10 Things your Massage Therapist Wants you to Know.

Via Taylor OomenBeing an RMT (Registered Massage Therapist), you see all kinds of people, conditions and concerns.

From routine, to severe, to weird, to even funny. In my practice, I’ve started to see some common reoccurrences emerge. After consulting some colleagues of mine, they seem to have noticed a few patterns too. So, I’ve compiled 10 points that stick out the most.
Common concerns, incidents and what your RMTs are really thinking! Here are 10 things your RMT wants you to know:
1. That’s probably normal.
Is this normal? My ____ does this. My ______ has that. Outside of orthopaedic concerns, you would be surprised what patients ask their RMTs. Do other people have hair there? My skin has cellulite there, is that normal? As regulated health care professionals, we do our best to answer your questions within our scope of practice, and if you are really concerned, go to see your Doctor (we will probably refer you if we are concerned, too). But, more than likely, it’s normal.
2. It really doesn’t matter that you haven’t shaved.
Seriously. We truthfully don’t even notice, up until you mention it. It has no affect on our treatment, if it does, that’s what the oil and lotion is for. I mean it.
3. Do your stretches.
And your exercises, and your hydrotherapy, and your home care, and…you see where I am going here right? Although it would be fun to follow you around, give you treatment and remind you of your therapeutic exercises all day long, we can’t. Our time together is very short, minutes a day, a week, a month, or even longer.
This homework RMTs are giving you, is designed along your treatment plan to help you resolve your pain and dysfunction. Your health is in your hands the rest of those minutes, days, weeks, and months. If you want to get better, you need to do your homework.
4. Your body is beautiful, too.
RMTs treat hundreds of patients. That means seeing, and touching, their naked bodies. Guess what? They are all different. Out of all of them, not even one looks like what you see, airbrushed in the media. Male or female. A few have come close, but no cigar.
It breaks our hearts a little bit when we see those patients insecure about their bodies, because of the pressure of the media. It’s not often the media shows the stretch marks, scars, deformities, muscles, moles, dry skin or cellulite. that we so often see on…everyone. Those images aren’t what we see on a daily basis.
There is only one condition your body should be in, male or female, young or old: healthy. And that looks a little different for everyone. Your RMT is here as a vessel for health. We are not here to judge. And we want to tell you: Your body is beautiful, just how it is, as long as you are on your journey to health.
5. When you “re-make” the table, I smile inside.
Post treatment, when we come in for reassessment, check ins, clean ups, etc. And we see that all of the linens have been attempted to be put back, tidied and re-made, it warms our hearts. I mean, it’s silly really, they all go off to be sterilized and sanitized. It’s completely unnecessary, but it’s also really sweet for some funny reason.
6. Don’t call us “masseuses.”
We are Registered Massage Therapists. With years of training, education then certification, experience and legal responsibilities. The word masseuse is…ugh. Shudder-worthy. It’s associated with under-the-table, sketchy, “happy ending” type massage. And that is not what we do. RMT’s provide well thought out, research based treatment plans to assist our patients return-to or maintenance-of health. Please call us by our hard earned titles. Registered Massage Therapist, Massage Therapist, or simply, RMT.
7. Don’t be shy about your butt.
In our world, it’s a large muscle, actually it’s three. We call your bum gluteals or glutes. It’s not a booty or ass and we don’t see it as fat, tiny, jiggly or bony. We observe your bodies in a clinical sense, and if you have pain associated with your low back, legs, hips or glutes, don’t be shy. We’re here to help, let us know!
8. …But, please, don’t undrape yourself.
As RMTs we are legally required to follow draping protocols to protect you and ourselves. We only undrape the area being treated at that time, then redrape fully, before undraping any other areas. Please keep yourself covered. And no, we are not interested in seeing your bits (see number six if you need clarification of what we do).
9. Bodily functions are normal.
Most massage therapy treatments have some component of relaxation. Your parasympathetic nervous system starts to shine, meaning the rest-and-digest functions are in gear. And yes, that means stomach grumbling and growling, snoring, even passing gas are normal. It doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, that’s a good sign you are relaxed. As healthcare professionals, it doesn’t faze us. We don’t judge you, we’re here to help you.
10. We care.
Yes, we actually care if you do your home care. Yes, it really matters what you tell us and how you are feeling. And yes, even though we shouldn’t, we worry about you when you’re struggling. Your success is our success.
We hope we can make it better, that’s the goal, that’s why we do what we do. That’s also why RMTs refer you to other practitioners, because we truly think they could help and their tools could be of use to your recovery. Because your recovery is our priority and you matter to us. And most importantly, because we really care about you and your health.
Next time you see your RMT, keep these 10 points in mind.
Know that we love what we do, helping people is the best job in the world. We truly feel just as good as you do after a rockstar treatment! We are genuinely grateful when you consider trusting us with your health, and we consider it a privilege to share that time with you!

How To Revitalize Your Life With Healthy Chakras

chakras
Our chakras are the body’s seven energy centers and some believe that we can use this energy to maintain a physically healthy lifestyle.
Keeping our chakras aligned and healthy requires certain exercises, like those of the five Tibetan rites. Essential oils are also closely linked to maintaining healthy chakras.
Awareness of our seven chakras can result in lasting benefits and keep our minds open and calm, improving our physical and mental health.
To keep the chakras flowing and healthy, I’ll outline some benefiting practices to each chakra.

1. The Root Chakra

Responsible for basic creative and survival-based instincts, the root chakra requires you to listen to your intuitions above all else, including the desire to give in to needless wants.

2. The Sacral Chakra

There are many practices we can do to keep this center of our sexuality, creativity, and emotion aligned and healthy.
The key to keeping the sacral chakra strong, however, is balance. Some believe it to be the most sensitive chakra, and listening to intuition will help keep all areas, creatively, emotionally, sexually, or mentally, balanced.
The benefits of aligning our thoughts, actions, and emotions in a balanced life will enhance our creativity and enthusiasm.
3. The Navel Chakra
Sitting behind our belly button, the navel chakra suffers most when we eat unhealthy foods. Keeping a healthy diet will balance this chakra and in turn balance all the others.

4. The Heart Chakra

It’s no surprise that love is the strongest practice in keeping the heart chakra healthy.
Loving our inner self is the most important aspect of balancing this chakra. This will help us spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

5. The Throat Chakra

The throat chakra feeds our self-expression through speaking and an even deeper, spiritual expression of who we are.
To keep it balanced and healthy, we need to keep our physical throat healthy. Eating healthy foods and protecting against infections will benefit our chakra as well.

6. The Third Eye Chakra

For some, the third eye chakra helps perceive spirit, but it can also help us see a truer form of the world around us.
Meditation is a great practice to keep this chakra balanced and can also help to keep us energized through the day and feeling mentally healthy.

7. The Crown Chakra

The last chakra, the crown chakra, is the purest of all and keeping it aligned will help us express ourselves and our creativity every day.
The easiest way to keep it healthy is through an enlightening conversation with a friend. Other practices could include meditation, or even dancing as a form of spiritual attunement.
Following a healthy lifestyle can help maintain healthy chakras. Being open and willing to balance the chakras could benefit in a strong and flowing life.

Good long distance runners have better reproductive fitness

Distance runners, you sexy things.
MYLES GOUGH
Long distance running isn't just good for your physique. If you're a man, and you're fast over long distances, you might just have a healthier sex drive and better reproductive fitness, a new study suggests.
Biologists at the University of Cambridge in the UK were interested in how endurance running might have been beneficial to male hunters in early human societies, and whether this trait still held any value to reproductive success.
In a study looking at half-marathon runners, the team determined that the best performers were likely exposed to higher levels of testosterone in their mother's blood before birth. In men, this hormone exposure has previously been linked to stronger sex drives, higher sperm counts, and better cardiovascular fitness, the researchers say.
Following the 2013 Robin Hood half-marathon in Nottingham, England, the team photocopied the hands of 542 race finishers, including 439 men and 103 women. They were looking for differences in the length of the runners' index and ring fingers, something known as the 2D:4D ratio.
Previous studies have shown that people who are exposed to greater levels of testosterone in the womb have a longer ring finger - or fourth digit - compared to their index finger - the second digit.
The researchers found a positive correlation between the 2D:4D ratio and race timing, meaning the fastest runners tended to have longer ring fingers, a marker of more 'masculine' hands. This correlation doesn't necessarily imply that higher prenatal testosterone exposure leads to improved running abilities, but it's an interesting takeaway.
And while this correlation was true for both male and female athletes, the results for men were more pronounced. On average, the 10 percent of men with a lower 2D:4D ratio - that is, a longer ring finger - completed the race 24 minutes and 33 seconds faster than the 10 percent of men with the highest 2D:4D ratio.
For the female participants, the difference was just under 12 minutes.
The results, which were published in the journal PLOS ONE, suggest that the skills associated with endurance running could be the result of prenatal testosterone exposure, and might act as a reliable signal for reproductive potential.
"The observation that endurance running ability is connected to reproductive potential in men suggests that women in our hunter-gatherer past were able to observe running as a signal for a good breeding partner," said lead author and evolutionary biologist, Danny Longman, in a press release.
As the authors point out, "the hunting of mid-sized animals using hunting technologies such as spears favours a method of disadvantaging or weakening the animal before approaching for the kill."
As such, many successful hunters would have needed to rely on a technique known as persistence hunting, where they chased prey to the point of exhaustion, often during the hottest part of the day.
"This technique has been observed in the Kalahari in Africa, and the Tarahumara tribe of Northern Mexico, who have been reported chasing deer until they collapse before strangling them by hand," the researchers write.
Naturally, endurance running would have been a desirable trait, necessary to secure vital food resources. And apparently, the best runners are still being rewarded.

Buying human breast milk online poses serious health risk, say experts

Researchers call for regulation of internet sales of breast milk, boosted by demand from mothers unable to breastfeed, bodybuilders and fetishists

A growing market in online sales of often contaminated human breast milk – fuelled in part by bodybuilders and adults with a baby fetish – poses a serious risk to public health, according to experts.

Researchers from the University of London’s school of medicine and dentistry were so alarmed by their initial findings that they wrote an editorial in the British Medical Journal to warn of the dangers of buying breast milk online before their study was completed. The editorial says breast milk sold online should be screened for diseases such as hepatitis, HIV and syphilis.

Lead author Dr Sarah Steele said she feared that babies would die from unscreened milk sold online if the market was not regulated. In one of the studies she cited, more than 90% of breast milk purchased online was found to have bacterial growth. Some of the sellers interviewed included intravenous drug users.

Unregulated websites selling breast milk attract tens of thousand of users in the US, the research found. One site reported growing by 800 users each month. It also reported an emerging market in the UK on specialist sites as well as general retail sites including Gumtree and Craigslist. Premium prices of up $4 (£2.70) per fluid ounce (30ml) are offered by mothers who purport to eat only organic or vegan food, or can boast having “fat, chubby babies”, the researchers found.

The online market caters primarily for mothers who are unable to breastfeed their babies, serving as a cheaper alternative to regulated milk banks, where the milk is always pasteurised. But consumers also include cancer patients who believe breast milk has health benefits and gym enthusiasts who believe breast milk is a natural superfood. A third group of adult consumers are fetishists “who like to be fed like a baby, either from source or from a bottle”, according to Steele.

She told the Guardian: “I reserve my judgment on these things. The focus for us is that people need to be making safer feeding choices. In the adult market there are cancer patients who are desperate to try anything and a lot of people in the body-building and cross-fit communities who really don’t realise the dangers. They think it’s a natural superfood. They don’t realise that it could be contaminated with bacteria.”

Steele explained the dangers: “When sellers freeze milk and send it in the mail it thaws out. That’s when bacteria has time to grow and and become really dangerous, especially for infants.”

She added: “We started this study from a curiosity point of view initially, but the public health data is so definitive on how dangerous it is that we couldn’t wait for the end of our project because that could have taken several years to complete. It was so damning that we felt we had to approach the BMJ and say: ‘This needs to get out there now.’ We don’t want to be writing the report after there has been an infant death in Britain.”

The editorial calls for healthcare workers to be trained to offer advice about how to acquire breast milk safely. Steele said: “We observed that mothers are often in a desperate state and are nervous about talking to healthcare professional about their difficulties feeding. The big danger is that more women turn online and that threatens the health of their infants. And with the adult market growing, we want to make sure people aren’t spreading communicable diseases in new ways, just as we are getting on top of things like hepatitis, syphilis and HIV.”

Steele said the health benefits for adults of drinking breast milk were unproven. “Human breast milk doesn’t really have that many advantages for adults,” she said. “It is certainly not what you need in the context of bodybuilding and cross-fit, as a post-workout recovery drink.”

She pointed out that consuming breast milk was regularly discussed on mainstream online bodybuilding forums.

The paper concludes: “Although breast milk holds many known benefits, seeking out another’s milk rather than turning to instant formula poses risks. When breast milk is screened and treated appropriately, as the World Health Organisation states, it remains second to a mother’s own milk as best for infant feeding. At present, milk bought online is a far from ideal alternative, exposing infants and other consumers to microbiological and chemical agents. Urgent action is required to make this market safer.

Drumsticks are an integral part of the delicious sambhar and other South Indian delicacies. It has a unique taste and texture. You would be surprised to know that the drumstick tree or moringa tree is highly beneficial for the human body. Astonishingly all its parts are edible as well.
Let’s delve deep into the secrets of the moringa plant and identify the benefits.
What is the Moringa Tree?
  • The miracle tree Moringa is a multipurpose tree that is native to parts of Africa and Asia. It is also called drumstick tree by the British and Malunggay in Philippines
  • In India, it is found on the foothills of the Himalayan mountains. This plant belongs to the family Moringaceae. It derives its name from the Malayalam word, ‘Muringa’. It is a multipurpose plant and its leaves, pods, fruits, flowers, roots and bark are beneficial in one way or the other.

  • The moringa tree grows easily in a semi-arid, tropical and sub-tropical climate and is reported to be beneficial for human beings as its various parts are edible.
  • Some of the most commonly used parts are moringa leaves and seeds. Moringa seeds and roots are used to extract oil and the flowers can be cooked and eaten.
  • Apart from these, its bark, sap, seeds, oil, leaves, roots and flowers are used in making traditional medicine in many countries.

 Health Benefits Of Moringa:
The most amazing thing about Moringa is that all parts of this plant including its bark, roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, sap and pods are a storehouse of nutrients and antioxidants. Thus, this plant possesses innumerable health benefits and has the capacity of curing several diseases. For this reason, it is referred to as the ‘miracle tree’ and is widely used in traditional medicine. The various health benefits of moringa are as follows.
1. The seeds of moringa contain 40 percent edible oil known as Ben oil. This clear, sweet and odourless oil is rich in antioxidants and is similar to olive oil in terms of its nutritional profile. It has an indefinite shelf life as it does not turn rancid like other oils.
2. Moringa leaves are the most widely used parts of this plant. These leaves are edible. They contain three times more iron than spinach.
3. Moringa contains all the essential amino acids needed by the body. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins which are needed to grow, repair and maintain cells. Human body manufactures 10 to 12 amino acids. The remaining 8 amino acids are known as the essential amino acids which should be provided from everyday diet and moringa contains all of them. The list of essential amino acids and their benefits are given below.
ISOLEUCINEHelps in building protein and enzymes and creation of biochemical components within the body.
LEUCINEBuilds protein and enzymes along with isoleucine to enhance body’s energy and alertness.
LYSINEEnsures the absorption of right amount of calcium by the body and aids in collagen formation and production of antibodies, hormones and enzymes. Maintains the balance of nutrients that reduce viral growth.
METHEONINEProvides sulphur to the body and prevents hair, skin and nail problems. Lowers cholesterol levels by increasing liver’s production of lecithin. Helps in reducing liver fat and bladder irritation.
PHENYLALAINEProduction of chemicals required to transmit signals between nerve cells and brain, thus reducing hunger pains. It also improves memory.
THREONINEForms an important part of collagen, elastin and enamel proteins. Assists metabolism, prevents fat build up in the liver and boosts digestive and intestinal tracts.
TRYTOHYANSupports the immune system and alleviates insomnia. Reduction of anxiety, depression and migraine symptoms. Decreases the risk of artery and heart spasms as it reduces cholesterol levels along with lysine.
VALINEPromotes a sharp mind, coordinated muscles and calm mood
4. The Moringa leaves help in boosting energy levels in a natural manner, which is long lasting. It is also found to heal ulcers, restrict tumours, reduce arthritis pain and inflammation and control blood pressure.
5. Daily consumption of moringa as part of the diet improves the body’s natural defence mechanism. It is an immune stimulant and it is often prescribed for AIDS afflicted patients.
6. It is rich in vitamin A or beta-carotene and acts as an effective weapon against blindness.
7. It plays an important role in lactating mothers. Consumption of moringa is reported to cause a dramatic increase in breast milk.
8. As it balances the sugar levels, it can be extremely effective against diabetics.
9. Increased consumption of junk food in the present scenario can lead to high cholesterol levels. Moringa helps in balancing the cholesterol levels in the body.
10. Consumption of moringa leaves stimulates metabolism and cell structure of the body.
11. This plant also has several antibacterial properties and hence can be used as a purifier and as a natural detoxifier.
  • Moringa seeds mixed in impure water can help in absorbing all the impurities.
  • Moringa helps in the removal and excretion of toxic build up by attracting toxins from the blood.

12. No side effects of moringa leaves have been reported. Hence, it can be safely consumed by children and adults. Nowadays, it is used in porridge, pasta and bread to increase the nutrient content of meals.
13. Moringa supplements are better than most of the multivitamin and calcium supplements available in the market which uses synthetic ingredients. Moringa supplements are prepared from moringa leaves and pods which are natural sources of calcium and multivitamins. Their processing method increases the availability and absorption of nutrients by the body.
14. Moringa seeds are used in the manufacture of perfumes and aromatherapy oils. The flowers of moringa are used in making herbal tea which contains flavonoids and antioxidants.

15. Due to their anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, moringa supplements facilitate quick healing of minor injuries like bruises, cuts and burns.
16. Roots of moringa are used in traditional medicine to control disorders of the circulatory system, for stimulating appetite and to improve the functioning of the digestive tract. In addition to these, they can treat sexual dysfunctions, female reproductive tract problems and arthritis.
17. According to research, certain elements contained in moringa roots can cure ovarian cancer, kidney stones and inflammations. They improve the overall kidney function by enabling the body to flush out calcium and phosphates from kidneys more efficiently.
Hair Benefits Of Moringa:
Healthy hair improves physical appearance to a great extent. Health problems or nutritional deficiencies can damage the hair and cause problems like dandruff, split ends and breakage. Hence, proper intake of vitamins and minerals is essential for maintaining healthy hair. Certain vitamins, minerals and amino acids are involved in the formation of keratin protein.
18. Moringa Oleifera has a high content of vitamin A, thus promoting hair growth and maintenance. Optimum delivery of oxygen and nutrients from the circulatory system to the hair follicle is vital for proper hair growth. Vitamin A plays an important role in the development of healthy cells and tissues in the body and reduction of hair loss. Deficiency of vitamin A can cause thickening of scalp, dry hair and dandruff.
19. Moringa plant also contains zinc which stimulates hair growth by enhancing the immune function. Zinc and silica along with vitamin A prevent drying and clogging of the sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are responsible for production of sebum. Deficiency of zinc can lead to atrophy of the hair follicles due to the impairment of DNA and protein synthesis. Zinc also influences the conformation of nucleic acids.
20. Vitamin E in Moringa is a powerful antioxidant that stimulates blood circulation around the scalp. Proper flow of blood to the scalp helps in the absorption of more nutrients available in the hair follicles.
21. Moringa is a storehouse of all the nutrients required for healthy hair. Hair loss occurs due to the deficiency of vitamin B- especially B6, biotin, inositol and folic acid. Proper blood circulation to the scalp enables hair follicles to grow stronger and healthier. Vitamin C together with vitamin E helps in the improvement of blood circulation in the scalp. It is vital to maintain capillaries that carry blood onto the follicles.
22. Moringa contains abundant quantities of minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, selenium, copper and manganese which are essential for healthy hair.

23. Moringa oil is a natural supplement for improving the health and strength of hair and scalp. Regular massage with this oil helps in reducing split ends and dandruff. It supplies rejuvenating vitamins and minerals to the hair follicles and tissues of the scalp.
Skin Benefits Of Moringa:
Just like healthy hair, the supply of proper nutrients is vital for the maintenance of healthy skin. Moringa is loaded with nutrients like calcium, vitamin A, B, C, D, E; minerals like copper, iron, zinc, magnesium, silica and manganese. Moringa has moisturizing and nourishing properties and an excellent cleansing ability which makes it an active ingredient in skin care products.
24. Moringa has been found to possess anti-ageing properties. The effect of free radicals on human skin causes the appearance of wrinkles and makes the skin aged and less resistant to lines. Moringa has an excellent cleansing ability which aids in cleaning the skin cells of free radicals and restoring the vitality and youthful complexion of the skin.
25. Moringa leaves contain about 30 antioxidants that contribute greatly towards healthy skin. Moringa oil is highly absorbable and hence helps in delivering these powerful antioxidants to the skin cells.
26. Moringa leaves also contain sulphur. This mineral is present in every single cell of the body and is the key ingredient for Collagen and keratin. Collagen is an elastic substance that gives flexibility and softness to the skin and keratin is a rigid substance which gives the skin rigidity and strength. These two substances form the majority of skin tissue and are made up of proteins constructed from sulphur.
27. The seed extract of moringa herb is popular in the cosmetic industry due to its therapeutic skincare benefits and skin purifying properties. It possesses the ability to filter out impurities that are deeply rooted within the skin and has an amazing detoxifying and rejuvenating properties. It enhances the fairness of skin by balancing the natural skin colour and tone. A paste made from moringa leaves beautifies the skin and can be used as a face mask.
28. The ben oil which is extracted from moringa seeds is used to soften and soothe baby’s’ skin.
29. Moringa seed extract is used in protective creams and has the ability to provide protection against cigarette smoke and heavy metal pollution.
30. It is a powerful cleaning agent and moringa seed powder is used as an active ingredient in deep cleansing creams and lotions. It protects the skin from adhering pollution and smog.
Nutritional Value Of Moringa:
The most amazing fact about Moringa is that it is a storehouse of nutrients and medicinal chemicals. The various parts of this plant are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, iron and protein. It contains a plethora of phytonutrients, eight essential amino acids and other powerful disease-fighting antioxidants. According to the Ayurveda, moringa comprises of around 539 compounds capable of preventing 300 diseases. Moringa contains more than 90 nutrients and 46 different antioxidants which make it a powerhouse of nutrition. The table given below provides a list of the nutritional value of this wonderful plant.
