Anti-cancer diet: Five superfoods that fight cancer naturally!

New Delhi: Cancer cases are rising at an alarming rate in India, mainly due to the lack of awareness about the disease. It is believed that 70 percent of cancer cases in India are preventable. But unfortunately, fewer people still know that cancer can be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle.
It is estimated that 14.5 lakh people are living with cancer in India, with over 7 lakh new cases being registered each year and 5,56,400 deaths which are said to be related to the disease.
Cancer, if detected early, can be cured in most cases.
If you worry about getting cancer, the first thing you can do is to take steps that can help prevent it or reduce your risk, which may include changes in your diet and lifestyle.
Here are five foods that may reduce your risk of developing cancer:

Broccoli

All cruciferous veggies contain cancer-fighting properties, but broccoli has a sizable amount of sulforaphane - a compound that researchers say can help prevent cancer or slow down its progression.

Tomatoes

Tomato can claim to be the king of cancer-fighting foods. It contains a phytochemical called lycopene that not only gives it the red colour, but also helps prevent heart disease, also reduces the risk of certain cancers. Tomatoes are also a good source of vitamins A, C, and E - - all of which are enemies of cancer-friendly free radicals.

Berries

Both blueberries and strawberries contain high amounts of antioxidants that fight cancer. Besides, they are also rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and gallic acid, a powerful antifungal/antiviral agent that boosts immunity.

Turmeric

Curcumin, the active compound in the spice turmeric, has been shown to have anti-cancer effects. Turmeric consumption is also credited with an enhanced ability to fight inflammation.

Garlic

This culinary favourite has been used to treat and cure many health problems, including cancer, for ages. According to the American Cancer Society, garlic contains substances that can help cancer cells die off. It has been revealed in both animal studies and cell culture studies that garlic may reduce the growth rates of cancerous tumours.
