Synthetic vitamins vs Food based vitamins - video

Dr. Axe - Synthetic vitamins vs Food-based vitamins

Natural Vitamin D Supplements

Since most of us are vitamin D deficient, it is in our best interest to find a natural vitamin D supplement.
As I've said before, the best sources of vitamin D come directly from the sun.
But supplements are almost always necessary to get our vitamin D levels up high enough to reap the many health benefits. Why?

  • Most of us spend too little time outdoors without sunscreen
  • Most of us are in a geographic location where we can only make vitamin D during the summer months
The good news is that these supplements are becoming more readily available. But only one kind is considered natural.

There are two different types of vitamin D available in supplement form – vitamin D2 (also known as ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (also known as cholecalciferol).
Vitamin D2 is the type you'll find in most multivitamins, prescriptions, most supplements, and vitamin D fortified foods. It is a patented drug that behaves like vitamin D, but it is not natural. It has been responsible for the vast majority of toxicity reports on vitamin D and should be avoided.
Along with the increased risk of toxicity, it has been found to be less than half as effective as natural vitamin D3. It is also suspected of blocking some vitamin D health benefits.
Vitamin D3 is the naturally occurring form of vitamin D in your body and the one you should choose when supplementing.

The best kind is to buy is dry or in coconut oil. This is because most vitamin D supplements contain oils as stabilizers that are either unhealthy and/or have gone rancid.
You'll also want to make sure that your supplement provides a high enough vitamin D dosage to be effective. For most of us, that will be pills that are in 5,000 IU increments.

Wheatgrass Gets Rid Of Grey Hair!

1926668_1266418416831200_2081963772_n

Daily consumption of wheatgrass turns gray hair back to its natural color and more, for total body health. Wheatgrass is made up of an impressive array of nutrients that reinforce and rejuvenate everything from our cells and tissues to our organs and bodily systems. In addition to its 70% chlorophyll makeup, wheatgrass contains 17 essential amino acids, 90 minerals, 13 vitamins and 80 enzymes.
Cancer cells cannot develop in oxygen rich environments
Regular consumption of the young grass of a common wheat plant can recolor those grays so that you can enjoy your lush, natural color well into your senior years. And it doesn’t just stop at the gray. This young grass slows down the entire aging process by rejuvenating your cells, detoxifying your body, fighting tumors and tightening loose and sagging skin
Made up of 70% chlorophyll, wheatgrass, from the wheat plant triticum aestivum, restores the health of your kidneys and blood
Consuming fresh wheatgrass juice regularly provides many benefits including it has been shown to reverse gray hair back to its natural color.
How does this happen?
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, hair pigmentation is influenced by the quality of blood and the strength of the kidneys. If your hair has gone gray, your kidneys and blood need to be strengthened. Foods that accomplish this include wheatgrass and any food with high chlorophyll content.

What is wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass refers to the young grass of the common wheat plant, Triticum aestivum. Its leaves are juiced or dried into powder for human (or animal) consumption. It is often available in juice bars and smoothie restaurants, and is taken alone or mixed in fruit and/or vegetable drinks.
In The Wheatgrass Book by Ann Wigmore, consuming wheatgrass juice is named as a beauty treatment that slows down the aging process.
That’s because wheatgrass cleanses the blood, helps rejuvenate aging cells, and helps tighten loose and sagging skin.

Benefits of Wheatgrass
The benefits of wheatgrass, however, go way beyond beautification and anti-aging such as reversing gray hair. The high chlorophyll content of wheatgrass, as well as the amino acids, minerals, vitamins and enzymes enable wheatgrass to provide a wide range of health benefits and curative benefits, such as the following:
Fights tumors — Studies show that wheatgrass juice has a powerful ability to fight tumors without the usual toxicity of drugs.
Powerful detoxifier — protects the liver and the blood, and neutralizes toxic substances like cadmium, nicotine, strontium, mercury, and polyvinyl chloride
Contains liquid oxygen — this is vital to many body processes, and protects the body against cancer cells (cancer cells cannot exist in the presence of oxygen)
Blood builder — An important aspect of the chlorophyll in wheatgrass is its remarkable similarity to hemoglobin, the compound that carries oxygen in the blood. When the chlorophyll is absorbed in the human body, it is transformed into blood, which transports nutrients to every cell of the body.
Note: Some health practitioner’s claim that you can double your red blood cell count just by soaking in chlorophyll. Renowned nutritionist Dr. Bernard Jensen found that wheatgrass and green juices are the most superior blood builders.
In his book Health Magic Through Chlorophyll from Living Plant Life, he cites several cases where he was able to double the red blood cell count in a matter of days merely by having patients soak in a chlorophyll-water bath.
Even more rapid blood building results occur when patients consume wheatgrass juice and other chlorophyll-rich juices regularly.
Some consumers who use wheatgrass for therapeutic purposes grow wheatgrass in their homes, and extract the juice using a wheatgrass juicer. Some prefer the convenience of buying the juice at a juice bar like Jamba Juice or a health food store like Whole Foods.
The average dosage is 1 to 2 fluid ounces of fresh-squeezed juice once a day (or 3 to 4 times a day for detoxification)

11 Super Health Benefits in Just One Celery Stalk

  • Shubhra Krishan
11 Super Health Benefits in Just One Celery Stalk

Apples walk away with most health accolades, and spinach leads the healthy veggie brigade. Compared to them, celery is somewhat unsung, but once you read its incredible–and nearly endless–list of health benefits, you will quickly join its growing list of lovers.
  • Celery is a great choice if you are watching your weight. One large stalk contains only 10 calories! So, add celery to your shopping list and enjoy it in your salads, soups and stir-fries.
  • Celery reduces inflammation. If you are suffering from joint pains, lung infections, asthma, or acne, eating more celery will bring much-needed relief.
  • It helps you calm down: Celery for stress-relief? Oh yes! The minerals in celery, especially magnesium, and the essential oil in it, soothe the nervous system. If you enjoy a celery-based snack in the evening, you will sleep better.
  • It regulates the body’s alkaline balance, thus protecting you from problems such as acidity.
  • Celery aids digestion: some say celery tastes like “crunchy water,” and that is the reason it is so good for your digestive system.  The high water content of celery, combined with the insoluble fiber in it, makes it a great tool for easy passage of stool. Note: because celery has diuretic and cleansing properties, those with diarrhea should avoid eating it.
  • It contains “good” salts. Yes, celery does contain sodium, but it is not the same thing as table salt. The salt in celery is organic, natural and essential for your health.
  • It cares for your eyes. One large stalk of celery can deliver up to 10 percent of your daily need for Vitamin A, a group of nutrients that protects the eyes and prevents age-related degeneration of vision.
  • Celery reduces “bad” cholesterol: There is a component in celery called butylphthalide. It gives the vegetable its flavor and scent. Guess what: this component also reduces bad cholesterol! A Chicago University research shows that just two stalks of celery a day can reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) by up to 7 points!
  • It lowers blood pressure: An active compound called phthalides in celery has been proven to boost circulatory health. Raw, whole celery reduces high blood pressure.
  • It can amp up your sex life: and this is not just hearsay. Dr. Alan R. Hirsch, Director of the Smeel and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, says two pheromones in celery–androstenone and androstenol–boost your arousal levels. They are released when you chew on a celery stalk.
  • Celery can combat cancer: Two studies at the University of Illinois show that a powerful flavonoid in celery, called luteolin, inhibits the growth of cancer cells, especially in the pancreas. Another study suggests that the regular intake of celery could significantly delay the formation of breast cancer cells.
Useful Tips:
Choose celery with upright stalks that snap when bent. The leaves should be fresh and crisp.  When selecting celery, remember this rule of thumb:  The darker the color, the stronger the flavor.
Freshly chopped celery retains its nutrients much better than if you chop and store it even for a few hours.
Steamed celery not only retains its flavor, but also most of its nutrients–up to 99 percent of them, in fact!

Cashews Are A Natural Anti-Depressant

2 handfuls of cashews is the therapeutic equivalent of a prescription dose of Prozac. Inside you, the essential amino acid L-tryptophan is broken down into anxiety-reducing, snooze-inducing niacin. Even more important, tryptophan is also made into serotonin, one of your body’s most important neurotransmitters. Serotonin gives a feeling of well-being and mellowness, or as the Australians would say, “no worries.” This is such a profound effect that Prozac, Paxil and similar antidepressants usually either mimic serotonin or artificially keep the body’s own serotonin levels high. You can do the same thing with your food. And no one can tell us that beans, peas, cheese, nuts and wheat germ are toxic if you eat a lot of them!

Plenty of carbohydrates (starches) in your meals help tryptophan get to where it does the most good: in your brain. In order to cross the blood-brain barrier to get in, carbos are required. So cheese and crackers provides a better effect than the cheese standing alone. An egg or two on toast is better than just the egg. Beans, peas, and nuts already contain carbohydrate, so you are all set there.

Consider that five servings of beans, a few portions of peanut butter, or just one big handful of cashews provides one to two thousand milligrams of tryptophan, which will work as well as prescription antidepressants… but don’t tell the drug companies. Some skeptics think that the pharmaceutical people already know. Here are two quotes in evidence:

“Pay careful attention to what is happening with dietary supplements in the legislative arena… If these efforts are successful, there could be created a class of products to compete with approved drugs. The establishment of a separate regulatory category for supplements could undercut exclusivity rights enjoyed by the holders of approved drug applications.” (Source: FDA Deputy Commissioner for Policy David Adams, at the Drug Information Association Annual Meeting, July 12, 1993)

Here are 15 other Amazing Health Benefits Of Cashew Nuts

Who doesn’t know about cashew nuts? Caju is what we call them in India. We use them mostly in sweets and children love to eat them as they are. They are full of anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals which are required for the normal functioning of the body. They actually belong to Brazil but Portuguese brought them to India in the 16th century. The kidney shaped or bean shaped nuts have many health benefits, a few of which are presented below:

1. Prevents Cancer:

Proanthocyanidins are a class of flavonols which fight against tumor cells by stopping them to divide further. These proanthocyanidins and high copper content in cashew nuts help fight against cancerous cells and keeps you away from colon cancer. This is one of the major cashew nut benefits.

2. Healthy Heart:

Cashews contain low fat content when compared to other nuts and that too in the oleic acid form which is very healthy for heart. They are cholesterol free and the antioxidants present keeps you away from heart diseases.

3. Lowers High Blood Pressure:

Cashew nuts lower your blood pressure with the help of magnesium present in them.

4. Helps Hair:

Copper is the mineral which helps your hair get that color. So if you take cashews which are full of copper content, you can get that black hair that you always wished for.

5. Healthy Bones:

Like calcium, magnesium is also important for bone health which is the main content in cashew nuts.

6. Healthy Nerves:

Magnesium is stored on the bones surface which prevents calcium from entering the nerve cells and thus keeps the blood vessels and muscles relaxed. Insufficient amount of magnesium can lead calcium to enter the blood vessels leading them to contract. It also leads to high blood pressure, migraine headache etc.

7. Prevents Gallstones:

Daily intake of cashewnut can reduce the risk of developing gallstones up to 25%.

8. Helps in Weight Loss:

Even though cashew nuts are considered as fats, it contains good cholesterol. So contrary to popular belief, those who eat cashews at least twice a week gain less weight when compared to those who eat less.

9. Anti-oxidants:

Selenium, copper, magnesium etc. act as co-factors for many enzymes.

10. Helps Digestion:

Cashew nuts help in growth and development, nucleic acid synthesis and digestion.

11. High on Vitamins:

Cashew nuts are rich in vitamins like riboflavin, pantothenic acid, thiamin, niacin etc. These vitamins keep you safe from sideroblastic anemia, pellagra, etc.

12. Healthy Gums and Teeth:

As mentioned before, the magnesium content present in cashew nuts is very good for bones. So it gives healthy teeth as well as strong gums to hold them.

13. Pleasant sleep:

After menopause, these cashew nuts can give you relaxed and pleasant sleep during nights.

14. Free Radicals:

Cashew nuts help our body to utilize iron properly and eliminate free radicals which cause health problems.

15. Macular Degeneration:

Cashew nuts have the ability to filter Sun’s UV rays and protect us from macular degeneration.

Now that you know the health benefits of Cashew nuts, ensure that you eat a few once every week I am sure you already love them.

5 Reasons You Should Eat Goji Berries Every Day

5 Reasons You Should Eat Goji Berries Every Day
Goji berries are known as one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet.
They have been considered a healing food in traditional Chinese medicine for
over 5,000 years to help eyesight, boost immune function, and promote longevity.

We should all add more goji berries to our diet. Here are five reasons you should
 eat goji berries every day:

1. They give you vitamins A, C and the B vitamins.
Goji berries are an excellent source of B vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, and
niacin. They contain 500 times more vitamin C per weight than an orange and
generally have more beta-carotene than carrots. A ¼ cup serving of goji berries
contains 180 percent of your RDA of vitamin A and 30 percent of your RDA of
vitamin C.

2. They’re low in calories.
Goji berries are an excellent, healthy snack choice. A ¼ cup serving of dried goji
berries has 220calories. Since they’re nutrient-dense and sweet, those 220
calories go a long way.

3. They’re a complete protein.
According to Kirk Bachelder in “Dried Goji Berries,” as quoted by Livestrong,
“goji berries contain 19 amino acids, including the eight essential amino acids.
These berries therefore are a nearly complete source of protein, providing
13 percent more protein than weight.”

4. They’re anti-inflammatory.
Beta-sitosterol is an anti-inflammatory agent that is present in goji berries.
It can help lower cholesterol, protect against heart disease, and promote
sexual health. The Vegetarian Times writesthat “Beta-sitosterol has been used
to treat everything from fibromyalgia, asthma, allergies, hair loss, chronic
fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. It is a plant substance similar to
cholesterol that appears to lower cholesterol levels by limiting the amount of
cholesterol that can enter the body.”

5. They taste great in vegan dishes.
Goji berries can be cooked into vegan dinner dishes, eaten in vegan breakfast
bowls, or eaten dried as a snack. They’re great in muffins, raw desserts, salads,
and energy bars. They’re often eaten dried, but they’re also available as a powder,
juice or supplement. Try making gluten-free goji berries, goji energy bites, quinoa
salad with figs, purslane and goji and raw vegan chocolate pudding tart with
coconut cream and goji berries.

Goji berries are packed with antioxidants, B vitamins, iron, and they’re a complete
protein. Add this superfood to your diet to reap its many benefits.
