver detox. It does this by assisting enzymes that actively flush out dietary carcinogens. Be sure to check how powerful turmeric can be in treating depression as well.

Turmeric Smoothie Recipe Ingredients:

For these ingredients, try and use organic as much as possible. Also try not to substitute actual milk for hemp or coconut milk. If you need, you can try almond milk as well.
  • 1 cup hemp or coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple or mango chunks
  • 1 fresh banana
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (can be increased to 1 tsp)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon maca (optional)
Add all ingredients into a blender and process until smooth. Try to drink this smoothie in the morning before you have anything to eat. It’s a solid way to start your day and pack your body full of antioxidants.

Master Tonic 101

LOVE the "Master Tonic" recipe? Pin it on Pinterest!

Master Tonic looks like it cures everything and is easy to make and have on hand.
WEAR GLOVES!!
[I did not peel my garlic this time --- MUCH EASIER!!]
Master Tonic Ingredients
1 part fresh chopped garlic cloves (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitical)
1 part fresh chopped white onions, or the hottest onions available (similar properties to garlic)
1 part fresh grated ginger root (increases circulation to the extremities)
1 part fresh grated horseradish root (increases blood flow to the head)
1 part fresh chopped Cayenne peppers, Jalapenos, Serranos, Habeneros, African bird peppers....any combination of the hottest peppers available

Preparation
· Fill a glass jar 3/4 of the way full with equal parts of the fresh chopped or grated ingredients. Fresh herbs are best. Then cover completely with raw unfiltered, unbleached, nondistilled apple cider vinegar.

· Close and shake vigorously and then top off the vinegar if necessary. Keep the jar in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks. (I store it in my cabinet with the drinking glasses so that I see it and remember to shake daily.)

· Shake the tonic daily a couple of times.

Begin this formula on the NEW moon and strain and bottle on the FULL moon, (approximately 14 days). Filter the mixture through a clean piece of cotton (coffee filter or colander), bottle and label.
Usage:
Strain liquids from solids after steeping about 2 weeks.

May puree the solids and add to honey or lemon juice, or make salad dressing or marinade for meats. Master Tonic lasts indefinitely at room temperature, after straining
.

Dosage:
1/2 to 1 ounce, two or more times daily, as needed. I hear it is not only the cure for the common cold but every other disease of mankind. lol

Note: Store your Master Tonic in a dark place.

"This tonic is extremely powerful, because all the ingredients are fresh. Its power should not be underestimated. This formula is a modern day plague tonic. It is said that when added to an incurable routine it could cure the most chronic conditions and stubborn diseases. It stimulates maximum blood circulation, while putting the best detoxifying herbs into the blood. This formula is not just for the sniffles, it has helped to turn around the deadliest diseases."

"...I designed this formula as a fresh herb alternative to Dr. Christopher’s plague formula, to be more alive, a herbal juice tonic, and believe me, you don’t want to be without formulas like this when you or your loved ones get ill; it will save your life. Make up plenty, it can’t go bad because vinegar already is, and will last almost forever..," writes Dr. Shultz.

Quoted from Sam Biser’s “The Last Chance Health Report” on Killer Viruses: A formula for stopping them when drugs fail. http://www.its-my-health.com/documents/MasterTonic.pdf

I've seen it recommended to add all ingredients to the blender to puree, others coarsely chop the veggies. I've also seen it recommended to consume it on top of bread and butter.  And "if you eat it with cheese, it isn't even very spicy"?? The suggestion was to partake of it regularly in this way, like a condiment. :

Especially warming, if coming in from the cold, windy, wet weather. And, just sniff to clear the sinuses.

Supposed to be helpful for bladder and kidney issues? (Maybe because it makes you drink a LOT of water. LOL)

Apparently, excess ginger can cause uterine contractions?? So, caution with pregnancy.

This article describes some of the myriad of benefits from a scientific (sorta) perspectivehttp://fairhillsfarm.com/2008/12/11/some-good-old-fashioned-horsera...
Also, delicious on fish, salmon, halibut, etc.

Here is a commercial version, without the horseradish: Blair's Mega Death Sauce- Feel Alive! http://www.hotsauceworld.com/blairmegdeat.html

Maybe we need a bit of wasabi added?

Here it is Cyclone Cider Herbal Tonic:http://www.supplementwarehouse.com/viewitem.asp?idproduct=43121 It is an herbal extract of CAYENNE PEPPER, GARLIC, ONIONHORSERADISH ROOT, GINGER ROOT, PARSLEY in a base of raw apple cider vinegar.

Between this and some raw milk kefir, we could cure the world.

Whew~ that is potent stuff!

I was brave. I took most of a tablespoon, without taste testing first and put it in the back of my mouth, gargled (sorta) a bit and felt it go alllllllll the way down to my navel.

About half way down, I decided I needed a chaser.  My eyes were a bit teary. (I had an emergency banana sitting ready. But, left it uneaten.)

I made enough for the whole neighborhood, it appears! It cost about $20 for all the ingredients; and I have four mason jars full! I strained mine and I believe it will keep indefinitely. I saved the strained chopped bits in the freezer for adding to soups and stuff to spice it up.

I hunted for a recipe which included additional herbs and spices. Does anyone have one?

I know the following have natural antifungal, antiparsitic, antibacterial properties: black walnut hulls, wormwood, clove, raw pumpkin seeds, fennel, thyme, sage, goldenseal, oregano, water, salt, essential oils: cinnamon, lemongrass, thyme, peppermint, lavender, coriander; olive leaf extracts, vit C, onion, allspice, tarragon, cumin; capsicums, including chilies and other hot peppers; black and white pepper, ginger, anise seed, celery seed, and the juices of lemons and limes; cranberries, myrrh, turmeric, echinacea, licorice root, Pau d'arco, rosemary, basil, mint, anise, dandelion, honey, garlic.

So, I was curious about including these, or making an alternate tonic with some of them as an alternate to rotate. But, I wasn't sure about including them in the Master Tonic.

I LOVE my Master Tonic. I've been adding a teaspoon of it to a cup of bone broth occasionallys. It is deliciously zesty and invigorating!

(the thread that started it all)

I put the whole peppers (with seeds and top little stem attached) in the food processor. De-seeding them seemed too difficult. My Master Tonic is wicked hot. It is easier in the food processor (than chopping/grating by hand) but leave the b...its coarse chopped, mine was diced to bits.

Use gloves!

Any jar will do. Mason jars are about $2 each at a (Ace) hardware store or Walmart of regular grocery. Or reuse an old mayo or pickle jar.

If you coarsely chop the ingredients, it is more mild than if you finely chop or puree the ingredients in a food processor. Coarse chopped makes it more palatable for children. Also, if you use a finer filter, like a coffee filter, rather than a metal strainer, more of the sediment is removed. Additionally, shaking it before each use increases the potency of flavor a LOT, lol. And imo, it is easier to swallow cold or warm, rather than room temp. And we chase it with honey. Diluted in water is another way to make it more palatable, sorta. ;-)

I add a shy tablespoon of the Master Tonic to a cup of bone broth. It is so zippy and warm and nourishing, especially when coming in from the winter cold, or first thing in the morning to get your blood moving!

(I did not make mine with the moon. I did not weigh or measure; I approximated the quantities very informally. I love my Master Tonic!!)

My understanding is that we shouldn't add ingredients after the ferment starts.

This Fruit is 500% More Effective Than Cough Syrup

This Fruit is 500% More Effective Than Cough Syrup
The exotic pineapple was brought to Europe from South America in the times of Christopher Columbus. It was originally a sign of prestige and featured only in lavish banquets. Nowadays, pineapples can be easily acquired and they are popular around the world for their sweet and fresh taste, and also for their health benefits.

In Central and South America, where this fruit is believed to originate from, it has been known for centuries for its positive effects on digestion and its anti-inflammatory properties.
The anti-inflammatory effect is attributed to the action of bromelain, which is an enzyme and a powerful antioxidant. Many studies to date looked at bromelain’s functions. It has been suggested that it alleviates joint painarthritis, reduces inflammation, inhibits tumor growth and shortens recovery time after surgeries.
Bromelain is one of the most popular supplements in Germany, where it has been recognized for its potential in reducing inflammation and swelling of the nose and sinuses, most commonly after a surgery or injury. Bromelain kills bacteria and fights infections.  You can read more about the healing benefits of pineapple and how to use it to treat many ailments in my post on how to use pineapple as a medicine.
Pineapple is also rich in vitamin C. One cup of pure juice contains 50% of your recommended daily intake. If you eat fresh pineapple chunks, one cup will provide you with 131% of your vitamin C needs for the day. Vitamin C is an important vitamin and an antioxidant. It keeps your body healthy and strong by maintaining the bones, muscles and blood vessels.
Pineapple contains some other important nutrients too, including vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B-6, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, manganese and potassium. It is an amazing source of essential vitamins and minerals.
When it comes to treating persistent cough and cold, pineapple juice can soothe a sore throat and helps to cough out all the stubborn mucus. One study that compared over-the-counter cough syrup and pineapple extract showed that pineapple was five times more effective. Patients recovered 4.8 times quicker when taking the natural pineapple remedy, and had an overall improvement in their cold symptoms.
In 2010, a group of Indian scientists looked into different treatments for tuberculosis. They discovered that a mixture of pineapple juice, raw honey, pepper and salt helped to dissolve the mucus in the patient’s lungs.
When you reach for pineapple juice as your healing modality, it is important to get unprocessed natural juice. Store-bought brands often contain a lot of sugar and not much real fruit. If you have a juicer at home, the best option is to make your own fresh juice. Just follow this simple recipe:
  • 1 cup of fresh pineapple juice
  • A quarter of a cup of fresh lemon juice
  • Some fresh ginger
  • A tablespoon of raw organic honey
  • Half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • You can also add some turmeric (this will help with your digestion)
Mix all the ingredients and drink two to three times a day. Now you have your own cough remedy with no toxic chemicals added.
Pineapple is also one of the ingredients in my digestive enzyme detox smoothie which will help your digestive system to do it’s important role.
You can find more recipes and helpful information about how to detox safely in my e-book The Detox Guide, where you will find how to cleanse and energize your body, increase stamina and improve your body’s digestive process.

Ginger Root Kills Ovarian & Prostate Cancer Cells Better than Chemo

WIKI-Ginger
Thanks to research from the University of Michigan and nearly three centuries of medicinal use, we can now utilize ginger root to not only kill ovarian cancer cells, but also prostate cancer cells with zero toxicity.
Truly among the great medicines of the world, ginger has long been used to treat inflammation and nausea, but the results presented in a session at the American Association for Cancer Research show that in every single instance where ginger powder was used to treat cancer cells, they all died as a result of being exposed to the compound. In medical lingo this is called apoptosis (cancer cell suicide.) When ginger is present, the cells even attack one another, called autophagy

While ginger has been deemed a great natural remedy for those who are undergoing chemotherapy, it can also be used in larger quantities to treat cancer of its own accord.
Another study showing ginger’s ability to fight ovarian cancer concludes with:

“Ginger inhibits growth and modulates secretion of angiogenic factors in ovarian cancer cells. The use of dietary agents such as ginger may have potential in the treatment and prevention of ovarian cancer.”

Ginger has also been proven to treat prostate cancer. The British Journal of Nutrition published the results of an American study recently in which ginger extract (zingiber officinale) killed human prostate cancer cells while healthy prostate cells were left alone. Whole ginger extract was revealed to shrink prostate tumor size by a whopping 56%

Further adding to the benefits of ginger, the spice has no toxicity when consumed even in high doses, and does not cause people to endure the very uncomfortable side effects of chemo and radiation treatments. The American Cancer Society admits  that more than 15% of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 20,000 American women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. Many of these cases can be helped with ginger root.

While Big Pharma would have these men and women endure very invasive treatments, some simple ginger root powder can cause their cancer cells to commit a certain death.

Home #Remedies for Phlegm

Phlegm often accompanies colds and other upper respiratory infections. While not a serious health problem, if phlegm is not treated timely, it can clog and irritate the bronchial tubes and in turn cause a secondary upper respiratory infection.
The presence of phlegm is usually indicated by a constant need for throat clearingconstant cough, runny nose, difficulty breathing, feeling weak and, in some cases, fever. Phlegm tends to collect and congest in the chest and throat and is usually expelled through coughing.
Phlegm contains the bacteria, virus or inflammatory cells produced in response to an infection. In addition to infections such as the common coldflu and bronchitis, phlegm can be caused by an allergic reaction to irritants such as in asthma and hay fever, damaged vocal cords, and excessive smoking.
Dealing with phlegm can be incredibly frustrating and seemingly never ending. But there are effective, natural home remedies that work quickly and without causing side effects.
home remedies for phlegm
Here are the top 10 home remedies for phlegm.

1. Steam

Steam inhalation is the best and the simplest way to get rid of phlegm. Inhaling steam into the nasal passages helps keep phlegm in liquid form so it is easier to eliminate from your system.
  • Take a steam shower twice daily. Turn your shower to full heat and stay in the closed bathroom for 10 minutes to help break up the mucus. Be sure to moisturize your body after, as warm water robs your skin of essential oils and moisture.
  • Alternatively, pour hot boiling water in a large bowl. Hold a towel over your head and inhale the steam for five to 10 minutes. This will help loosen the secretions in your lungs. You can use this simple remedy several times a day.

2. Salt Water

Gargling with warm salt water is another easy way to treat phlegm. While warm water is soothing for an irritated throat, salt helps destroy bacteria that may be causing your infection and therefore reduces production of phlegm.
  1. Mix one-fourth teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.
  2. Gargle with the solution.
  3. Repeat this remedy several times a day.

3. Lemon Juice

Lemon is a great ingredient for loosening mucus and phlegm. Plus, lemon’s antibacterial property and high vitamin C content improves the body’s resistance to infections.
Phlegm Home Remedy
  • Add two teaspoons of lemon juice and one tablespoon of honey to a glass of hot water. Drink this at least three times a day to soothe your throat and reduce phlegm production.
  • Another simple option is to cut a slice of lemon, sprinkle a little bit of salt and pepper on it and then suck on the lemon slice. It will help force the phlegm out of your throat. Do this two or three times a day.

4. Ginger

Ginger is a natural decongestant and has been used to fight off throat and respiratory tract infections for ages. Also, the antiviral, antibacterial and expectorant properties present in ginger ease congestion in the throat and chest to help you breathe easier.
  • Add one tablespoon of fresh ginger slices to one cup of boiled water. Steep for a few minutes and then add two teaspoons of honey. Drink this soothing ginger tea several times throughout the day.
  • Alternatively, chew raw ginger slices several times a day and add ginger to your dishes.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric has strong antiseptic properties that help reduce phlegm by killing the bacteria that cause excessive mucus production. Also, turmeric helps strengthen the immune system.
phlegm-home-remedy-turmeric
  • Add one teaspoon of turmeric to a glass of hot milk. Drink it once in the morning and again before going to bed.
  • Swallow one-half teaspoon of turmeric with a glass of water two or three times a day.
  • Add one tablespoon of turmeric and a pinch of salt to a glass of hot water. Use it to gargle several times a day.

6. Chicken Soup

Warm chicken soup can also help treat phlegm. Hot chicken soup will help moisturize the airways and thin the consistency of the phlegm. It will also soothe an irritated throat and induce relaxation.
Have some chicken soup at least two or three times a day to clear phlegm from your throat. For increased benefits, add ginger and garlic to the soup. Homemade soup is often more effective than canned soup, which has preservatives.

7. Cayenne Pepper

cayenne pepper
Cayenne pepper helps the body release mucus built up in the nasal passages and throat. The warm and stimulating nature of cayenne pepper also helps reduce pain in your chest and soothes an irritated throat.
  1. Mix the following ingredients: one-fourth teaspoon each of cayenne pepper and grated fresh ginger, one tablespoon each of honey and apple cider vinegar, and two tablespoons of water.
  2. Drink this mixture two or three times a day to help reduce phlegm production.
Note: Also include cayenne pepper in cooking your dishes.

8. Honey

honey
Honey has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties that make it a great home remedy for soothing an irritated throat and eliminating phlegm. Plus, it has antiseptic properties that help boost the immune system to fight off infections faster.
  • Add a pinch of white or black pepper powder to one tablespoon of honey. Pepper will help treat a throat infection, while the honey will soothe the mucous membranes. Have this mixture twice a day for a week.
  • Add one tablespoon of honey to a glass of warm water. Drink this several times a day. You’ll get the benefits from honey’s medicinal properties and the water will help thin the mucus.

9. Onion

onions
Onion has excellent antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties that help relax your throat and get rid of phlegm. Also, onion helps boost the immune system and speed up the healing process. You can make a tonic with onion and sugar to increase the fluidity of the phlegm so it is easier to expel.
  1. Wash and finely chop a small onion.
  2. Toss the onion with two tablespoons of sugar and set it aside for half an hour. The mixture will develop a liquid texture.
  3. Take one tablespoon of this tonic every two to three hours or when needed.
You can store the extra tonic in the refrigerator for one to two days.

10. Carrots

carrot
Carrots have been found to be very effective in treating phlegm and other similar conditions. Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that boosts the immune system and builds resistance to various kinds of infections. Plus, carrots are packed with many nutrients and vitamins that help reduce cough symptoms as well as phlegm.
  1. Extract the juice from four to five fresh carrots.
  2. Add a little water to dilute the juice. Then add two to three teaspoons of honey and mix it well.
  3. Drink this juice throughout the day to clear phlegm from your throat.
Try these simple remedies the next time you are suffering from the annoying problem of phlegm. However, if you notice blood in the phlegm or you cough up phlegm that is yellow or green, consult a doctor.
