Why Breathing Deeply Helps You Calm Down!

Why Breathing Deeply Helps You Calm Down

Deep breaths can settle your nerves, and now scientists have discovered the neural pathway in the brain that controls this process.
In an experiment on mice, scientists identified a circuit of neurons — a tiny cluster of a mere 350 nerve cells, among millions in the mouse brain — that regulate the connection between breathing and the higher-order brain activity that affects how calmly or worked up the mice behaved.
When the scientists removed these cells, they found that the mice still breathed normally, but they were uncharacteristically calm. This discovery, the researchers said, may someday lead to therapies to help people who have anxiety, stress and panic attacks.

A paper describing the work was published March 3 in the journal Science.
Breathing is largely an unconscious, involuntary action that's among the most basic rhythms of life. It is the process in which most animals inhale oxygen to create energy at a cellular level and then exhale carbon dioxide, the byproduct of this cellular respiration.
Yet humans have known for millennia that taking long, slow, deep breaths can have a calming effect and reduce stress. Conversely, panic attacks can cause a person to take short, fast breaths, further exacerbating the sense of unease.
Researchers have known that neural circuits throughout the brain regulate breathing, but until now, they had not pinpointed the neural pathway that connects breathing to the emotional states of anxiety and calmness.
In the new work, a team led by Dr. Mark Krasnow, a biochemistry professor at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California, searched the main region of the brain that controls breathing rhythms — called the pre-Bötzinger complex — which is nestled in a rudimentary section of the brain stem called the pons. In an experiment that was the culmination of years of work involving techniques such as neural mapping and genetically engineered mice, Krasnow's team zeroed in on the responsible circuitry.
The team found a subset of neurons in the pre-Bötzinger complex that transmits signals to a region in the pons that moderates feelings of alertness, attention and stress.
They also found that these neurons express two proteins, cadherin-9 (CDH9) and developing brain homeobox protein 1 (DBX1), which are controlled by the Cdh9 and Dbx1 genes, respectively.
The researchers then turned to genetically engineered mice, in which they could mute the Cdh9 and Dbx1 genes. This enabled the researchers to select and kill the approximately 350 neurons that are thought to connect breathing to arousal, yet leave all the other neurons untouched, according to the study's lead author, Dr. Kevin Yackle, an assistant researcher at the UCSF School of Medicine. Afterward, the researchers found that the mice spent more time in a calm state.
Although deep breathing is an easy and safe way to control anxiety and stress, Yackle sees potential for developing medicines that target these genes.
"In panic disorders, it may be nearly impossible for one to control breathing," Yackle told Live Science. "Therefore, a pharmacological approach may be critical for preventing these panic attacks triggered by hyperventilation."
Yackle also said that sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) may result when the brain doesn't sense a lack of oxygen while the infant is sleeping, and thus doesn't arouse the body. Some babies may be at higher risk for SIDS for reasons of genetics or because they were born prematurely. In these cases, babies at the highest risk for SIDS might benefit from a therapy that improves the neural signaling between oxygen intake and arousal, Yackle said.

Curried Carrot Cashew Salad!

There are flavor combinations I have a hard time not repeating all the time. This salad is fairly indicative of one of my favorites: carrots and curry. I’ve made curried carrot soup, a split pea curried carrot soup, and I’ve been tinkering with a carrot curry for an eBook I’ve been working on. The earthy, slightly sweet flavor of the carrots is a lovely compliment to the spice from the curry.

A flavorful vegetable-based salad using carrots roasted with coconut oil and curry powdered then tossed with fresh herbs, lemon juice, and toasted cashews.
SERVINGS2 servings
CALORIES460 kcal
INGREDIENTS
Roasted Carrots
  • 1 pound carrots
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil melted
  • 1 tablespoon mild curry powder
Toasted Cashews
  • Salt as needed
  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil
  • ½ cup raw cashews
Salad
  • ¼ cup unsweetened coconut
  • 1/4 cup loosely packed parsley chopped
  • 1/4 cup loosely packed cilantro chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh lemon juice to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Preheat oven to 400˚F. Cut carrots on the bias in ¼” slices. In a roasting pan, toss with the melted coconut oil and the curry powder. If your curry powder doesn’t have salt in the mix, add a pinch to the pan. Toss until the carrots are coated with the coconut oil and curry powder. Roast until the carrots are tender, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool slightly.
  2. Heat a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add the coconut oil followed by the cashews. Toast, stirring frequently until the cashews are browning, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove and set aside. Wipe out the skillet and add the coconut flakes. Toast the coconut until golden.
  3. When the carrots are done, place in a bowl along with the toasted cashews, coconut flakes, parsley, and cilantro. Add a pinch of salt as needed and squeeze a half of lemon or so over the carrot salad. Toss until everything is well combined and serve.
RECIPE NOTES
Tips & Tricks: Make your own curry powder blend or find one from a quality source. I like finding a spice shop and trying different blends.
I don't peel carrots. Instead, I give them a good scrub and that is usually just what they need.

Stock up: get the pantry ingredients you will need: CashewsCarrotsCoconut Oil

CASHEW SALAD

variations

ADD GREENS: Make this a bit more of a traditional salad by adding lettuce, spinach, or shredded kale. You can also whip up a lemon vinaigrette for dressing.
ADD GRAINS: If I’m making a real salad out of these curried carrots, I also like to add a handful of cooked grains like quinoa or millet.
SWAP PRODUCE: Sweet potatoes or cubed butternut squash work well in place of the carrots.

Microwaves Are Bad For You But This Is What You Didn’t Know!

The Southwest Museum of Engineering, Communication, and Computation (SMECC) reported that over 95 percent of American homes possess a microwave oven, and it is regarded to be a necessary item in every household.
These ovens were originally sold as “Radaranges,” and they work as a result of electromagnetic waves which pass through food, causing the molecules to move and thus heat up.  These waves are electromagnetic energy and travel at the speed of light.
The microwave ovens have a magnetron which produces energy, and it converts the polarity of the molecules to negative. The polarity changes millions of times in a second in the microwave oven.
Therefore, these waves affect the molecules of the food, forcing polarized molecules to radiate at the same frequency, that is, millions of times every second. Due to this, the food heats up, but it is also accompanied by another result, known as ‘structural isomerism’, which is a structural damage of the food molecules.
Dr. Joseph M. Mercola,  a famous alternative medicine proponent, osteopathic physician, and web entrepreneur, maintains:
“They bounce around the inside of your [microwave] oven and are absorbed by the food you put in it.”
Namely, there is a rapid rotation of the water molecules in the microwave and the high frequencies create molecular friction and heat up the food. However, the result is a change of the molecular structure in your food and a reduction of the nutrients in it.
Dr. Hans Hertel, a Swiss biologist, and food scientist conducted a study to examine the effects of microwaved food. Participants lived in a controlled environment and intermittently ate raw foods, conventionally cooked foods, and microwaved foods for 8 weeks.
After meals, researchers tested the blood samples of participants, and tests showed that the blood chemistry has been drastically changed due to the microwaved food.
Hans Hertel states:
“There are no atoms, molecules or cells of any organic system able to withstand such a violent, destructive power for any extended period of time, not even in the low energy range of milliwatts…
This is how microwave cooking heat is generated – friction from this violence in water molecules. Structures of molecules are torn apart, molecules are forcefully deformed (called structural isomerism) and thus become impaired in quality.”
Microwaves work with all water molecules they can come across, and due to this, the food is often unevenly heated, as some foods contain higher water amounts.
Researchers at Stanford University examined the effects of microwaves on breast milk. According to one of the head scientist,
“Microwaving human milk, even at a low setting, can destroy some of its important disease-fighting capabilities.”
They state that microwaving causes numerous alter changes in the milk besides heating.
In 1991, the Oklahoma hospital was sued after the death of a patient after receiving blood that was heated in a microwave oven.
As a result of the negative effects of microwave ovens on the health, they have been banned in Russia since 1976.
These are the detrimental effects of these ovens:
  • People do not benefit from the food, as microwave ovens deprive it of all or most of the minerals, vitamins, and nutrients.
  • The consumption of foods heated in a microwave oven might lead to a permanent brain damage by “shorting out” electrical impulses in the brain.
  • Microwaves convert the amino acids in milk and cereal grains into carcinogens.
  • Thawing frozen fruits convert the glucoside and galactoside, containing fractions into carcinogenic ingredients.
  • Regular consumption of microwaved food leads to immune system deficiencies due to changes in the lymph gland and serum.
  • These foods might also increase the number of cancerous cells in human blood.
  • Microwaved foods might be responsible for the rapidly raised colon cancer rate, as they lead to stomach and intestinal cancerous growths (tumors).
  • Even extremely short exposure of raw, cooked or frozen vegetables to microwaves turns their plant alkaloids into carcinogens.
  • Microwaved food causes a reduction of intelligence, poor concentration, loss of memory, and emotional instability.
Raum & Zelt published the Comparative Study of Food Prepared Conventionally and in the Microwave Oven in 1992, in which it is noted that:
“Production of unnatural molecules is inevitable. Naturally occurring amino acids have been observed to undergo isomeric changes (changes in shape morphing) as well as transformation into toxic forms, under the impact of microwaves produced in ovens.
One short-term study found significant and disturbing changes in the blood of individuals consuming microwaved milk and vegetables. Eight volunteers ate various combinations of the same foods cooked different ways.
All foods that were processed through the microwave ovens caused changes in the blood of the volunteers. Hemoglobin levels decreased and overall white cell levels and cholesterol levels increased.
Lymphocytes decreased. Luminescent (light-emitting) bacteria were employed to detect energetic changes in the blood. Significant increases were found in the luminescence of these bacteria when exposed to blood serum obtained after the consumption of microwaved food.”
What all scientists warn about and multiple studies point out is that microwaves are extremely dangerous, and lead to various diseases, including cancer.
They destroy the nutrients in food and weaken our immune systems. Therefore, make sure you stop using them as soon as possible!

How to Remove Pounds of Toxic Waste from Your Colon – Recipe!

The proper function of the colon is of high importance for your overall health, as it is a vital part of the digestive system, so you should take care of its health.
According to Dona Gates, the founder of Body Ecology, maintaining a healthy colon and digestive system strengthens the overall health and ensures the well-being.
Namely, the main organ responsible for the elimination of toxins, the liver, as well as all tissues and cells in the body, depend on a healthy colon.
It receives all the waste from the liver, blood, lymph system, throat, lungs, and sinuses, as well as the undigested fecal matter, and eliminates them from the body.
Moreover, all the leftover nutrients from the consumed foods, like vitamins, water, and electrolytes, go to the colon and can be brought back so the body can use them.
All these important processes will not take place if the function of the colon is impeded, and as the toxins and waste build up, they lead to numerous health issues.
Medical experts claim that the food digestion lasts from 24 to 44 hours, so the food needs this time to pass the bowels and colon, and leave your body in the form of waste.
Therefore, the body needs 70 hours to process processed foods which lack nutrients and thus accumulates over 20 pounds of waste in the colon. In these cases, a person suffers from constipation and irregular and painful bowel movements.
In the case of colon toxicity, one often experiences the following symptoms:
  • Diarrhea, stomachache, gas, bloating, indigestion, constipation
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Vaginal infections, poor immunity, skin rashes, bladder problems
  • Anxiety, poor memory, depression, fatigue, mood swings, brain fog

Beating Cancer: How Cutting Sugar Reversed One Man's Death Sentence!

Scientists believe two-thirds of all cancers are caused by bad choices such as smoking, tanning beds, not exercising and the granddaddy of them all: a poor diet.
When it comes to diet, one of the worst types is one high in sugar. In fact, scientists are increasingly discovering a dramatic link between sugar and cancer.
A clear relationship between sugar and cancer leads scientists to two conclusions: sugar use contributes to cancer, and going without it can slow the growth of the disease.

One hundred years ago, the average person consumed just four pounds of sugar a year. Now, most of us take in 40 times this amount -- 160 pounds a year.Food manufacturers add enormous amounts of sugar, often in the form of high fructose corn syrup, to products we consume all day, every day, such as coffee drinks and cereal, soda and snacks -- even foods you wouldn't expect, like spaghetti sauce and peanut butter. For instance, a tiny container of fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt has more sugar than a candy bar.
The Cancer-Sugar Link
Now scientists tell us sugar directly influences cancer cells. The amount we consume can either feed those cells or starve them.
In a study conducted at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, researchers fed mice diets high in sugar and observed they had a higher incidence in breast and lung cancer.
"We determined that it was specifically fructose, in table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, ubiquitous within our food system, which was responsible for facilitating lung metastasis and 12-HETE production in breast tumors," co-author Dr. Lorenzo Cohen, professor of Palliative, Rehabilitation, and Integrative Medicine, said.
"We found that sucrose intake in mice comparable to levels of Western diets led to increased tumor growth and metastasis, when compared to a non-sugar starch diet," Dr. Peiying Yang, assistant professor of Palliative, Rehabilitation, and Integrative Medicine, said.
The study suggests a diet high in sugar can contribute to the formation of cancer. It also suggests that diet can make a difference in the treatment of a person who has already been diagnosed with cancer.
A Death Sentence
Fred Hatfield knows that first hand.
"It just absolutely amazes me that medical science is just now finding this out," he said.
In 2012 he received what amounted to a death sentence.
"The doctors gave me three months to live because of widespread metastatic cancer in my skeletal structure," Hatfield said. "Three months. Three different doctors told me that same thing."
His wife Gloria recalls getting the news.
"It's a horrible, horrible feeling to have someone tell you that the person you love only has three months to live and you're not going to be with him anymore," she said.
The Ketogenetic Diet
Then Hatfield heard about a low-sugar diet, called the ketogenic diet, believed to slow cancer in some people. With nothing to lose, he gave it a try, and to his astonishment, it worked.
"And the cancer was gone," he said. "Completely."
Hatfield's recovery didn't surprise Dr. Dominic D'Agostino. His team at the University of South Florida discovered mice with highly aggressive metastatic cancer continue living when fed a ketogenic diet.
"We have dramatically increased survival with metabolic therapy," he told CBN News. "So we think it's important to get this information out."
And it's not just lab animals. D'Agostino has seen similar results in humans.
"I've been in correspondence with a number of people and all of them are still alive, despite the odds," he said. "So this is very encouraging."
The ketogenic diet means no sugar and no starchy carbohydrates like bread and pasta, which convert to sugar. D'Agostino says cancer cells love sugar and starch because cancer thrives on the glucose from those foods.
Conversely, removing the glucose results in starvation for the cancer cells. Glucose also fuels our healthy cells, but if it's not there, those cells can switch to an alternate fuel source called ketone bodies.
Cancer cells only run on glucose. D'Agostino says the deficiency in cancer cells can be used to defeat them.
"Your normal cells have the metabolic flexibility to adapt from using glucose to using ketone bodies," he explained. "But cancer cells lack this metabolic flexibility. So we can exploit that."
Clean Eating
Since processed food contains so much sugar and starch, people following the ketogenic diet tend to cook whole foods at home from scratch.
Gloria said switching to the ketogenic diet was easy.
"You can go online and there's cookbooks. It's clean eating, just very clean eating. None of the sugars, salts, the trash food, " she said.
When it comes to cancer, sugar is considered public enemy number one. Avoiding it could lead to prevention or slowing it down in people fighting the disease.
