Superfood supplements

Spirulina and chlorella are freshwater microalgae that pack a mean punch when it comes to health benefits, two of many lesser known superfoods. 
Three grams of spirulina alone have shown to contain 60 percent of one’s daily needed protein, 280 percent more antioxidants than consuming blueberries, 3900 percent more iron than spinach, and 2800 percent more beta-carotene than carrots.
Chlorella is a good alternative to spirulina if you’re seeking a higher amount of nucleic acids, as it has twice the amount. These nucleic acids are important contributors for our DNA and RNA production.
Another added bonus of this algae is that it reproduces eight times a day which makes it highly sustainable and reliable source of nutrition.
Additionally, both chlorella and spirulina have been praised by nutritionists and health food gurus alike for their amazing properties such as their ability to detoxify heavy metals and their ability to support the immune system and fight cancer. They also decrease appetite and lower blood sugar and cholesterol through the pigment phycocyanin which “reverses endothelial dysfunction in metabolic syndrome.”
In fact, spirulina has been used by the World Health Organization as a supplement for malnourished children due to its ability to counteract vitamin A deficiencies with one gram. The supplement has also been given to patients who suffered from chronic arsenic poisoning – a study showing a 47 percent decrease in arsenic in participants’ bodies when 250 milligrams of the extract were taken in combination of two milligrams of zinc twice a day.
The important thing to keep in mind when choosing the correct chlorella supplement is to purchase ones with a “cracked cell wall.” Research has proven that these are far more beneficial to the user because they are more easily absorbed.
You can enjoy your chlorella and spirulina in two different ways. You can either purchase them in tablet form, or as a powder to mix with water. Regardless of whichever method you decide, they are equally effective in their nutritional value.
The next, lesser known health food staple is aloe vera. Aloe vera has been on the rise in popularity and can be found in various superfood smoothies. This is because it has been shown to have alkalizing properties – that is, it helps your body restore its pH balance. 
On top of this, aloe vera has earned its place among the healthiest foods due to its anti-inflammatory properties, its detoxifying effect, and its ability to improve blood glucose levels and assist in hydration and digestion.
Another superfood that must be mentioned is 5-HTP. This is a natural amino acid and chemical precursor in the synthesis of serotonin. When consumed, it increases the production of serotonin, therefore helping with multiple conditions associated with decreased levels of the chemical. The most amazing effect of the amino acid is probably in its ability to elevate one’s mood.
Because 5-HTP is found naturally in our bodies and assists in the natural production of serotonin, it is a far superior supplement if you’re looking to decrease anxiety or increase your mood. There are also some studies that have found that 5-HTP is also a good sleep aid. As a result of its ability to provide the user with improved mood and sleep, along with mild appetite suppressant qualities, it can help with weight loss.
Last but not least is the highly debated noni juice. The fruit has recently gained notoriety in the press through supermodels like Miranda Kerr who swears by its beauty enhancing qualities. 
Noni juice is harvested from the fruit of the Morinda citrifolia tree, which can be found in French Polynesia and Tahiti. Along with being incredibly healthy, the juice reduces inflammation which lends to a smooth, glowing appearance to one’s complexion.
Packed with probiotic, anti-inflammatory properties, as well as potassium and antioxidants, it’s no surprise that supermodels swear by it.
A warning for the faint of heart, however, the fermented juice boasts a pungent smell and taste, often being described as “medicinal” in nature. 
Perhaps, however, this is fitting. Considering that all the supplements listed here promise to improve our overall health from the inside out, perhaps they should all be stocked in our medicine cabinets.
